In a very good condition, fine maps, the large one practically unopened and unused. ~ First edition. Undated but 1911 (OCLC WorldCat), published just a short year after the manoeuvres took place. Rare. Only 3 institutional holdings are located, two of which are in the Netherlands, one at BnF. A blueprint for the use of artillery in WW1. The recently set French doctrine could now be tested in the Picardy manoeuvres of 1910. Two army corps took part, each of five brigades and a cavalry division. The army corps had a new 30-battery artillery establishment. As a side dish, the manoeuvres offered the first large-scale opportunity for pilots to practise alongside ground troops, with 13 aeroplanes (plus four dirigibles) taking part. Percin's book was translated into English by US General Staff as "The artillery at the Picardy Manoeuvres in 1910". General Alexandre Percin (1846-1928).

Handsome device to title-page. Half-title, dedication leaf. Set in double columns. Hardcover, bound in contemporary half calf, spine restored with original gilt-decorated spine laid-down, this bit dried-out and chipped at end, lower joint and head of spine reinforced with matching cloth, corners chafed. Moderate binding but a very good and clean interior, with all the wonderful plates in a very good condition. ~ New edition in its rare 1840 first appearance. The charming plates here are coloured by contemporary hand with rich, dense dyes, and are delicately heightened with fine touches of shellac, adding richness and elegance to the darker tones. Joachim Marie Jean Jacques Alexandre Jules Ambert (1804-1890), son of a General, became a soldier himself, serving from 1824 until 1870, rising to become a Dragoon officer, later a General of the Cavalry. Plus contemporary hand-coloured frontispiece and 30 other contemporary hand-coloured plates (31 in total). Set in Gothic type. Hardcover, bound in handsome three-quarters calf and light-purple marbled boards, spine with raised band between compartments, richly decorated in gilt; corner-tips chafed, bit spotted in places. A lovely copy in a very good condition, fine plates. ~ With a beautiful set of hand-coloured costume plates, exquisitely produced. The plates, by E. Kretzschmar after Adolph Menzel, are the result of a complicated and delicate process, now obsolete, which was invented in the early 1850's by Firmin Gillot. Known as Gillotage, the process turned a lithographic drawing into a relief plate. Employing both planographic and relief methods, the process remained purely manual, involving no photography. The lithograph was transferred to zinc and then etched, in an extremely laborious process, to make a metal relief block from which the final print was made. Noteworthily, many of Daumier's lithographic plates were treated in this way before their publication. Here, the plates are delicately hand-coloured by contemporary hand, rich in detail, and in fine condition, totally free of foxing.
