‎Edition originale, un des cent neuf exemplaires réimposés au format in-quarto tellière, sur vergé pur fil Lafuma-Navarre au filigrane NRF (N°XLII). De son vrai nom Boris Andreïevitch Vogau, Boris Pilniak (1894-1937) commence sa carrière littéraire en 1915 dans des revues ; il est ensuite ballotté, comme des millions de russes, par les évènements qui accompagnent la révolution bolchévique : la guerre civile et la famine, qui vont influencer son oeuvre. A partir de 1918, il publie deux recueils de nouvelles qui vont attirer l’attention notamment celle de Maxime Gorki. En 1921, il publie son oeuvre majeure, L’Année nue, qui retrace la première année de la Révolution dans un style très personnel, très novateur, à tel point qu’il est difficile à traduire. Après de nombreux voyages et la publication d’oeuvres intéressantes, il finira par être arrêté le 28 octobre 1937 et fusillé le 21 avril 1938, victimes des fameux “procès de Moscou”. Bel exemplaire, bien frais.‎

His journey from the Willebroek Canal canoed by Robert Louis Stevenson through the Charleroi coalfields winds through the Sambre into France and eventually by way of the Oise and Aisne reaches the Moselle on the edge of Nancy. Through a countryside of surprising interest this fine stream flows past Metz and through Lorraine and on to Luxembourg. ‎Belle planche dessinée d'après nature par Édouard Pingret, lithographiée par Alophe, et finement coloriée à la main et gommée. Elle est issue de la Galerie royale de costumes, à propos de laquelle son éditeur Aubert et Cie déclarait : "Cette belle et nombreuse collection n'a pas de rivale ; elle est toute executee sur des originaux peints d'apres nature et rapportes par des artistes de talent [...] Le succes obtenu par celle galerie, la plus belle, la plus riche et la plus consciencieusement exacte qui ait encore ete faite, nous a determines a poursuivre la collection" (Catalogue Aubert et et Cie, 1849). Issu d'une famille fortunée, Édouard Pingret étudia la peinture avec Jean-Louis David et Jean-Baptiste Régnault. Il fit ses armes de portraitiste avec un portrait de Napoléon Ier en 1808, et montra régulièrement des œuvres au Salon de Paris à partir de 1810. En 1833, il se rendit dans les Pyrénées, où il réalisa une important série lithographiée représentant des personnages et costumes des Pyrénées françaises, notamment des régions de Pau, Laruns, Bagnères-de-Luchon, Bagnères-de-Bigorre ou encore Barrèges.
