After graduating from the Breslau seminary and from the University of Halle
he was engaged as private teacher by Baron Horace Günzburg at Paris. During a residence of two years in that city Gross collected in the Bibliothèque Nationale the material for his work Gallia Judaica. In 1869 he went to Berlin, where he associated much with Leopold Zunz, whose methods of research he admired and adopted. In 1870 he was called to the rabbinate of Gross-Strelitz, Silesia. From 1875 he was rabbi of Augsburg. Gross's activity in the domain of literary history, especially of that of the French Jews of the Middle Ages, was extensive. His Gallia Judaica (Paris, 1897) , which deals with the medieval geography and literary history of the Jews of France, became a standard work. (Wikipedia, 2016) SUBJECT(S) : Jews -- France. Max Grunwald, (1871-1953) rabbi, historian, and folklorist. Born at Hindenburg (now Zabrze, Silesia) , Grunwald served as rabbi in Hamburg (18951903) and Vienna (190535) . He settled in Jerusalem in 1938. Grunwald was a many-sided and productive scholar. Following the example of his father, the founder of the Jewish School of Hamburg, and under the influence of his guardian, the father of Gabriel Riesser, he interested himself early in the affairs of the Jews
He took an active part in the establishment of the Tempelverein, being one of the collaborators in the revision of its prayer-book; and he founded the Verein zur Beförderung Nützlicher Gewerbe Unter den Juden, which he directed from 1823 to 1840, when he became secretary of the congregation of Hamburg. Possessing knowledge of Romance and Germanic languages, and wrote with ease in Hebrew, was an acute and clever critic. Forty of his songs and poems are contained in the hymn-book of the Hamburg congregation. His poem Hagbahah was often ascribed to Gabriel Riesser. In 1907 he left Russia to study philosophy and history at the University of Berlin . That year he was elected as a delegate of Berdichev to the 8th Zionist Congress 8thIn 1939 he emigrated to Israel and settled in Tel Aviv . There he published articles which appeared in most of the worlds Hebrew language newspapers as well as in other sectors of the Jewish press. In addition, published a number of books on Hasidism and Kabbalah. He was awarded the Bialik Prize (Wikipedia, 2016) . From 1918 to his death, Chajes served as the chief rabbi of the Jewish community of Vienna. A nearly complete run of the journal including the editions printed from 1866-1869, 1872-1875, 1877-1922, and 1924-1938 (only missing 14 out of 82) . Some volumes bound separately in a limited run and some include duplicates. The Judisch-Theologischen Seminars, Breslau was the first modern rabbinical seminary in Central Europe. Founded in 1854 with the funds which Jonas Fraenkel, a prominent Breslau businessman, had willed for the purpose, the seminary became the model for similar colleges set up in Europe and the U. S
. The seminarys basic aim was to teach positive historical Judaism. The positive stood for a faithful adherence to the practical precepts of Judaism, while historical permitted free inquiry into the Jewish past, including even Bible criticism, though with some self-imposed limitations (JewishVirtualLibrary.org, 2016) . Every year, the seminary published an annual report with scholarly work by the professors at the seminary, up until the Nazis destroyed the seminary in 1938. Divided into four parts with multiple chapters within each. Includes various charts and blueprints, as well as several glossy black-and-white photographs of Jewish cemeteries and facsimiles of important documents. In Göttingen there is a documented Jewish community dating back to the 16th century. During the Third Reich, the synagogue was destroyed in the Reichsprogromnacht on 9 November 1938, as were many others throughout Germany. Zimmels left Austria for England after the Nazi Anschluss in 1938 and in 1944 was appointed lecturer in Bible, Talmud, and Jewish history at Jews' College London. Jacob Samuel Zuri-Szezak (18841943) , lawyer, authority on Hebrew law, and author. Zuri, who was born in Poland, studied in France and Germany. After immigrating to Palestine after World War I, he lectured for a time at the Jerusalem Law School. In 1927 he moved to Paris and in 1931 to London. Zuri's single scholarly purpose was to introduce into the European study of Greek, Roman, and Islamic law the data of the Jewish legal tradition. He published most of his 31 works in Hebrew, because, as a Zionist, he hoped to lay the foundation for a system of legislation for the coming Jewish state. In his biographical studies and in his analysis of Jewish jurisprudence, Zuri distinguishes between two main currents in rabbinical methodology, the southern, characteristic of Judean scholars, and the northern, of Galilean scholars. These recur in Babylonian Sura and Nehardea-Pumbedita, respectively. Southern methodology seeks for the underlying unity of surface differences. In mishnaic study, a southerner will relate the view of an anonymous Mishnah to the total view held by a tannaitic authority or to an abstract legal principle. Northern methodology concentrates on concrete characteristics of cases and looks for fine individual differences. In mishnaic controversy, the northerner looks for an explanation of difference in the differing circumstances of specific cases. Zuri worked out these principles in, among others, the following works: Rab, sein Leben und seine Anschauungen (1918) ; Rabbi Akiva (Heb. , 1924) ; Rav Ashi (Heb. 1924) ; Tarbut ha-Deromim (1924) ; Toledot Darkhei ha-Limmud (1914) ; Toledot ha-Mishpat ha-Zibburi ha-Ivri (3 vols. 193134) ; and Tarbut ha-Deromim (1924) . Zuri made a substantial contribution to the study of talmudic history and law. Inscribed on title page.
