Phillips John
Macedonia: Warlords and Rebels in the Balkans
New Haven CT: Yale University Press 2004 Book. New. Hardcover. 1st.US Edition. "The death of Tito and the disintegration of Yugoslavia in the 1990s shattered the Balkans unleashing all the horror of extreme nationalism. Macedonia seemed to have been spared the blood-letting. In reality it was only postponed Macedonia remains a powder-keg waiting to explode.A bloody rebellion by Albanian guerrillas demanding equal rights to the dominant Slavs in Macedonia has killed and wounded hundreds of people many of them innocent civilians and set off fears that the crisis would suck in surrounding Kosovo Albania Bulgaria and Greece. International intervention brought an uneasy halt to the internecine blood-letting in the summer of 2001 but hardline Macedonian nationalists including some under investigation by the international war crimes tribunal at The Hague have hindered full implementation of the peace agreement signed in August of that year. There are fears that the National Liberation Army will renew its campaign and that this will set the stage for more ethnic cleansing in the heart of Europe. John Phillips has covered both the fighting on the front line in Tetovo and other cities as well as the behind-the-scenes diplomatic intrigue in Skopje. A journalist and historian by training he shows in frightening detail just now dangerous the instability in Macedonia is for any hope of a lasting peace in the Balkans. This book will be vital reading for all those interested in the state of the world today and in the Europe of tomorrow." 230p. bibliography.index. Yale University Press hardcover

Kadare, Ismail
Chronicle in Stone: A Novel Kronike ne Gur
Toronto: Anchor Canada 2007 Book. As New. Soft cover. 1st Canadian Edition. 23.5 x 15.5 cm. Albania that remote unknown land has found its voice in the novels of Kadare. In this one . he takes as his subject the shattering impact of World War II as that cataclysm is lived by a small immensely sensitive boy. After centuries of bondage to the Turks of the Ottoman Empire Albania falls to the invading Italian fascists then the Greeks the Italians again then the Nazi hordes. Amid floods British bombing the action of partisans the boy undergoes another kind of turbulence that of growing up the inner and outer experience ringing strange harmonies. He responds to the beauty of unattainable women to witchcraft literature and later when he is evacuated from his "stone city" to peasant and village life. Now his existence will be "marvelous terrifying and extraordinary." Instead it is primitive barbaric a world where the severed arm of a British airman becomes a talisman and "deflowered" girls disappear possibly murdered by their fathers. Kadare commands a tumultuous whirling scene as he brings his homeland into the literary mainstream.Man Booker International prize 2005. Edited with an introduction by Davis Bellos. 299p. New York: Simon & Schuster 2001 Book. Fine. Hardcover. 1st.US Edition. "a rich colorful and provocative history of the world's most fascinating city in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries when it was at the peak of its glory. This was not the city of decadence carnival and nostalgia familiar to us from later centuries. It was a ruthless imperial city with a shrewd commercial base like ancient Athens which it resembles in its combination of art and sea empire. Winnifrith, T. J.
Nobody's Kingdom :A History of Norhern Albania
Oxford: Signal 2020 Book. New. Hardcover. 1st UK Ed. "The Roman Byzantine and Ottoman Empires foreign invasion communism and tribal conflict: these have been the realities of life in Northern Albania for centuries. In this rich and comprehensive history Tom Winnifrith examines the many different elements that have shaped this independent and little-known region of the Balkans. He explores the fundamental division between the South of Albania and its mysterious romantic North - more feudal more tribal more Catholic and more prone to Austrian and Italian influence. It is also a region less affected by Greece both ancient and modern and by medieval Byzantium or the Orthodox faith. Northern Albania with a terrain and climate much harsher than the south of the country has traditionally had little respect for law and authority while its inhabitants remain in thrall to an ancient honour code. demanding blood feuds and terrible revenge. Nobody's Kingdom traces the history of this ruggedly beautiful region frequently disturbed by both invaders and internal strife yet retaining a distinct national identity and character. From its origins in the ancient kingdom of Illyria and the Roman province of Illyricum through Byzantine and Ottoman rule the granting of Albanian independence in 1912 the rise and fall of communism to its current fragile democracy Northern Albania can be seen as a cultural crossroads - especially remarkable given its mountainous and difficult landscape. This book both scholarly and readable is the first modern comprehensive history of Northern Albania and is a timely and accessible" 232p. map bibliography index. Signal hardcover

Ekspresi I Kosoves : udheim ne kohe lufte = Kosovo Express: travel in time of war
New York: Edicioni Libri 2005 Book. New. Soft cover. First Thus. Translation by'by Xhevat Lloshi into Albanian of "Kosova Express: A Journey in Wartime" In this unique eyewitness record James Pettifer gives a startling and evocative portrayal of the terror and fear in Kosova under the Milosevic regime. As a writer for the London Times he witnessed major events spanning from the emergence of the Kosova Liberation Army in May 1996 to the massive refugee movements of 1998 and 1999. He recorded the ground war between the KLA and the Serbs the NATO bombing campaign and subsequent liberation of Kosova. Pettifer offers new insight into hitherto undisclosed links between several European governments and the Milosovic regime. Pettifer outlines the interplay between the reality on the ground and the perceptions promoted by the international media. He graphically describes the region's bleakly harsh yet beautiful landscapes. Kosova Express evokes the nightmare of Milosevic's police state and illustrates the complexities of the lives of foreign correspondents. 387p.map 5 copies found in WorldCat. Edicioni Libri paperback

Toronto: Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library University of Toronto 2007 Book. Near Fine. Original Wraps. 1st Canadian Edition. Catalogue of an exhibition of books and maps at the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library University of Toronto January 30 to April 27 2007. This exhibition is about travellers and the exhibits are for the most part accounts of their travels. There are few restrictions: the journeys will be to anywhere in the world at any time from the thirteenth to the twentieth centuries. Some of the books and maps were published as recently as this century others were first printed in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The travellers' tales were most often written down by the travellers themselves or perhaps dictated to amanuenses soon after their return. Not all are truthful though most claim to be. One restriction is self-evident: for the journeys to have been recorded at all they must have been at least partly successful. The second restriction is more interesting: each of the explorers and cartographers is Italian and they are all men - for the cultures of the times even into the twentieth century excluded Italian women from such ventures. But these were Italians who though living at the centre of the Mediterranean region with opportunities for trade profit and God's work close by on every side chose to cross the deserts the oceans and the mountains. Suffice to say that they did and the world was changed and they were rewarded. 152p. illustrations include 12 fold-out colour reproductions bibliography.
