ROME IN THE LATE REPUBLIC
Ithaca: Cornell University Press. Very Good. 1985. Softcover. 0801493331 . Light rubbin to wraps with a bit of colour loss. Scholar's name to titlepage Robert Brown. ; 8vo; 106 pages; What were the reasons for the Roman revolution wherein a republican form of government that had endured for centuries suddenly gave way after civil war to a dictatorship which eventually dissolved under the peaceful sway of an autocratic principate When did the process of change begin what were its significant stages and how are we to make sense of it These are some of the questions addressed by two able scholars in this remarkably concise and accomplished survey of the history of the late Roman Republic. Setting themselves the challenging goal of making the first century comprehensible in twentieth-century terms Mary Beard and Michael Crawford outline the factors that must be assessed for a proper understanding of the period-- from the attitudes of the aristocracy and the role of the state religion to the function of political institutions and the reasons for imperial expansion. They offer no simple explanations but instead supply a descriptive framework that clarifies a mass of conflicting and fragmentary evidence. Ideal for both introductory and graduate courses in the later Roman Republic this book will make stimulating and provocative reading for anyone interested in the history of ancient Rome. From the Index: 1. The Nature of the Problem 2.The Cultural Horizons of the Aristocracy 3. Religion 4. Political Institutions 5. The Working of Politics 6. Rome and the Outside World . A few pages corner creased. ; Clarendon Paperbacks; 578 pages; This book explores the practicalities cultural assumptions and affective possibilities of marriage during the later Republic and the Principate. It offers a fresh look at the interaction of law and reality within Roman marriage and builds on the accumulation of legal scholarship in the field as well as on the the latest insights into Roman society. Treggiari demonstrates that marriage affected a Roman woman's social status and that while the socio-legal effect on a man was far less striking marriage did enable a man to father legitimate children the main object of the institution. The study also addresses the influences on the choice of partner behavioral norms and motives for divorce. . Oxford University Press paperback

NY: St. Martin's Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1999. Hardcover. 0312199589 . Scholar's name to ffep Robert Brown. Else book is fine. DJ has very light shelfwear. ; Romans and Barbarians sees the clash of cultures from the standpoint of four individuals whose curious fate it was to venture or be sent beyond the outer watchtowers of the Roman empire. They bore witness from the grassy steppe of Europe's southeastern corner; from across the grim Carpathians towering beyond the Danube; from the fearsome German forest; and from beyond the Firth of Forth in the wilderness of northern-most Britain. Each portrait reveals different aspects of the Sarmatian German and Celtic peoples facing the empire's European frontiers. Together these four viewpoints provide a rich portrait of the classical and Iron Age worlds mutually uncomprehending yet strangely unable to do without each other. The outcome is a skein of violence tragedy misadventure and courage offering a preview of the cruel but creative forces from whose fusion modern Europe was eventually to emerge. ; 237 pages . Else minor shelfwear. ; 9.75 x 1.75 x 6.5 Inches; 528 pages; For centuries Julius Caesar has endured in our collective imagination as a favorite among historians and scholars playwrights and poets. In legend he lives as the great conqueror of Rome's immense empire a remarkable diplomat and writer an unrivaled heartbreaker and a man of relentless determination who met a seemingly tragic end. Caesar examines the riveting story of a complex man within the context of the crisis of the Roman republic. Meier vividly reconstructs the distinctive features of this age by emphasizing the prevalent educational practices that imposed limitations on individual development. Meier clearly shows that Caesar early on established himself as a man whose unique drive self-confidence and detachment would bring him into continual conflict with established institutions. What were the political and social forces that shaped and challenged this extraordinary individual And how did this larger-than-life leader truly affect the fate of the Roman republic and the course of history Internationally renowned historian Christian Meier explores these questions in the most authoritative and accessible account ot Julius Caesar's life career and legacy. . CAESAR A Life in Western Culture
University Of Chicago Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 2008. Hardcover. 0226921530 . Very faint shelfwear to book and DJ. Scholar's name to half-title Robert Brown. ; More than two millennia have passed since Brutus and his companions murdered Julius Caesarand inaugurated his legend. Though the assassins succeeded in ending Caesars dictatorship they could never have imagined that his power and influence would only grow after his death reaching mythic proportions and establishing him as one of the central icons of Western culture fascinating armchair historians and specialists alike. With Caesar Maria Wyke takes up the question of just why Julius Caesar has become such an exalted figure when most of his fellow Romans have long been forgotten. Focusing on key events in Caesars life she begins with accounts from ancient sources then traces the ways in which his legend has been adapted and employed by everyone from Machiavelli to Madison Avenue Shakespeare to George Bernard Shaw. Napoleon and Mussolini for example cited Caesars crossing of the Rubicon in defense of their own dictatorial aims while John Wilkes Booth fancied himself a new Brutus ridding America of an imperial scourge. Caesars personal life too has long been fair gamebut the lessons we draw from it have changed: Suetonius derided Caesar for his lustfulness and his love of luxury but these days he and his lover Cleopatra serve as the very embodiment of glamour enticingly invoked everywhere from Caesars Palace in Las Vegas to the hit HBO series Rome. ; 288 pages . Bohec Yann Le
THE IMPERIAL ROMAN ARMY
B. T. Batsford. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1994. Hardcover. 0713471662 . Book is fine. DJ is price-clipped. ; The Emperor Augustus believed that the Roman army occupied a crucial place at the heart of the empire and it was he who made it a fully professional force. This book looks at the structure and development of the army between the Republic and the Late Empire examining why the army has always been accorded such a prominent position in the history of the Roman Empire and whether that view is justified. The book is divided into three sections. The author first examines the major divisions of army organization - the legions the auxiliary units the fleet - and how the men were recruited. Secondly he looks at what the army did - the training tactics and strategy. Finally he considers the historical role of the army - how it fitted into Roman society of which it was only part and what influence it had economically and politically. In exploring these themes the author gives equal weight to epigraphic documentary and archaeological evidence. With tables summarizing detailed information Yann Le Bohec provides a synthesis of current knowledge of the Roman army from the first to the third century AD putting it in its context as part of the state structure of the Roman Empire. ; 9.75 x 1.25 x 6.75 Inches; 304 pages . ANATOLICA Studies in Strabo
Oxford University Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1995. First Edition. Hardcover. 0198149433 . DJ spine is sunned and discolored now in brodart. Light bump to top corner of book with small scratches to front board. ; No historian of ancient Rome in this century has had a greater influence on historical research or won greater international acclaim than Sir Ronald Syme 1903-89. His outstanding position was due mainly to his first two books The Roman Revolution which appeared in 1939 and Tacitus two volumes 1958 - although he went on to produce many more monographs and seven volumes of his Roman Papers have so far appeared. The long gap between his first two books is partly explained by the war which took him on official duties to Belgrade and Ankara and he spent the years 1943-5 at Istanbul as Professor of Classical Philology. It was known that in spite of the war Syme had continued to write in these years in particular 'Strabonia' investigations into the famous ancient Geography composed by Strabo a native of Asia Minor in the time of Augustus. After Syme's death the manuscript was discovered among his papers: he had not quite completed the work but what he had written with almost complete annotation represents a substantial and fascinating study of the historical geography of Anatolia in the Hellenistic and early Roman period. Syme ruthlessly dissects the often incoherent and inconsistent text of Strabo at the same time providing rich detail on client kings Roman generals and emperors writers and travellers. Above all he shows unequalled ability to understand the landscape and settlement of Anatolia. ; 424 pages . Oxford University Press hardcover

JULIUS CAESAR
Tempus Publishing. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 2001. Hardcover. 0752414437 . DJ is in mylar. ; This new study of Julius Caesar's life and achievements follows the author's widely acclaimed books on Mark Anthony and Cleopatra and completes her trilogy on the Late Republic. As Pat Southern makes clear although we know what Caesar did we do not really know who he was. Certain features stand out but do not make up the whole man - his staggering energy the ruthlessness and determination to achieve what he wanted the loyalty that he inspired in some people and the extreme hatred in others. He became close to being defeated in battle but never lost a war. He caused the deaths of many but did not proscribe thousands like Marius and Sulla before him and Anthony and Octavian after him. His aim was to improve augment and streamline the administration of Rome and the provinces. To do that he needed supreme power and in achieving it he formed the bridge between the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire. ; 0.61 x 9.48 x 6.34 Inches; 160 pages . Tempus Publishing hardcover

Corners very lightly bumped. ; Roman Imperial Biographies; 0.95 x 9.43 x 6.38 Inches; 271 pages; Augustus the heir to Julius Caesar was the guiding light in the transformation of the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire. In this biography Pat Southern traces the life and works of the emperor chronologically presenting idealogy and events as they occurred from Augustus' point of view including his transition from heir and successor of Julius Caesar to head of the new Principate and his development of the Roman Empire. Augustus did not have a master plan of politics and legislation but instead he had to wait and occasionally change course before he settled on a version of government that the Senate and people found acceptable. While there have been many books covering the political social and aesthetic culture of the Augustan Age this is the first book to present the life of Augustus the man. . Routledge hardcover

AUGUSTUS
Routledge. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 1998. Hardcover. 0415166314 . Book is fine. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear ; Roman Imperial Biographies; 0.95 x 9.43 x 6.38 Inches; 271 pages; Augustus the heir to Julius Caesar was the guiding light in the transformation of the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire.

He analyzes Constantine's rise to power and his government demonstrating how Constantine's sincere adherence to Christianity advanced his political aims. SPARTACUS
Bristol Classical Press. Near Fine. 2004. Softcover. 1853996688 . Very light shelfwear else fine. ; For many today Spartacus is Kirk Douglas. The influence of Kubrick's film has been enormous but Spartacus was famous before 1960. For hundreds of years he has been a byword for resistance revolution and the fight for freedom. He has given his name to a revolutionary party in Germany and a political group in the USA; he is the subject of several novels and films and even a ballet. Though only a slave he is as famous as Julius Caesar. Not much information and much of it negative survives about him from the ancient world yet his reputation has survived this character assassination and he is still famous as a popular hero two thousand years after his death. Theresa Urbainczyk explores the man and the myth in this fascinating short treatment of an icon of revolution. ; Ancients in Action; 144 pages . Bristol Classical Press paperback
