‎ROMAN OSTIA‎

‎Oxford University Press. Fair in Fair dust jacket. 1960. First Edition. Hardcover. Rear inner hinge cracked. Dampstaining to rear board to upper edges of some pages. Scholar's name to inner cover Mark Possanza. DJ has some tears and staining. Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; Ostia an ancient town on the coast facing the Tyrrhenian Sea in Latium Italy was the harbour of ancient Rome and perhaps its first colonia. Located at the mouth of the River Tiber Ostia was said to have been founded by Ancus Marcius one of the kings of Rome in the 7th century BC. However the most ancient archaeological remains so far discovered are no earlier than the 4th century BC and the most ancient buildings currently visible are from the 3rd century BC notably the Castrum military camp and of a slightly later date the Capitolium temple of Jupiter Juno and Minerva. The opus quadratum walls of the original castrum at Ostia provide important evidence for the building techniques that were employed in Roman urbanism during the period of the Middle Republic. Although Ostia was probably founded for the sole purpose of military defence — since through the Tiber's mouths armies could eventually reach Rome by water — in time the port became a commercial harbour and a very important one too. Many of the goods that Rome received from its colonies and provinces passed through Ostia. In this role Ostia soon replaced Pozzuoli. ; 1.54 x 9.51 x 6.45 Inches; 598 pages . ‎THE ROMAN WORLD OF CICERO'S DE ORATORE‎

‎Oxford University Press. Near Fine with no dust jacket. 2006. Hardcover. 0199263159 . Digitally reprinted; 364 pages; The Roman World of Cicero's De Oratore aims to provide an accessible study of Cicero's first and fullest dialogue on the ideal orator-statesman. It illustrates the dialogue's achievement as a reflection of a civilized way of life and a brilliantly constructed literary unity and considers the contribution made by Cicero's recommendations to the development of rhetoric and higher education at Rome. Because Cicero deliberately set his extended conversation in the generation of his childhood teachers a study of the dialogue in its historical setting can show how the political and cultural life of this earlier period differed from Cicero's personal experience of the collapse of senatorial government when the overwhelming power of the "first triumvirate" forced him into political silence in the last decade of the republic. After an introductory chapter reviewing Cicero's position on return from exile chapters include a comparative study of the careers of M. Antonius and L. Licinius Crassus protagonists of the dialogue a discussion of Cicero's response to Plato's criticisms of rhetoric in the Gorgias and Phaedrus and his debt to Aristotle's Rhetoric analysis of the dialogue's treatment of Roman civil law existing Latin literature and historical writing Strabo's survey of the sources and application of humor political eloquence in senate and contio theories of diction and style and the techniques of oral delivery. An epilogue looks briefly at Cicero's De re publica and Tacitus' Dialogus de oratoribus as reflections on the transformation of oratory and free if oligarchic republican government by debate to meet the context of the new autocracy. . ‎THE AGE OF CINNA Crucible of Late Republican Rome‎

‎Franz Steiner Verlag. Very Good. 2002. Softcover. 3515079483 . Very faint shelfwear. ; The years 91–82 B. C. Witnessed the reforms factional competition and civil strife that sowed the seeds of the Republic’s eventual destruction. This book investigates that crucial decade in the social and political development of Rome by re-examining the career of L. Cornelius Cinna one of the most enigmatic tragic yet fascinating figures in all of Roman history; his regime “dominated” Rome from 87 to 82 B. C. This study attempts to explain how why and how successfully Cinna and his faction as champions of Rome’s discontented and obstacle of Rome’s conservatives dealt with those pressing problems that then plagued Rome. Cinna emerges as a competent military strategist and an astute politician who through conviction and ambition rose to head an unusual coalition. His “dominatio” was no military despotism; his faction did not exercise absolute or tyrannical authority over the State. Rather Cinna’s regime ensured political and economic stability and preserved and promoted the Roman State at a time when it surely might have collapsed. ; Historia - Einzelschriften 158; 6.5 X 0.5 X 9.25 inches; 188 pages . ‎THE FAMILY IN ANCIENT ROME New Perspectives‎

‎Croom Helm. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1986. Hardcover. 0709942028 . Scholar's name to ffep D. Gerber. 1 corner lightly bumped. Book and Dustjacket have minor shelfwear. ; Little has been published on the Roman family a subject of central importance to political as well as social history. It was the family that determined political power; it was within the family that the distinctive relationships of one citizen to another were forged and exemplified. The Family in Ancient Rome provides an overview of the state of research by presenting some of the most important work being done in this area. In addition to a survey of the literature on all aspects of the Roman family the book begins with a general picture of the main features of the family. More specialized essays deal with the legal evidence wills and property rights which were of particular importance for the position of women; with the link between property disposition dowry and divorce; with the authority of the male head of the household and its relation to political power; with the status of children born of unions between slaves and citizen; and with the rearing of and attitudes toward children. ; 288 pages; Isbn: 0801418739 . ‎ROMAN SEXUALITIES‎

‎Princeton University Press. Good. 1997. Paperback. 0691011788 . Staining to foreedges of some pages moisture. ; This collection of essays seeks to establish Roman constructions of sexuality and gender difference as a distinct area of research complementing work already done on Greece to give a fuller picture of ancient sexuality. By applying feminist critical tools to forms of public discourse including literature history law medicine and political oratory the essays explore the hierarchy of power reflected so strongly in most Roman sexual relations where noblemen acted as the penetrators and women boys and slaves the penetrated. In many cases the authors show how these roles could be inverted--in ways that revealed citizens' anxieties during the days of the early Empire when traditional power structures seemed threatened. In the essays Jonathan Walters defines the impenetrable male body as the ideational norm; Holt Parker and Catharine Edwards treat literary and legal models of male sexual deviance; Anthony Corbeill unpacks political charges of immoral behavior at banquets while Marilyn B. Skinner Ellen Oliensis and David Fredrick trace linkages between social status and the gender role of the male speaker in Roman lyric and elegy; Amy Richlin interrogates popular medical belief about the female body; Sandra R. Joshel examines the semiotics of empire underlying the historiographic portrayal of the empress Messalina; Judith P. Hallett and Pamela Gordon critique Roman caricatures of the woman-desiring woman; and Alison Keith discovers subversive allusions to the tragedy of Dido in the elegist Sulpicia's self-depiction as a woman in love. ; 368 pages . ‎WOMEN'S RELIGIOUS ACTIVITY IN THE ROMAN REPUBLIC‎

‎The University of North Carolina Press. Very Good- in Very Good dust jacket. 2006. Hardcover. 0807830186 . Some pencilling. 1 page corner creased. A few pages have small stain to edges. Minor edgewear to DJ. ; Expanding the discussion of religious participation of women in ancient Rome Celia E. Schultz demonstrates that in addition to observances of marriage fertility and childbirth there were more--and more important--religious opportunities available to Roman women than are commonly considered. Based on research in ancient literature inscriptions and archaeological remains from the fifth to the first century B. C. E. Schultz's study shows that women honored gods unaffiliated with domestic matters including Hercules and Jupiter; they took part in commercial military and political rites; they often worshipped alongside men; and they were not confined to the private sphere the traditional domain of women. The Vestal Virgins did not stand alone but were instead the most prominent members of a group of women who held high-profile religious positions: priestesses of Ceres Liber and Venus; the flaminica Dialis and the regina sacrorum; other cult officials; and aristocratic matrons who often took leading roles in religious observances even though they were not priestesses. Schultz argues that women were vital participants--both professional and nonprofessional--in the religion of the Roman Republic and that social and marital status in addition to gender were important factors in determining their opportunities for religious participation in the public sphere. ; Studies in the History of Greece and Rome; 248 pages . ‎University of Arkansas Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1987. Hardcover. 0938626647 . Former owner's bookplate to ffep. Faint rounding to upper corners. Minor creasing to DJ. ; When people think of the great generals of the Late Roman Republic most think of Pompey The Great and Julius Caesar but there were other more obscure men who were just as great in their military prowess such as Lucullus. Another one of those men was Quintus Sertorius the last Marian general who successfully repelled every commander sent against him in Spain for almost 12 years. Phillip Spann does a great job at bringing this facinating character out of obscurity: recounting his exploits and exploring what his true motives may have been. ; 239 pages . ‎Oxford Clarendon Press. Good with no dust jacket. 1971. Hardcover. 0198142870 . E Ex-library copy with usual stamps call numbers and pocket. Front hinge cracked but holding. Minor rubbing to boards. ; This book is about Roman religion in the age of Caesar beginning with the ancestral cults of the Gens Julia at Bovillae and ending with the new cult of Divus Julius all over the Roman Empire. It deals with the old gods politico-religious ideas and ruler cult. Caesar is at the centre as religious reformer rather than modern rationalist. This aspect of him though remote and unfamiliar rounds out the portrait of Caesar as the founder of the Empire of which one may get an occasional glimpse in the later writings of Mommsen but which has since been too seldom presented. ; 490 pages .
