‎Koln, Snoeck, 2007 Bound, brown cloth, 79pp., 22.5x32.5cm., illustr. troughout in col. Text in German and English. ISBN 9783936859829.‎

‎When you open a newspaper nowadays and let those major geopolitical discussions into your life it is indeed possible to be overcome by a kind of nervous laughter. There are plenty of appetisers, which is to be? The crisis in Irak, Iran, Afghanistan, North Korea, Palestine, Burma, Dafur, Kosovo, Chechnya ... nnWe seem to be repeatedly and increasingly afraid that the sky is going to fall on our heads, and the current American president (not to mention his entire administration) is not alone in his quandary as to the why and wherefore. Thus the new world order staggers blithely from one headline to the next: ever at the thick of it with his ?quirky eye? - Horst M?nch. The small screen and to a greater extent the larger ones also are already in the business of distorting our view of every conceivable problem concerning the map. Where they could actually explain something, but ... should they do so in the first place? Isn't Berlin supposed to be here? No, that must be China! I can clearly recognize Russia, but why does Europe begin there? The conversations in front of the images are the same.nnEverything begins here and ends there, which is precisely what connects it. The demarcation of the USA along its own borders seems to be just as provisional as the border of Irak‎

‎An exhibition catalog of a show focusing on four artists represented in Switzerland s Hauser & Wirth Collection, Isa Genzken, Richard Jackson, Roman Signer and Diana Thater. What are these artists doing together? Despite their various American or European backgrounds, the varied media and lines of inquiry, their works share one formal motif - a circle, circular pattern or rotating movement. Whether this movement is real or implied, possible, inherent in the work or performed by the viewer in space, it s there and brings together this fascinating group of installational works. Perspectives are lost only to be rediscovered, presenting themselves anew and in multiplied form. An exciting collection of work including video, sculpture, painting and photography. Contributions by Michaela Unterdorfer, Karolin Kober, Sabine Sarwa, Fritz Emslander and Barbara Wagner.‎

‎, Kerber Christof Verlag, 2003 Hardcover, 192 pages. Illustrated. fine condition.132 colored illustrations, 245 x 175 x 20 mm, ISBN 3936646422.‎

‎Controversy over Integralism in Germany, Italy and France during the Pontificate of Pius X (1903-1914)‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Paperback, 184 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language(s):English, French. ISBN 9782503604909.‎

‎In the years after 1900 the autonomous activity of the Catholic laity in politics, culture and society was opposed by 'integralists' in theological circles, in the laity as well as in the clergy, and last but not least in the Roman Curia. The integralists favoured a strict confessionalism and hierarchical control over all fields of Catholic life. Pope Pius X enforced this position in Italy and in France by solemnly condemning the autonomist Christian Democracy of Romolo Murri and the ?Sillon? movement of Marc Sangnier. In Germany, however, compromises with the Roman authorities were possible on all fields of contention: concerning the interdenominational character of the Christian trade unions, the independence of the Centre Party from the hierarchy and also during the controversy over the ?Catholic belles-lettres?. Finally, in the papal encyclical 'Singulari quadam' (1912) the interconfessional Christian trade unions were at least ?tolerated?. The present volume analyses these struggles in a comparative perspective and, by evaluating the entire accessible archival documentation, it reconstructs for the first time the respective internal decision-making processes of the Roman Curia. The result of this entire research is a profiling of three important European Catholicisms in the controversy over integralism. This conflict had a decisive bearing on the long-term positioning of French, German and Italian Catholicism within their respective national societies.‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Paperback, 268 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:45 b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503595948.‎

‎Summary Starting from a political reality, which is, at the same time, artistic and cultural, the book Ars Hasburgica aims to review the still so common historiographical conception of the Renaissance that conceives this period from a geographically Italocentric, artistically classicist and politically centered the idea of "national" arts and schools. But Renaissance is a more global and complex phenomenon. What this book aims to offer is an idea of the art of that period that considers the role played by the Habsburg dynasty and its various courts in this period, trying to verify whether, by applying other historiographic models, and having the art of the Casa de Austria as a focus, traditional ideas can continue to be maintained well into the twenty-first century. We refer to the so-called "Vasari paradigm", on which art history of the sixteenth century has largely been built over the last centuries. It is also intended to structure concepts about the art of the period not so much around nationalist considerations and identities of the arts, but to raise these issues throughout ideas such as that of the court as a political, artistic and cultural sphere, in the wake of the classical studies by Norbert Elias, Amedeo Quondam or Carlo Ossola.

‎, Brepols, 2023 Hardback, 432 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:30 b/w, 21 col., 16 tables b/w., 5 maps b/w, Language: German. ISBN 9782503598901.‎

‎Summary This book offers a study of the scientific landscape of medieval Bavaria during the higher Middle Ages. Based on manuscripts as well as medieval library catalogues, it tries to quantify the so-called 'Discovery of Nature' and tries to analyse it from the perspective of a monastic landscape in which the arrival of the astrolab in the 11th century marked a significant turning point. By introducing new methods and questions into the traditional body of Carolingian astronomy, monastic scholars of this area played a decisive, albeit neglected, role in the development of medieval astronomy. The book reconstructs the studies of the monk Wilhelm von Hirsau who tackled some of the most urgent problems of astronomy of his time: correcting the dates of the solstices and finding latitude. These studies are then placed in the broader development of medieval science, particularly focusing on his sphaera, an instrument that has often been wrongly understood as a teaching device. In contrast, the present study argues that this instrument is not only William's lost astronomical clock, but also the first example for stationary observational astronomy in medieval Europe as well as an important milestone towards the empirical astronomy of future centuries. ‎Summary Around 1600, a new style of sculpture started to evolve and flourish in Central Europe and in the German-speaking lands. Dramatic wood and stone figures peopled the palaces, gardens and churches of Munich, Berlin, Dresden, D sseldorf, Vienna and Prague. These great works of art are little known outside Germany and Austria, partly because their colour and vivacity are so astoundingly different from the sculpture that was being produced in Italy, France and elsewhere in Northern Europe at that time. They are overpowering, and amongst the greatest works of art produced in Europe in the seventeenth century. This groundbreaking book explores their history and conveys their visual power. ‎Summary Henry of Rheinfelden, a Dominican from Basel, spent the last decade of the fourteenth century at the University of Vienna studying theology. During this time he took notes on the academic activities of the first rectors of the university and deans of the Faculties of Arts and Theology. This volume explores Rheinfelden's contribution to our understanding of the doctrinal, curricular, administrative, and prosopographical history of the early University of Vienna. Deciphering Rheinfelden's surviving notebooks in the Universit tsbibliothek Basel sheds new light on the rise of an academic elite in Vienna. His manuscripts reveal a network of scholars sharing a passion for knowledge and supply a gallery of intellectual profiles, starting with the mentors of the group, Henry of Langenstein and Henry Totting of Oyta, and continuing with the lesser-known figures Stephen of Enzersdorf, Gerhard Vischpekch of Osnabr ck, Paul (Fabri) of Geldern, Andreas of Langenstein, Rutger Dole of Roermond, Nicholas of H nhartzkirchen, Nicholas of Dinkelsb hl, John Berwart of Villingen, John Stadel of Russbach, Peter de Treysa, Michael Suchenschatz of Hausleiten, Peter Schad of Walse, Thomas of Cleves, and Leonhard of Dorffen. The papers gathered in this volume highlight the intricate relationship between a commitment to administrative duty and an appetite for the creation of a doctrinal tradition via debating, forging arguments, defending and attacking positions, commenting on authorities, and adopting and adapting academic practices imported from Paris, since the majority of the authors in our gallery were educated in Paris and built their careers in Vienna. Through Rheinfelden's notebooks, this volume provides access to unique and previously unknown texts that together offer a new image of the medieval University of Vienna. ‎Summary Riemenschneider in Situ presents the newest research on the work of one of the most famous late medieval and early Renaissance sculptors, Tilman Riemenschneider. Moving beyond questions of style, date, and workshop practice, this volume investigates the sculptor's programs across the south German region of Franconia that survive in situ, within the particular contexts for which they were designed and in which they were originally experienced. In shifting the focus from fragmentary pieces in museum collections to extant installations in their original church settings, the volume contributes to a wave of scholarship interested in reanimating medieval artistic ensembles by considering them as complex visual environments. Together, the authors?conservators, museum professionals, and art historians?provide an essential and overdue study of Riemenschneider's best-preserved pieces, while also making an important, collaborative addition to the broader discipline of pre-modern art history. ‎Learning to be Noble in the Middle Ages. Moral Education in North-Western Europe‎

‎, Brepols, 2022 Hardback, 295 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:4 b/w, 5 col., Language(s):English, Old French, Middle High German. ISBN 9782503595009.‎

‎Summary This book explores for the first time the moral education of the Western European nobility in the high Middle Ages. The medieval nobility created and utilized values and ideals such as chivalry and courtliness to legitimize their exalted position in society, and these values were largely the same across Europe. Noble codes of conduct communicated these ideals in everyday interactions and symbolic acts at court that formed the basis of European courtly society. This book asks how noble men and women were taught about morality and good conduct and how the values of their society were disseminated. While a major part of moral education took place in person, this period also produced a growing corpus of writing on the subject, in both Latin and the vernacular languages, addressing audiences that encompassed the lay elites from kings to the knightly class, men as well as women. Participation in this teaching became a distinguishing feature of the nobility, who actively promoted their moral superiority through their self-fashioning as they evolved into a social class. This book brings together analyses of several major European didactic texts and miscellanies, examining the way nobles learned about norms and values. Investigating the didactic writings of the Middle Ages helps us to better understand the role of moral education in the formation of class, gender, and social identities, and its long-term contribution to a shared European aristocratic culture. ‎Summary The volume with a joint introductory chapter is in the first part devoted to Humanists publishing in the circle of the university of Leipzig at the turn of the 15th century: Paulus Niavis / Schneevogel (ca. 1453-1517) and Ioannes Honorius Cubitensis (ca. 1465-1504). The second part includes the translation work of ?eho? Hrub of Jelen (ca. 1460-1514), mostly preserved in manuscript, the first translation from Ancient Greek into Czech by V clav P seck (ca. 1482-1511), and a remarkable edition of Martianus Capella's work De nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii prepared by Ioannes Dubravius (ca. 1486-1553). The volume covers a relatively short period beginning in 1488, when the editions of Niavis and Honorius are first documented in Leipzig, and ending with 1516, when Dubravius's edition of Martianus Capella was published in Vienna. ‎Court Festivals of the Holy Roman Empire, 1555-1619. Performing German Identity‎

‎, Brepols, 2020 Hardback, 267 pages, Size:178 x 254 mm, Illustrations:13 b/w, 4 col., Language: English. *NEW ISBN 9782503583297.‎

‎Summary This study represents a new approach to the analysis of early modern court festivals, setting the question of identity at its heart. It explores identity as it was portrayed, constructed, and upheld through court festivals within the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation in the period between the Peace of Augsburg in 1555 and the coronation of Friedrich V, Elector Palatine, as King of Bohemia in 1619. Structured thematically, this detailed analysis touches on core themes of early modern European history including state formation, princely courts, gender, religion, science and the natural world, and cultural encounters. In doing so, it draws on, and speaks to, scholarly literature not only from different historical sub-disciplines but also from sociology and anthropology. Ultimately, Morris argues that these court festivals provided a flexible, albeit contested, rhetoric of identity, grounded in the performance of humanist virtue. Through the performed, material, and literary rhetoric of court festivals, the concept of nobility through virtue was reworked, refined, and given a new vocabulary within the German context. This was inextricably linked with politics in light of the reforms made to the Holy Roman Empire at the end of the fifteenth century, the confessional divisions of the sixteenth century, and the mounting tensions of the early seventeenth century which were to culminate in the Thirty Years War. ‎Women's History in the Age of Reformation. Johannes Meyer's Chronicle of the Dominican Observance‎

‎, Brepols, 2019 Paperback, approx. x + 306 pages, Size:152 x 229 mm, Illustrations:2 maps b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9780888443083.‎

‎Summary In his work The Book of the Reformation of the Order of Preachers, the Dominican friar Johannes Meyer (1422-1485) drew on letters, treatises, and other written records, as well as interviews, oral accounts, and his own personal experience, to record the blossoming of the Observant reform movement. The result is this sprawling, eclectic, yet curiously intimate account of the men - but mostly of the women - who devoted their lives to revitalizing the Dominican order in southern Germany. With his reliance on their accounts and archives and respect for their intellectual abilities and spiritual resolve, Meyer's treatment of medieval Dominican women provides a model from which today's historians stand to learn. The introduction contextualizes Meyer's celebratory work within a more objective historical background; it is followed by a full translation, making this remarkable history available to English-speaking readers for the first time.‎

‎On the Artistic Representation of Industrial Disputes in the Shadow of Repression in European Art From 1870 to 1914 and Beyond‎

‎, Springer Books, 2025 hardcover 210 pages, 15 b/w illustrations, 99 illustrations in colour. English, *new. ISBN 9783031636332.‎

‎This book is the first volume on the artistic representation of industrial disputes in European art (from 1870 to 1914) since the catalogue of the landmark exhibition Streik, Realit t und Mythos, organized by the Deutsches Historisches Museum (1992). It has been written by a group of scholars who share a keen interest in social history and the history of art, as well as in-depth knowledge of industrial relations and collective labour law. Seeking to transcend a purely western European perspective, the book offers unprecedented insights into artistic production in Poland and Hungary from the 19th century to the communist era. It even goes beyond the European continent, examining the United States and Mexico. The media explored include painting, sculpture, the graphic arts and photography. Further, the book deals with artists great (Carlo Carr , Walter Crane, James Ensor, Juan Gris, K the Kollwitz, Constantin Meunier,Mih ly Munk csy, Th ophile-Alexandre Steinlen and Jan Toorop) and small, sometimes even anonymous. The artistic styles range from (social) realism, naturalism and neo-impressionism to futurism and socialist realism. All stages of industrial disputes (from the causes of strikes to their violent suppression) are subjected to iconographical and iconological analysis, combined with perspectives from visual studies, critical art and gender studies. Agricultural workers, miners, construction workers and textile workers fill the scenes. Most of them are subordinate workers; others are (bogus) independent workers and migrant workers. Given its scope, the book will be of interest to (art) historians, labour law scholars, and specialists in industrial relations.‎

‎Kabbalah from Medieval Ashkenaz and Renaissance Christian Theology Eleazar of Worms (c. 1165c. 1238) and Egidio da Viterbo (c. 1469- 1532)‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2025 Hardback, Pages: 223 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language(s):English. ISBN 9782503618449.‎

‎summary The preoccupation of Christian theologians and scholars with the Hebrew language and sources at the dawn of the sixteenth century resulted in the transfer of a vast corpus of medieval Hebrew texts into Christian intellectual discourse and networks. These Hebrew sources were meticulously collected, copied, translated, and subjected to rigorous study. These collections include texts that originate from medieval Ashkenaz, the majority of which can be attributed to Eleazar ben Yehuda of Worms (c. 1165?c. 1238). Rabbi Eleazar was a prominent Jewish scholar of his time and a member of one of the most prestigious families in Jewish communities of the German Rhineland and Palatinate. However, the history of medieval Ashkenazic writings has been neglected in scholarship, which has favoured other Jewish (primarily Sephardic) sources in tracing the influence of medieval Jewish mysticism on Christian theology and Kabbalah. This book takes the hitherto disregarded Ashkenazi Hebrew sources as its point of departure. It focuses on the work of Eleazar as a main representative of the ?aside Ashkenaz, and on his magnum opus Sode Razayya, which discusses all matter of the divine and the mundane sphere. The book explores how Eleazar?s work was a potentially interesting source for a Renaissance Christian Kabbalist like Egidio (Giles) da Viterbo. Kabbalah from Ashkenaz is distinguished by its emphasis on the Hebrew letters and language, along with the divine word and divine speech (dibur). This central motif of the Ashkenazi sources found resonance with certain Christian theologians and Kabbalists in the context of Christian logos theology, which is similarly anchored in the divine word (verbum). This book thus challenges scholarly traditions about ?Jewish mysticism? and the sources of humanist Hebraism. It demonstrates how Christian Kabbalah enables a new perspective on Ashkenazi sources, and equally how Ashkenazi sources help to illuminate Renaissance Christian theology. ‎Summary The wealth of medieval art found in Germany's Protestant churches is unparalleled; contrary to what is generally believed, Lutherans were often tolerant to medieval church interiors, maintaining or altering the use of furnishings and images or simply accepting them as neutral things (adiaphora) and as objects of tradition. In consequence, it is the country?s Lutheran churches that offer the most insight into what churches looked like before the Reformation, not only in Germany but even across the Latin West. This book, illustrated with over 500 colour photographs by the author, visually explores Germany?s best medieval church interiors. A presentation of twenty-five outstanding examples is followed by analysis of the primary factors in the survival of medieval art through five centuries of Protestantism. Then, ten thematic chapters discuss the most important furnishings, including altars and their decorations, tabernacles, stalls and benches, screens, pulpits, sculptures, and baptismal fonts. ‎Summary In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the city councils of Hanseatic towns participated lively in the Northern European landscape of diplomacy. Often, it was conflict which lay behind the magistrates' diplomatic activities. Discord among the members of the Hanse, intercity disputes between individual burghers, and large-scale "international" altercations, all required town councils to engage with actors and institutions beyond the town walls. 'Councils, conflicts, correspondence' examines how the magistrates of the Hanseatic towns L beck and Reval managed such conflicts which often exceeded the formal limits of their own jurisdiction and authority. Through a comparative study of two towns with markedly different access to political power and networks, this book analyses the scope of diplomatic action available to city councils. By placing the diplomacy of municipal governments in the broader frame of European urban political thought and practice, it shows how magistrates combined a flexible conception of the common good with a pragmatic notion of reciprocity to balance their relations to their own citizenry and overlords, as well as to the Hanse and foreign rulers. Furthermore, this book zooms in on practices of diplomacy and processes of negotiation, uncovering the variety of strategies and tactics employed by the councils and their diplomats in written correspondence as well as face-to-face meetings at regional and Hanseatic diets. ‎, Brepols, 2026 Hardback, Pages: 172, Size:178 x 254 mm, Illustrations:3 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9782503614397.‎

‎Summary An interdisciplinary book uniquely combining methods and concepts of history, sociology and literary science. The monograph explores the normative idea of a premodern city as it should be, namely as the ideal(ized) community, politically autonomous entity based upon republican values with its own mythology and also as a strictly symmetrical place being the distinctive feature of the rational human civilisation. Though expressed in numerous urban rituals, symbolical acts, public festivities and urban architecture, the normative concept of the city was above all embedded in written and printed sources. The book's findings are based upon a spectrum of narrative sources involving urban chronicles, political treatises, panegyrics, family memoirs, descriptions of cities, instructions summarizing principles of good governance, and also the literary genre of utopia. All of them referred to the normative image of a premodern urban community by highlighting the idealized and therefore largely imagined principles of urban republicanism. By covering the period 1450-1800, the monograph explores also the gradual collapse of idealized premodern communities and the rise of modern urban societies. Geographically, research has focused upon cities and towns in peripheries that have been traditionally ignored by the mainstream urban history. The largely "unknown urban Europe" comprises the Bohemian Lands, Polish-Lithuania and Hungary with significant overlaps to German Lands and Austria. ‎Summary This collection of essays is the first to focus exclusively on the Wittelsbach court of Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria (1493-1550). The contributors argue for a deeper understanding of this duke's reign and acknowledge his crucial role in shaping the religious and cultural identity of the Duchy of Bavaria. By providing insights into the duke's cultural aspirations, the organisation of the court, musical sources, religious musical practice, and everyday working life, this book aims to: (1) situate the court of Wilhelm IV in the context of the religious and political upheavals of the early sixteenth century; (2) trace the development of the musical repertoire and personnel of the Bavarian court chapel between 1500 and 1550; and (3) critically assess the degree to which the Munich court could be considered 'modern' by re-evaluating the broader cultural, religious, and musical life of the court around 1520. The volume thus sheds light on the cultural ambitions of a duke who defined music and art as expressions of strategic elements that interwove tradition, devotion, and representation in a programme of governance based on humanist education-a duke whose foresight enabled the Munich court to quickly become one of the most prestigious and famous seats of power in the Holy Roman Empire.
