Franca Rame & Dario Fo.
A Woman Alone & Other Plays.
London UK Methuen Drama 1991. Paperback Reprint Edition. Near Fine in Wraps: shows only the most minute indications of use: just a hint of wear to extremities; the pages have tanned slightly due to aging. Binding shows barely discernible lean while remaining perfectly secure; text clean. Very close to 'As New'. NOT a Remainder Book-Club or Ex-Library. 8vo. 206pp. Translated by Gillian Hanna Ed Emery and Christopher Cairns. Introduced by Stuart Hood and Gillian Hanna. Reprint Edition reissed with a new cover design in 1993. Trade Paperback. This volume contains 20 monologues. With Dario Fo's satirical wit and Franca Rame's ability to produce real-life situations this book is a must-read for all interested in the dramatic arts. A Woman Alone the title monologue is arguably the most brilliant of Fo and Rame's combined efforts. It is the story of Sharon a woman imprisoned in her flat by her husband after committing adultery with a boy young enough to be her son. The monolgue is expressed through Sharon speaking to her neighbour in the next block of industrial flats. On the outside it appears that Sharon is well provided by her husband Bryan with all the material possesions she could ever need. But on the inside her life is empty. Though the title suggests that Sharon is "alone" in her flat technically that is not the truth her baby boy and her husband's molestering invalid brother both reside in the flat. Sharon's life however is void of emotion- love compassion and sympathy. WIth an intriguing story and a satisfying ending A Woman Alone makes an excellent read and performance. I highly recommend A Woman Alone and Other Plays for all drama enthusiasts. Methuen Drama, paperback

Merde Happens.

DJ unclipped; mylar-protected. As New. NOT a Remainder Book-Club or Ex-Library. 8vo. 370pp. Hardback with DJ. I have a special fondness for Clake's brand of humour. I have enjoyed all three of these "Merde" books over the years. And they are all so entertaining! In this one he takes on America and while I am VERY disappointed that he didn't visit Chicago on his tour I still found myself laughing along with his over-the-top misadventures. It's an enjoyable and entertaining read and I'm eager to see what happens next with Paul West - and to see what projects Clarke tackles in the future. Bloomsbury USA, hardcover
