The backs are yellowing the covers are very slightly soiled Wikipedia: 'Merlyn was een literair tijdschrift van Kees Fens H.U. Jessurun d'Oliveira en J.J. Oversteegen. Het blad verscheen voor het eerst in november 1962. Er verschenen vier jaargangen tot en met 1966; het werd uitgegeven door uitgeverij Athenaeum-Polak & Van Gennep. Door Merlyn heeft de techniek van close reading in Nederland ingang gevonden. Het blad reageerde daarmee op de in de jaren vijftig dominante vorm van literaire kritiek waarin volgens de Merlyn-redacteuren veel aandacht was voor filosofie psychologie en moraal terwijl juist de tekst zelf werd veronachtzaamd. Daarmee liet Merlyn de "vorm of vent"-discussie van de jaren dertig in een aantal opzichten herleven. Close reading analyseert en interpreteert literatuur uitsluitend aan de hand van de tekst en de structuur daarvan en laat buitenliteraire factoren buiten beschouwing. De wijze van literatuurbeschouwing van Merlyn heeft grote invloed gehad op de literaire kritiek en literatuurwetenschap in Nederland. Her series Days with the Great Composers Days with the Great Authors Days with the Great Poets and Days with Victorian Poets were published under a number of different pen names: her birth name M. C. Gillington; her married name May Byron; and her pseudonym Maurice Clare. . May Byron's biographies were generally well-received though some critics could not tell if they were first hand or fiction based on research. The books went on to inspire others and her biography A Day with Shakespeare written under the pseudonym 'Maurice Clare' was particularly influential for James Joyce in writing Ulysses'. Paper yellowing Richard McMillan was an influential English World War II correspondent for United Press. He reported from the battlefields of North Africa and Normandy. This is a Dutch translation of his report on Operation Market Garden 17-25 September 1944 an unsuccessful Allied military operation fought in the Netherlands against the German army. The aim was to conquer the bridges across the Rhine at Arnhem and Nijmegen to establish the northern end of a pincer ready to project deeper into Germany. From his obituary at the holdthefrontpagecouk: 'Richard McMillan began at the Scarborough Evening Post at 15 and moved to Fleet Street six months later and held parliamentary and royal correspondent posts at The Times and the Daily Mail. He was assistant editor at Tit Bits and later became editor-in-chief at the Central Office of Information. He worked in Paris for the London Evening Standard and spent time editing newspapers on board liners between England and America during prohibition before recording the events of the Second World War from the heart of the action. Mr McMillan joined the High Commission in Ghana and was part of the team which kept it as a member of the Commonwealth also establishing Africas Institute of Journalism. He reported on events including the Nuremberg Trials was one of only four accredited journalists at the funeral of George V and the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor during his long career. He received an OBE for services to journalism for his war correspondent work but famously returned the medal in 1990 as a defiant gesture against the Poll Tax even appearing in court at the age of 90 for non-payment. Richard McMillan was born in Scotland in 1901 and died at his home in Frilsham West Berkshire a few months short of his 100th birthday'. unknown
