Halblederband der Zeit mit Rückenschild. *"Johann Lorenz Blessig (geb. 1747 in Straßburg; gest. 1816 ebenda) war Professor für Philosophie und Theologie und Mitherausgeber eines Gesangbuches, das im Elsass größte Verbreitung fand. 1778 wurde er außerordentlicher Professor und 1786 ordentlicher Professor in der Philosophischen und 1787 in der Theologischen Fakultät. Er überwarf sich nach einer gegen den Krieg gehaltenen Predigt mit den Zielen der französischen Revolution und ging infolgedessen 1793 nach Nancy in die Verbannung. Er wurde als Gegner der Jakobiner verhaftet und nach Straßburg gebracht, wo er jeden Tag mit einem Todesurteil durch das Revolutionstribunal rechnen musste. Nach dem Sturz Robespierres erlangte er im November 1794, nach elf Monaten die Freiheit wieder. Blessig galt als rationaler Supranaturalist mit mystischem Einschlag und als ein hervorragender Prediger. 245 (1) Seiten. Halblederband der Zeit mit Rückenschild. *Karol Fryderyk Libelt war ein polnischer Publizist, Wissenschaftler, Politiker und Revolutionär. - Libelt war politisch aktiv. Zwischen 1839 und 1845 bestand das Libelt-Komitee zur Vorbereitung eines polnischen Aufstands. Im Jahr 1845 war er auch Mitglied des polnischen Zentral-Revolutionskomitees. Zu Beginn des Jahres 1846 nahm er am Krakauer Aufstand teil. Er war Mitglied der revolutionären polnischen Nationalregierung und Verfasser eines Krakauer Manifests. Seit 1846 kam es in Preußen zu einem Strafverfahren gegen ihn wegen Hochverrats. Die Untersuchungshaft verbrachte er in Posen, Küstrin und zum Schluss in Moabit. Er war einer der Hauptangeklagten im Polenprozess vor dem Berliner Kammergericht. Dieses verurteilte ihn zu 20 Jahren Festungshaft. Majer Balaban was a founder and architect of modern Polish Jewish historiography and the first to synthesize both Polish archival sources and Jewish communal records and rabbinic responsa.
Balaban completed his dissertation in 1904, on Jews in Lwów at the turn of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries (Zydzi lwowscy na przelomie XVIgo I XVIIgo wieku; 1906) . Thereafter he taught in secondary schools until the outbreak of World War I, when he served as a military chaplain in the Austrian army. While stationed in Lublin, he took advantage of the opportunity to prepare a short monograph on the history of Jews in that community. (YIVO Encyclopedia) . In 1921 Tsukunft suffered a split, in which a pro-Communist group broke away and formed Komtsukunft. Tsukunft had applied for membership in the Communist Youth International two weeks after the Bund had applied for membership in the Communist International, but the second congress of the Communist Youth International had adopted criteria that were not acceptable for Tsukunft

Gurland [1843-1890] was born in Kletsk, Belorussia, and was educated at the Vilna rabbinical seminary and at the University of St. Petersburg, where he studied Oriental languages with D. Chwolson. He wrote his dissertation on the influence of Islamic philosophy, in particular the Mutakallimun, Muatazilites, and Asharians, on Maimonides. While employed at the Imperial Library of St. Petersburg, Gurland worked on the Firkovich manuscripts, being one of the first to discover his forgeries; he published the results of this research as Ginzei Yisrael be-St. Petersburg (186567) . In 1873 he was appointed inspector of the Jewish teachers' seminary in Zhitomir; there he published a Yiddish and Russian calendar, entitled in Hebrew Lu'ah Yisrael (187881) , which also contained scholarly articles. After three years in Western Europe, he returned to Russia and founded a Jewish high school in Odessa. In 1888 the government appointed him rabbi of Odessa. Heschel's lifework can be seen as consisting of two parallel strands: (1) the undertaking to study and interpret the classical sources of Judaism and (2) the endeavor to offer to his contemporaries an authentic theology which results from the application of the insights of the traditional sources to the problems and questions which the modern Jew has to face. Hardcover, 8vo, 48 leaves, 24 cm. In Hebrew. SUBJECT (S) : Responsa -- 1600-1800. Hagiz (1672-c. 1751) was a scholar, kabbalist, and opponent of Shabbateanism; son of Jacob Hagiz. He was born in Jerusalem and studied with his grandfather, Moses Galante. He appears to have quarreled in his youth with the rabbis and lay leaders of Jerusalem, for when in 1694 he left Erez Israel to collect money to found a yeshivah in Jerusalem, damaging letters were sent after him to the communities to which he turned. Moses visited Egypt and then Italy, where in 1704 he published his fathers Halakhot Ketannot. He traveled by way of Prague to Amsterdam where he made contact with Zevi Hirsch Ashkenazi, then rabbi of the Ashkenazi community, and collaborated with him in an energetic struggle against Shabbateanism and its secret adherents. When in 1713 Ashkenazi and Moses refused to retract the excommunication of the Shabbatean Nehemiah Hayon, a fierce quarrel broke out between them and the elders of the Portuguese community. In 1714 when Ashkenazi resigned his rabbinical office and left Amsterdam, Moses was compelled to leave with him. He went first to London with Ashkenazi, there continuing the fight against Hayon and his allies, and then to Altona, home of Jacob Emden, Ashkenazis son, where he resumed the struggle against Shabbateanism. Among those he attacked were Michael Abraham Cardoso and even Jonathan Eybeschuetz, and he took the offensive against Moses Hayyim Luzzatto, inducing the rabbis of Venice to excommunicate him. In 1738 Moses returned to Erez Israel and settled in Safed. He died in Beirut and was taken to Sidon for burial. A talmudic scholar of the first rank and a prolific writer, Moses was assisted by a good grounding in secular knowledge and by a command of several foreign languages. In Altona he was friendly with Johann Christopher Wolf, who mentions him in his Bibliotheca Hebraica. His works include Leket ha-Kemah, novellae on the Shulhan Arukh, Orah Hayyim and Yoreh Deah, and Even ha-Ezer; responsa Shetei ha-Lehem; the ethical treatises Zerror ha-Hayyim and Mishnat hakhamim; Elleh ha-Mitzvot, on the numeration of precepts in Maimonides Sefer ha-Mitzvot, on the Oral Law, and on Kabbalah; Sefat Emet; and Parashat Elleh Masei, on the sanctity of the land of Israel.
