A very few leaves show short closed tears along fore-edge. Each number is generally 4 pp. portrait plate many/most inter-leaved with an additional unnumbered text leaf Realidades e phantasias. Cloth split and neatly mended along upper front joint approx. 1/2" surface loss at heel of spine panel corners rubbed with minor exposure. Mended front hinge rear hinge slightly starting but binding firm. 580 pp. all 6 engraved plates present though most bound in other than where plate list indicates them to be. Originally the copy of Dr. J. Chalmers DaCosta of Jefferson Medical College Philadelphia with his book plate mounted inside front cover and the signature of George DaCosta inked on front blank following flyleaf. T. B. Questa ricerca etnografica, scritta con lo stile narrativo e intimo di un diario di viaggio, parte dall'osservazione quotidiana della relazione di cura tra una "badante venuta dall'Est" e i suoi "nonni italiani", per poi seguirne il ritorno nel paese d'origine, la Moldavia, piccola repubblica ex sovietica ai confini dell'Unione Europea. Qui, come in Romania o in Ucraina, il mercato del lavoro e gli stessi rapporti familiari negli ultimi vent'anni sono stati ristrutturati insieme alle case di chi lavora all'estero. La catena globale della cura coinvolge mariti, figli, parenti, vicini di casa e amici in complesse dinamiche relazionali che mettono in discussione gli equilibri dei contesti rurali in cui vivono le famiglie delle donne che lavorano in Italia. Esplorare tali mutamenti ci permette di comprendere la rilevanza di un processo che ha cambiato non solo la vita di tante famiglie italiane, ma anche le società dell'Europa orientale post-socialista. Il volume viene proposto, a dieci anni dalla prima edizione, arricchito di una nuova postfazione dedicata ai "figli delle badanti" e al ruolo che i migranti moldavi giocano nel contesto del confronto geopolitico tra Europa e Russia.
