TROLLOPE, Anthony.
Framley Parsonage.
8vo. "Framley Parsonage" comprises 373 pages and 6 copper engravings. This is the first 3 volumes of the Cornhill Magazine, complete, and containing the above described novel, and several other accounts. Publisher's original red cloth boards, titled in gilt to front and spine, covered in pictorial blindstamping, tissue guards to protect engravings. Some wear and age-toning to boards, delicate hinge in the second volume, otherwise in very good, original condition. The First Appearance of Framley Parsonage, a Victorian novel by the esteemed and brilliant nineteenth century story writer Anthony Trollope, this is the complete work, as it first appeared, in serial form with illustrations, published 1860-1861 in the first three volumes of Cornhill Magazine. Framley Parsonage is the fourth novel in Anthony Trollope's series known as the Chronicles of Barsetshire. It was first published in serial form in the Cornhill Magazine, in the opening numbers of the magazine, volume I published January 1860 containing chapters 1 to 18, volume II published in June 1860 contains chapters 19 to 36, and volume III published in January 1861 containing chapters 37 to 48. The novel was subsequently published in book form by Smith, Elder & Co. of London in 1861. The same year, a German edition was published by Bernhard Tauchnitz in Leipzig. The story revolves around a young vicar Mark Robarts, settled in the village of Framley in Barsetshire with his wife and children, and his ambitions to further his career which lead him to a foolhardy financial agreement with a notorious debtor. A secondary plot deals with the romance and marriage of Mark's sister Lucy and Ludovic, also known as Lord Lufton, a friend and benefactor to Mark. In his autobiography, Trollope described Framley Parsonage: "The story was thoroughly English. There was a little fox-hunting and a little tuft-hunting, some Christian virtue and some Christian cant. There was no heroism and no villainy. There was much Church, but more love-making." Also of literary interest, in the volume I is the first appearance of Thackeray's novel "Lovel, the Widower" which evidently, he had written after his first visit to America, late in his career, not long before retiring, and in fact not long before his death. William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) was a founding editor of the literary journal The Cornhill Magazine in 1859, but resigned due to ill-health in 1862, though his last works were published in the journal. He died in 1863. The first edition in book form appeared in 1861, published in London, by Smith, Elder and Co.

True Crime James PD. and TA. Critchley P. D. T. A.
THE MAUL AND THE PEAR TREE
N.Y.: Mysterious Press 1986 1986. 1st American edition March 1986 so stated with complete number line beginning with 1. Fine in dust jacket not price clipped in an acid-free archival acetate cover. The Ratcliffe Highway Murders 1811 that shocked Regency London. "In 1811 London's East End was the scene of a series of murders so brutal and irrational that they caused panic throughout the city which lacked a central police force. This engrossing account marking the American nonfiction debut of British mystery novelist James details the seven vicious "brains battered out and throats butchered" apparently motiveless slayings which occurred first in a linen shop then days later in a nearby pub; the confused efforts of local "police" groups; and the cases' suspiciously abrupt closing after suspect John Williams a seaman and lodger at the Pear Tree public house committed suicide in jail thereby sealing his "guilt" and prompting a bizarre parade of his corpse together with a murderous maul throughout the city. James and police historian Critchley use documents and contemporary news accounts splendidly pointing up the incompetence of the investigators and offering an intriguing view of what really happened." -- Publishers Weekly. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. Book. Mysterious Press 1986 Hardcover
