DEAD LAGOON: An Aurelio Zen Mystery
N.Y.: Pantheon 1994. First American edition so stated with complete number line beginning with 1. Fine in fine dust jacket not price clipped in protective mylar cover. "Always an erudite crime writer Dibdin places complex characters into exacting plot puzzles that unfold in evocative prose rich in historical and geographic color. In the fifth case the last was Cabal featuring his Italian policeman Aurelio Zen the sleuth leaves Rome for his native Venice to trace the disappearance of a wealthy businessman. While visiting the haunts of his youth and stirring fleeting memories the name of a boyhood friend raises "a host of remembered images. like a flock of disturbed pigeons" Zen meets old men who confuse him with his father who vanished mysteriously long ago. On an island used for mass burials someone thinks he sees a vision and a bag of heroin is misplaced. A new right-wing party is seizing power in the city and Zen has the misfortune to fall for the estranged wife of the party leader. An old friend of his mother's who's convinced that costumed "Swamp-dwellers" are invading her house is far from credible having been long judged unbalanced for a tale she tells of a missing daughter. Zen trails many lost people through twisting generations and winding waterways to face answers to questions he did not ask. Dibdin's mysteries are as nonlinear as the streets and canals of Venice; his prose is literate and seductive." -- PUBLISHERS WEEKLY . First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Book. Pantheon

VENDETTA: An Aurelio Zen Mystery
N.Y.: Doubleday Perfect Crime 1991. First edition December 1991 so stated with complete number line beginning with 1. Some very light soiling at foredge else near Fine in fine dust jacket not price clipped in protective mylar cover. "Corruption in high places underworld skulduggery and a vendetta among mountainfolk are ingredients for murder in this literate suspenseful thriller. An intruder guns down an eccentric Sardinian billionaire his wife and two guests in his seemingly impregnable villa. Enter befuddled Venetian inspector Aurelio Zen last encountered in Dibdin's Ratking. Zen who has a perfunctory love life a half-senile bad-tempered mother and an intuitive faculty sometimes worthy of his name now works for an Italian government ministry in Rome. He's dispatched to Sardinia to get the chief suspect a politician's friend off the hook. Two crazies want Zen rubbed out: a just-released convict whom he'd sent to jail years ago and the killer whose lyrical half-mad ramblings punctuate the narrative--of course the two could be the same person. Spinning a plot as convoluted as Sardinia's winding streets Dibdin illuminates a deeply corrupted society and ultimately vindicates his hero who outmaneuvers the supercops trying to silence him." -- Publishers Weekly . CABAL: An Aurelio Zen Mystery
N.Y.: Doubleday Perfect Crime 1993. First edition so stated with complete number line beginning with 1. Fine in fine dust jacket not price clipped in protective mylar cover. The third entry in the fine Aurelio Zen series. "Emblematic of the many deceptions and misconceptions upon which the latest stylish Aurelio Zen mystery turn are the layered radical fashions of a hot new Italian designer named Falco. Introduced in Ratking Zen is an investigator for Rome's Criminalpol. He is called from the apartment of his mistress Tania Biacis when an Italian aristocrat falls to his death from the observation gallery at the top of St. Peter's Basilica. In the tricky position as liaison between the Vatican Curia and Roman police Zen is willing to confirm the former's explanation that the death was suicide even though his investigation points to murder. But a second killing disguised as an accident and an anonymous letter in the newspapers suggesting the aristocrat's involvement with "a sinister inner coterie" in the Knights of Malta called the Cabal sets him on a different tortuously intricate course. Trying to promote his own interests--in particular holding on to the independent entrepreneurial Tania who wears Falco designs--Zen interprets the mostly unspoken expectations of the Curia and civil authorities in both Rome and Milan where he uncovers the puzzle's solution in an Austro-French palazzo belonging to the heirs of the Falcones a wealthy textile family. The dramatic opening in St. Peter's and its secular echo at the end effectively frame Dibdin's masterful portrayal of the complexities of Zen himself and his ornate bureaucratic milieu in this demanding satisfying novel." -- Publishers Weekly. Dibdin, Michael
BLOOD RAIN: An Aurelio Zen Mystery
N.Y.: Pantheon Books 1999. 2nd printing. Top of text block soiled else about fine in dust jacket. "A Penzler Pick May 2000: Dibdin's six Aurelio Zen novels beginning with Ratking which won the 1988 Golden Dagger Award are as vividly Italian as if this English writer had never strayed far from the Via Veneto despite the fact that he has in fact been expatriated for several years now to the Pacific Northwest. His hero a battle-weary but still morally engaged Roman police investigator is one of the more elegantly vulnerable characters in the genre a figure who resembles Nicolas Freeling's Inspector Van der Valk in his ability to bring triumph to situations and yet never have them seem like victories. Moreover like Van der Valk Zen's greatest talent seems to be for making new enemies among his colleagues. In Blood Rain Zen has been exiled to Sicily under the guise of acting as a sort of watchdog observing a recently reestablished anti-Mafia taskforce. By the nature of the locale--Sicily makes its own rules--the fact that the work of this commission will inevitably be compromised seems clear. But where the cracks in the system will reveal themselves is harder to figure out until of course it's too late. Distracted by his dying mother back in Rome and by the island's perverse feuds and even stranger loyalties and paying not quite enough attention to the professional travails of his beautiful adopted daughter Carla a computer specialist Zen travels his usual idiosyncratic route to a crime's resolution. As always he is most intrigued by the ambiguities of the situation--and is doomed to be the sacrificial scapegoat. Dibdin seems to be incapable of writing a bad book and the Zen novels are his best work. Blood Rain causes the reader to gasp frequently in genuine surprise as well as in admiration for the way Dibdin accomplishes his effects. The intensity of these sensations is something to be grateful for since most books these days even with their ability to shock make us feel so little. --Otto Penzler. 2nd Edition. Hardcover.
