‎Politics by Other Means: the Free German League of Culture in London 1939-1945‎

‎London England / Portland Oregon: Vallentine Mitchell 2010. First Edition. Hardcover. As New/As New. 8vo 8" - 9" tall. Superior copy gift-quality condition inside and out no discernible wear bright and shiny dust jacket illustrated. Bound in black cloth over boards with sharp and distinct gilt lettering to spine. Augmented with a range of sharp black-and-white photographs printed on high-gloss paper. From the publisher blurb "Politics by Other Means traces the development and historical significance of the Free German League of Culture the foremost organization representing anti-Nazi German refugees in Britain during the years of the Second World War. During its lifetime 1939-46 the League held a regular program of cultural events ranging from concerts and theatre performances to publications and art exhibitions as well as a 'university in exile.' Because of the restrictions on refugees imposed by the British authorities this cultural program served very much as a surrogate for direct political activity: the continuation of politics by other means. The study concludes by tracing the fate of those who returned to a now-divided Germany and the post-war integration of those who remained into British arts and society. The book is based largely on primary sources using documentary material held in Frankfurt and Berlin which historians have hitherto neglected thus most of the content and findings are new. Though based on scholarly research the book is written in a readable and accessible style." viii 2 3-253 pp. plus publisher ads.Member I.O.B.A. C.B.A. and adherent to the highest ethical standards. ‎Baden-Baden Germany: Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft 2013. First Edition. Softcover. Fine. 8vo 8" - 9" tall. Sterling condition softcover copy with unfurled tips tight binding and clean internals showing only very slight shelf- and edge-wear. Sterling condition softcover copy with unfurled tips tight binding and clean internals showing only very slight shelf- and edge-wear. Rail transport across political boundaries has existed for a long time. But a good rail service across borders requires coordination and agreement in many fields. Numerous technical standards have to be harmonized but beyond that a common understanding of rail's role on the transport market and agreed service concepts are necessary. However the policy and planning objectives are often different on each side of a border. The book presents an analysis of how common ideas and projects for cross-border transport were developed in the political and planning discourse. Service concepts tariffs and infrastructure are covered as key areas of rail transport. Cases from the late 19th century and the decades after World War II are compared. Difficulties of taking steps back towards a "European" rail network can be experienced even today. The aim to unite Europe on rails often stands in contrast to the technical complexity of the railways increasing competition and diverging ideas." ‎A lot of six 6 issues of Het Toppunt der Beschaving‎

‎Amsterdam the Netherlands: Maatschappy Elsevier / Boek- en Staandrukkerlj v. h. Ellerman Harms & Co. First Edition. Softcover. Fair. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. A consecutive run of the first six 6 issues of a leading anti-war anti-German political and literary magazine Het Toppunt der Beschaving The Summit of Civilization which ran for two years. It featured the excellent artistic talents and lithographs of Louis Raemaekers 1869-1956 one of the most successful propagandists of the W.W.I. period. Steve Goddard put together a 2010 exhibition for the Spencer Museum of Art "Machine in a Void: World War I & the Graphic Arts" that featured his work and highlighted the importance of this magazine. The Netherlands was at the time 1915 a neutral country and became outraged at the reports of German atrocities during the War and these are part of the Dutch response bracing and memorable. Each issue in illustrated softpaper measuring 15 1/2" tall x 12" wide sewn with thread some being worn and loose. Moderately soiled and chipped along edges each issue with illustrated wraps over 12 bound-in fine lithographic reproductions. Each lithograph is captioned in Dutch German English and French. The six issues are: Eerste Serie=zevende druk; Tweede Serie=vijfde druk; Derde Serie=vijfde druk; Vierde Serie=Vierde druk; Vijfde Serie=derde druk; Zesde Serie. The six were published in 1915 and 1916. Louis Raemaekers was so outrageous to German authorities that the latter attempted to have the former put on trial for undercutting Dutch "neutrality" and eventually offered a bounty for Raemaekers to be delivered to them dead or alive of 12000 guilders. This led to Raemaekers to move in exile to England to ride out the war. Louis Raemaekers April 6 1869 – July 26 1956 was formally trained as a painter but became a caricaturist and editorial cartoonist for the Amsterdam newspaper De Telegraaf during W.W.I. The Wikipedia entry about his notes that upon the commencement of W.W.I. Raemaekers' "message was clear: the Netherlands had to take sides for the Allies and abandon its neutral stance. His graphic cartoons depicted the rule of the German military in Belgium portrayed the Germans as barbarians and Kaiser Wilhelm II as an ally of Satan" Wikipedia.Member I.O.B.A. C.B.A. and adherent to the highest ethical standards. ‎History of the Origin and Establishment of the Inquisition in Portugal‎

‎Stanford California: Stanford University Press 1926. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Large 8vo 9" - 10. A stated First Edition being a Stanford University Publications University Series volume the second in their series History Economics and Political Science. Translated by John C. Branner of the original Spanish of Alexandre Herculano. Original softpaper wraps lightly soiled and bearing only the slightest of signs of ex-library status having been bound for library use in burgundy buckram cloth. Ink stamp at front cover penciled note by a librarian at title page else clean and bright. An extremely important social history of the establishment of the Spanish Inquisition in Portugal but that was according to several historians held back from the people of Portugal as was the general expulsion of Jews from Portugal and Spain. Bianca Ferreira's fine Master's Thesis mentions Theodor Adorno's trenchant question "What does one do with the dead is to practice what the past Jews considered to be the worst of all evils: to not remember them. In the face of the dead the men release the despair of not having the capacity to remember themselves.” The present work and other definitive works "circulated only amongst elite scholars it did not reach the Portuguese public of lesser education nor were they adapted for the secondary schools and lyceums." 636 pp. including full notes bibliography and index.Member I.O.B.A. C.B.A. and adherent to the highest ethical standards. ‎The Prince of Princes: The Life of Potemkin‎

‎New York: Thomas Dunne Books an imprint of St. Martin's Press 2001. First Edition. Hardcover. As New/As New. Large 8vo 9" - 10. Massively heavy oversized volume.Fine-looking structurally sound hardcover little discernible wear bright interior unmarked. Gray cloth over boards with silver-stamped lettering to spine. Bright and shiny dust jacket illustrated little worn. From the publisher's blurb " Great love affairs help change history. Catherine the Great of Russia and Grigory Potemkin certainly belong to the list. The name 'Potemkin' is best-known today for a battleship mutiny at the time of the Russian revolution rather than as the one-eyed fat vain autocratic lover of Russia's Empress Catherine the only man she treated as an equal who commanded her armies helped her rule the country and develop the Russian empire. POTEMKIN's life is about power lust and love as enthralling a love story as any fiction. Born of a loveless marriage he worked his way up through the ranks of the Russian army. He first met the Empress Catherine while he was on guard duty in St Petersburg. German-born she was married at fourteen for dynastic reasons but her marriage was never consummated. She took a procession of lovers but showed the longest fidelity to Potemkin. The thousands of letters he and Catherine exchanged often several times each day are one of the sources of Simon Sebag Montifiore's new biography. As a soldier and consummate politician Potemkin's legacy was to secure the boundaries of Russia to the south that we know today. When he died aged only fifty en route to assume the mantle of King of Poland Catherine went into a depression from which she never fully recovered. Sebag Montefiore who worked in Russia for the Sunday Times among other newspapers speaks the language fluently and has taken advantage of the opening up of hitherto closed Russian archives." ‎Eleanor of Aquitaine: Patron and Politician‎

‎Austin Texas: University of Texas Press 1976. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo 8" - 9" tall. Brown cloth over boards sharp and distinct lettering to spine. Bright and shiny dust jacket illustrated little worn but with a tape-repaired dust-jacket else complete and not price-clipped. From the publisher's blurb "Eleanor of Aquitaine was the wife of two kings Louis VII of France and Henry II Plantagenet of England and the mother of two others Richard the Lionhearted and John Lackland. In her eventful often stormy life she not only influenced the course of events in the twelfth century but also encouraged remarkable advances in the literary and fine arts. In this book experts in five disciplines-history art history music French and English literature-evaluate the influence of Eleanor and her court on history and the arts. Elizabeth A. R. Brown views Eleanor as having played a significant role as parent and politician but not as patron. Rebecca A. Baltzer takes a new look at the music of the period that was written by and for Eleanor her court and her family. Moshe Lazar reexamines her relationship to the courtly-love literature of the period. Eleanor S. Greenhill and Larry M. Ayres reassess her influence in the realm of art history. Rossell Hope Robbins traces the lines extending from the French courtly literature of Eleanor's period down into fourteenth-century Chaucerian England. The essays reflect divergent but generally complementary assessments of this remarkable woman's influence on her own era and on future times as well. This volume is the result of a symposium held at the University of Texas in 1973.
