PROPERTY AND PIETY IN EARLY MEDIEVAL WINCHESTER Documents Relating to the Topography of the Anglo-Saxon and Norman City and Its Minsters
Oxford University Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 2003. Hardcover. 0198134134 . Top of book is bumped otherwise minor shelfwear to extremities. Dustjacket has a few small nicks and tears along top edge. Dustjacket has shelfwear and rubbing. ; Winchester Studies 4.III: the Anglo-Saxon Minsters of Winchester; 1.26 x 11.02 x 8.82 Inches; 300 pages; Property and Piety comprises an edition and translation with extensive commentary of thirty-three Anglo-Saxon and Norman documents relating to the topography and minsters of early medieval Winchester. These texts record the physical effects on the city of the foundation and expansion of the three neighbouring minsters and also of the removal of the New Minster to Hyde in about 1110. They record political religious and cultural aspects of the tenth-century reform of Benedictine monasticism of which Winchester was a leading centre. The splendid New Minster refoundation charter composed by Bishop AEthelwold and granted by King Edgar in 966 is here translated for the first time. A full examination is also made of the old minster confirmation charter probably fabricated in the reign of AEthelred. The volume also includes all Anglo-Saxon grants of land within Winchester and a reappraisal of the evidence for the beneficial hidation of the surrounding estate of Chilcomb. This volume is part of a three-book study in the Winchester Studies series of the Anglo-Saxon Minsters of Winchester including 4.i The Anglo-Saxon Minsters by Martin Biddle and Birthe Kjolbye-Biddle and 4.ii The Cult of St Swithun by Michael Lapidge. . THE ROMAN EMPIRE AND ITS GERMANIC PEOPLES
University of California Press. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1997. Hardcover. 0520085116 . Dustjacket is protected in mylar. Minor scuffing to boards. ; 1.1 x 9.2 x 6.2 Inches; 379 pages; The names of early Germanic warrior tribes and leaders resound in songs and legends; the real story of the part they played in reshaping the ancient world is no less gripping. Herwig Wolfram's panoramic history spans the great migrations of the Germanic peoples and the rise and fall of their kingdoms between the third and eighth centuries as they invaded settled in and ultimately transformed the Roman Empire. As Germanic military kings and their fighting bands created kingdoms and won political and military recognition from imperial governments through alternating confrontation and accommodation the "tribes" lost their shared culture and social structure and became sharply differentiated. They acquired their own regions and their own histories which blended with the history of the empire. In Wolfram's words "the Germanic peoples neither destroyed the Roman world nor restored it; instead they made a home for themselves within it. " This story is far from the "decline and fall" interpretation that held sway until recent decades. Wolfram's narrative based on his sweeping grasp of documentary and archaeological evidence brings new clarity to a poorly understood period of Western history. . CHANGES IN THE ROMAN EMPIRE Essays in the Ordinary
Princeton University Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1990. Hardcover. 0691036012 . Dustjacket and book have minor shelfwear and rubbing. ; 1.25 x 9.75 x 6.75 Inches; 416 pages; Written by one of the foremost historians of the Roman Empire this collection of both new and previously published essays forms a colorful picture of daily life in the Mediterranean world between A.D. 50 and 450. Here for example the author applies statistical analysis to broad groups of people on matters ranging from justice through medicine to language. In so doing he is able to substantiate general statements about routines in ordinary people's behavior and to detect within these routines the very changes that constitute history. Such analysis also shows how this era benefits from the same historiographical approaches that have so successfully elucidated sociocultural phenomena in other periods. Drawing from statistical analysis and many other historical approaches these essays on popular mores in the Roman Empire cover such topics as language and art acculturation thought and religion sex and gender cruelty and slavery and aspects of class and power relations. The author introduces the collection with several essays on historical method as it pertains to the richness of documentation and variety to be found in the region and period chosen. . ROMAN COINS AND PUBLIC LIFE UNDER THE EMPIRE E. Togo Salmon Papers II
University of Michigan Press. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 1999. Hardcover. 0472108751 . Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; 0.72 x 9.48 x 6.2 Inches; 216 pages; Roman coins often shed light on Roman public life and society through the legends portraits and images they bear. The papers collected in this volume were originally presented at the Second E. Togo Salmon Conference on Roman Studies. The eight contributors are specialists in Roman coins or Roman history and in the relations between them. Coins are a unique source of information about the Roman world. In the case of the Roman Empire they were issued by or with the approval of the ruling power. The representations and legends they show therefore present an official view of contemporary affairs. The coins themselves minted for official purposes such as paying the army when studied carefully can help reconstruct official policies. They can also occasionally reveal what monuments now lost may have looked like. It is not infrequent to come across pleas that the ancient historian should make more frequent use of numismatic evidence. These essays make clear that efforts are being made both by numismatists and by historians to bring the two disciplines together. At the same time the papers reveal that the task is by no means a straightforward one. The survival of Roman coins is variable and so attempts to reconstruct the size and distribution of issues calls for skilled and experienced analysis. This collection of papers provides evidence for the kind of deductions that the historian may make from Roman coins as well as the illustrations of the pitfalls that await the unwary. Those interested in Roman history amateur coin collectors and professional numismatists will all find much here to widen their knowledge of the public context of Roman coins. Contributors: William E. Metcalf P. Bruun Barbara Levick R. P. Duncan-Jones Anthony Barrett Duncan Fishwick C. E. King Andrew Burnett. . University of Michigan Press hardcover

Moorhead, John
THEODERIC IN ITALY
Oxford Clarendon Press. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 1997. Hardcover. 0198147813 . Special Edition for Sandpiper Books; Oxford University Press Academic Monograph Reprints; 0.75 x 9 x 6 Inches; 312 pages; The career of Theoderic the Ostrogoth is one of the great success stories of antiquity. From being a ruler of a barbarian people wandering around the Balkans he became king in Italy 493-526 and established one of the most powerful of the post-Roman states. Due to its ample documentation the Italy of Theoderic allows detailed examination of a period on the frontiers of ancient and medieval Roman and barbarian. And due to his success in attracting the attention of some of the major literary figures of the time new light is cast on Boethius Cassiodorus and Ennodius when they are considered in the context of their connections with the government. Yet Theoderic's reign so praised by contemporaries ended amid tension and discord. In this study Moorhead considers whether the principles with which he governed brought about the impermanence of his achievement. . Oxford Clarendon Press hardcover

ROME AND THE ENEMY Imperial Strategy in the Principate
University of California Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. 1999. Hardcover. 0520211669 . Former owner's name on ffep. Dustjacket has very minor shelfwear. ; 1 x 9.25 x 6.25 Inches; 277 pages; How did the Romans build and maintain one of the most powerful and stable empires in the history of the world This illuminating book draws on the literature especially the historiography composed by the members of the elite who conducted Roman foreign affairs. From this evidence Susan P. Mattern reevaluates the roots motivations and goals of Roman imperial foreign policy especially as that policy related to warfare. In a major reinterpretation of the sources Rome and the Enemy shows that concepts of national honor fierce competition for status and revenge drove Roman foreign policy and though different from the highly rationalizing strategies often attributed to the Romans dictated patterns of response that remained consistent over centuries. Mattern reconstructs the world view of the Roman decision-makers the emperors and the elite from which they drew their advisers. She discusses Roman conceptions of geography strategy economics and the influence of traditional Roman values on the conduct of military campaigns. She shows that these leaders were more strongly influenced by a traditional stereotyped perception of the enemy and a drive to avenge insults to their national honor than by concepts of defensible borders. In fact the desire to enforce an image of Roman power was a major policy goal behind many of their most brutal and aggressive campaigns. Rome and the Enemy provides a fascinating look into the Roman mind in addition to a compelling re-examination of Roman conceptions of warfare and national honor. The resulting picture creates a new understanding of Rome's long mastery of the Mediterranean world. . University of California Press hardcover

THE VISIGOTHS FROM THE MIGRATION PERIOD TO THE SEVENTH CENTURY An Ethnographic Perspective
Boydell Press. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1999. Hardcover. 0851157629 . Dustjacket has very minor rubbing. ; Studies in Historical Archaeoethnology; 1.8 x 9.77 x 6.98 Inches; 488 pages; Between 376 and 476 the Roman Empire in western Europe was dismantled by aggressive outsiders `barbarians' as the Romans labelled them. Chief among these were the Visigoths a new force of previously separate Gothic and other groups from south-west France initially settled by the Romans but subsequently from the middle of the fifth century achieving total independence from the failing Roman Empire and extending their power from the Loire to the Straits of Gibraltar. These studies draw on literary and archaeological evidence to address important questions thrown up by the history of the Visigoths and of the kingdom they generated: the historical processes which led to their initial creation; the emergence of the Visigothic kingdom in the fifth century; and the government society culture and economy of the `mature' kingdom of the sixth and seventh centuries. A valuable feature of the collection reflecting the switch of the centre of the Visigothic kingdom from France to Spain from the beginning of the sixth century is the inclusion in English of current Spanish scholarship.
