DER KÖRPER DES PRINCEPS Zur Problematik Eines Monarchischen Körpers Ohne Monarchie
Franz Steiner Verlag. Fine with no dust jacket. 2012. Hardcover. 3515100806 . English summary: Bodies are not historical constants and their perception and their symbolic value can vary considerably. This is especially true for the early Roman Principate when a monarchical body appeared with the emperor that moved in a supposedly republican society. While during the late Republican period the external appearance of Roman aristocrats above all their clothing and public performance were socially relevant this traditional perception of the body was no longer pertinent to the body of the princeps. Because he did not appear overtly monarchical his physical body in the Republican period a widely held indicator of individuality was meaningful in an entirely new way. Therefore the social and political changes led to new perceptions about what a body really is. ; Historia - Einzelschriften 223; 327 pages . Franz Steiner Verlag hardcover

Franz Steiner Verlag. Near Fine. 2012. Softcover. 3515099042 . Very very light shelfwear else fine. ; English summary: How did the Roman veterans make their lives after the end of the term of service and discharge from the army What positions did they take in the social and economic structures of their chosen residences There is scarcely other source material that offers more answers to these questions than that which remains in the surviving papyri from Egypt. Patrick Sanger uses the document collections of the veterans Aelius Sarapammon and Aelius Syrion to make possible a thorough analysis of the socio-economic position of the two protagonists who made their home in Ankyronpolis a village of mid-Egyptian region of Herakleopolis. The pertinent 19 archival texts P. Vet. Aelii span the time from the end of the 2nd to the middle of the 3rd century CR and are presented here some for the first time and some as a new edition. These documents which will not only garner interest by reason of their time period but also their contents serve as the point of departure for a presentation of the socio-economic situation of veterans in Egypt and other provinces of the Roman Empire as well as for the detailed study of the legal and administrative history. THE ANTONINES The Roman Empire in Transition
Routledge. Very Good. 1996. Softcover. 0415138140 . Some edgewear to wraps. Shelfwear. ; 0.87 x 9.21 x 6.22 Inches; 210 pages; The Roman Empire was an achievement of startling proportions. In its size alone it extended from the Atlantic to the Euphrates and from the Rhine to Danube all the way to the Sahara. In many ways as the global question of emerging national identities persists and attempts at multinational unity fail Rome's vast empire becomes an extremely relevant historical lesson. In The Antonines the eminent historian of classical history Michael Grant examines the vital role played by the Antonines in the development and expansion of the Roman Empire. He surveys that period's renowned contributions to the arts discussing at length Marcus Aurelius's Meditations perhaps one of the greatest literary products of the classical world. He suggests that the Antonines occasioned a major transition in Roman life politics and that the period over which they presided witnessed extraordinary changes that heralded a new epoch to many. The Antonines he argues were singularly responsible for ushering the Roman Empire from the ancient world to the early Medieval. Grant examines the political dynamics that brought about these changes analyzing such issues as the role of "adoption" the policy of choosing Emperors who were not direct descendants of the throne. He profiles the individuals who made up the Antonines: of Antoninus Pius an altogether understudied figure who curiously bequeathed his position to two men particularly unfit to rule his vast and efficacious regime; Marcus Aurelius an avid militarist who could oddly find the time to write one of the best works of Roman literature known to date; Commodus and his abandonment of imperial ambitions in what is presently Germany and the implications it had on the decline of the Empire as well as his emphasis on monotheism within the terms of Roman religion. Grant's historical analysis provides a thorough and above all high-minded look at this often neglected yet critical period in the Roman Empire--a period that not only illuminates the processes of dramatic transformation but presents a point of comparison to the current historical circumstance as well. . VITA VIGILIA EST Essays in Honour of Barbara Levick
Institute of Classical Studies. Very Good. 2008. Softcover. 1905670141 . Inscribed to scholar R. E. Fantham from one of the contributors Geraldine Herbert-Brown on ffep. Light creasing to corners of wraps. Minor shelfwear. ; Institute of Classical Studies Bulletin Supplement 97; 193 pages; The new millennium sees both Pliny the Elder and his massive encyclopaedic Natural History being studied more seriously and holistically than at any time in the preceding century. The essays in this volume which honour the seminal work of Barbara Levick on the politics and society of imperial Rome above all in the period of Plinys life and literary activity further this re-assessment. They consider aspects of Plinys life and output which have not so far received serious attention. These include his value as a source for the kings of Rome and their achievements; his attitude to astronomy and natural wonders to gentilician commemoration philosophical sects Roman dress and coinage; and his moral judgements on the fall of the Republic. The essays consider the ideological climate of the Flavian period as reflected not only in Plinys attitude to the past but in his construction of Rome and Italy and his relationship to contemporary writers like Licinius Mucianus. Pliny emerges clearly as a major literary and cultural figure of the early Empire. ; Signed by Contributor . Institute of Classical Studies paperback

CONVIVIUM Form Und Bedeutung Aristokratischer Geselligkeit in Der Römischen Antik
Franz Steiner Verlag. Fine with no dust jacket. 2011. Hardcover. 3515098607 . . VITA VIGILIA EST Essays in Honour of Barbara Levick
Institute of Classical Studies. Fine. 2008. Softcover. 1905670141 . Institute of Classical Studies Bulletin Supplement 97; 193 pages; The new millennium sees both Pliny the Elder and his massive encyclopaedic Natural History being studied more seriously and holistically than at any time in the preceding century. Pliny emerges clearly as a major literary and cultural figure of the early Empire. . Institute of Classical Studies paperback
