Modestly rubbed edges and extremities mild exposure at most corners. Leather shows a few light scuffs but remains quite supple and intact. Text blocks mildly toned but otherwise intact with firm bindings. Slight dampstaining at top corners of text block on both volumes not bleeding into margins or affecting interior in any way mentioned as a very minor cosmetic issue. The Mercers' School was founded by the Worshipful Company of Mercers in London in the 16th century and operated until 1959. Blank leaf following front endpapers in vol. 1 bears bookplate of the same armorial decoration and written below: "Reward of Merit to Master John Faulkner Mercers School Midsummer 1848." On the following blank leaf is a gift inscription from John Faulkner to his son J. Faulkner Jr. dated 1894. Engraved bookplate on each front fixed endpaper of J. Faulkner Junr. This is the obituary for the remarkable English scholar, explorer and Orientalist, Richard Francis Burton, who was known for his travels and explorations within Asia and Africa as well as his extraordinary knowledge of languages and cultures. He died at the age of 69 on Wednesday 22 October 1890, at Trieste. Burton's best-known achievements include traveling in disguise to Mecca, making an unexpurgated translation of "The Book of One Thousand Nights and A Night", and the "Kama Sutra" as well as journeying with John Hanning Speke to discover the Great Lakes of Africa in search of the source of the Nile. He was a prolific author and wrote numerous books and scholarly articles about subjects including travel, fencing and ethnography. He was a captain in the army of the East India Company serving in India. Following this he was engaged by the Royal Geographical Society to explore the east coast of Africa and led an expedition which discovered Lake Tanganyika. In later life he served as British consul in Fernando Po, Damascus and, finally, Trieste. He was a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and was awarded a knighthood (KCMG) in 1886.
