Incisa da Giacomo Franco, la carta è disegnata da Bernardino Valle. Questo esemplare è tratto dalla Geografia di Claudio Tolomeo Alessandrino, edita da Rosaccio nel 1598. Presenta un testo descrittivo al verso.Giacomo Franco, figlio naturale del pittore e incisore Battista Franco e da tale Francesca da Urbino, nacque a Venezia, o più probabilmente a Urbino, nel 1550. Esercitò, operando sempre a Venezia, il mestiere di incisore, calcografo, editore benché nel suo testamento, rogato il 16 giugno 1620 dal notaio Fausto Doglioni, egli si definisca "desegnador". Il suo nome non ricorre mai negli atti dell'arte dei "libreri, stampatori e ligadori", mentre si trova negli elenchi della corporazione dei pittori, alle date 1606 e 1619, termini che indicano probabilmente l'anno di iscrizione all'arte, e quello di cessazione dell'attività. La sua attività di illustratore fu vastissima, ma la sua fama è legata sopratutto a due opere sul costume veneziano. Carta per la prima volta pubblicata nel celebre “Viiaggio da Venezia a Costantinopoli" del Rosaccio, illustrate dalle tavole di Giacomo Franco. Nel 1597 viene stampata la "Descrittione Geografica delle Isole, città e fortezze principali che si trovano in mare nel viaggio da Venetia à Costantinopoli; con molte altre a questo vicine, di nuovo aggiunte. Racolte con molta acuratezza da Giacomo Franco". L’opera reca in calce l’imprint Venetia, Presso il Franco 1597. Nel 1597 chiede e ottiene un privilegio per il volume del medico e geografo di Pordenone GiuseppeRosaccio (1530-1620 circa), “Il viaggio da Venezia a Costantinopoli”, che viene alla luce con il titolo Viaggio da Venetia a Costantinopoli per mare, e per terra, & insieme quello di Terra Santa. Da Gioseppo Rosaccio con brevita descritto. Nel quale, oltre à Settantadui disegni, di geografia, e corografia si discorre, quanto in esso viaggio, si ritrova. Cioe. Citta, Castelli, Porti, Golfi, Isole, Monti, Fiumi, e Mari. Opera utile, à Mercanti Marinai et à Studiosi di Geografia.Nel testo del Viaggio… le nozioni di natura prettamente storica e geografica sono utilizzate da Rosaccio per la costruzione e per il completamento di un itinerario di viaggio che sia “utile” - come è specificato nel sottotitolo - non solo agli studiosi di geografia, ma in primo luogo a mercanti e marinai.Il Viaggio… rientra in una sotto-tipologia di testi che diffondevano e illustravano – grazie alle ricche e dettagliate descrizioni, che accompagnano immagini e carte di viaggio relative a isole, porti e terreferme - le mutate concezioni geografiche seguite alle numerose e importanti scoperte compiute tra la fine del Quattrocento e l’inizio del Cinquecento. L’opera del Rosaccio, infatti, presenta una raccolta di 76 carte con incisioni che rappresentano graficamente le tappe dell’itinerario descritto dall’autore, raffigurando le principali città, tratti di costa, golfi, ma anche vedute, castelli, fortezze. Si potrebbe senz’altrodefinire il corpus delle incisioni come la parte più importante dell’opera: il testo, infatti, nelle parole dello stesso autore, non rappresenta altro che una vera e propria didascalia destinata ad accompagnare e commentare ogni immagine. Nelle didascalie, però, si ‘infiltrano’ ulteriori dati, di carattere prevalentemente storico ed etnografico, in grado di restituire un quadro più completo e articolato dei luoghi e delle popolazioni incontrate lungo il tragitto che da Venezia portava i naviganti a Costantinopoli. L’opera di Rosaccio, dunque, coniuga l’illustrazione cartografica dell’itinerario con la tradizione popolare dei pellegrinaggi in Terra Santa. Le due tradizioni, quella degli isolari e quella dei pellegrinaggi in Terra Santa, si fondono in un’opera odeporica che vuole essere in primo luogo utile e che trova, perciò, il suo tratto distintivo proprio nella “brevità” con cui lo scrittore “promette” al lettore di trattare gli argomenti. Il vero fruitore dell’opera è dunque ogni viaggiatore, che si trovi a dover percorrere, per qualunque motivo, l’itinerario da Venezia a Costantinopoli - così come era accaduto a Marco Veniero, ambasciatore veneto a Costantinopoli, a cui l’editore Giacomo Franco dedica il Viaggio… - “in modo che egli si possa non solo leggendo imparare, ma quasi vedere in fatto con gli occhi propri” le isole e le coste, che si incontrano lungo l’itinerario (cfr. Carriero, Giuseppe Rosaccio.Viaggio da Venetia a Costantinopoli Per Mare, e Per Terra, Da Gioseppo Rosaccio con brevità descritto, 2009).L’opera conosce numerose edizioni; alla Marciana [245.d.253] e conservata la raccolta di tavole stampata da Giacomo Franco nel 1597, mentre l’edizione del Viaggio… – con il testo di Rosaccio e la dedica a Marco Venier – viene alla luce nel 1598, e conosce una ristampa nel 1608. The work was a kind of encyclopedia containing news about the various localities of the world arranged in alphabetical order, enriched with maps and views of the whole world belonging to famous cartographic collections of the past-Bertelli, Valegio, Camocio, Bonifacio, Nelli, Magini, and others-of which the publisher Cadorin probably possessed the original plates. Rare map included for the first time in Descrittione Geografica Delle Isole, Città, & Fortezze principali, che si trovano in mare nel viaggio da Venetia a Costantinopoli, con molte altre a queste vicine, di nuovo aggiunte printed in Venice in 1597 by Giacomo Franco .Giacomo Franco, the natural son of the painter and printmaker Battista Franco and that Francesca da Urbino, was born in Venice, or perhaps more likely in Urbino in 1550. Exercised, in Venice, the profession of an engraver, copperplate engraver and publisher, although in his will, drawn June 16, 1620 by the notary Fausto Doglioni, he defines "desegnador". His name never occurs in the acts of art ""libreri, stampatori e ligadori", while it is in the lists of the painters' guild, the dates 1606 and 1619, terms that probably indicate the year of enrollment to the art, and to cessation. His work as an illustrator was very wide, but his fame is mainly due to two works on the Venetian costume.
