8vo, br. ed. pp.237. Pochi personaggi storici, scriveva nel 1901 il bizantinista Charles Diehl, sono più difficili da giudicare dell'imperatore Giustiniano. Si può dire nello stesso tempo di lui assai bene e assai male e per giustificare il male come il bene le prove sembrano moltiplicarsi. Lo storico moderno è forse meno sensibile alle sue categorie morali, ma quanto afferma è indubbiamente vero. Se però è difficile giudicare Giustiniano, ancor più lo è con la moglie Teodora e ciò per due buoni motivi. Il primo è che Teodora imperatrice è assai diversa dalla giovane attrice che aveva condotto una vita sregolata a Costantinopoli, quasi come si trattasse di due persone diverse, anche se la storia annovera altri casi del genere. Il secondo, di ordine tecnico, consiste nel fatto che l'informazione sulla sua attività è piuttosto carente e fortemente contraddittoria. Quella poi che dovrebbe essere la fonte principale, la 'Storia segreta' di Procopio di Cesarea, sembra per molti storici presentare un quadro distorto della realtà dovuto all'odio viscerale che aveva l'autore per lei." In questa prospettiva Omero è altra cosa rispetto a quello che la tradizione ci ha consegnato: dal volume di Maiullari emerge infatti un poeta ironico, parodistico, forse "pacifista" e antigreco

L'esercito romano, guidato dai due consoli Lucio Emilio Paolo e Gaio Terenzio Varrone, si scontrò con quello cartaginese, comandato da Annibale, nella sanguinosa battaglia di Canne, uno dei fatti d'armi più famosi nella storia. Fu una catastrofe militare senza precedenti, le cui dimensioni, dopo ventidue secoli, non finiscono di stupire e sgomentare: secondo molti storia, il numero delle vittime fu pari a quello provocato dalle bombe atomiche di Hiroshima e Nagasaki, ma alcuni studiosi sostengono che fu molto più alto. Eppure a Canne non c'erano armi da fuoco, nessun grosso calibro di artiglieria e, naturalmente, non c'erano gli aerei. Si combattè con dardi, pietre e giavellotti, armi bianche e primitive, zoccoli di cavalli, calci e morsi. L'esercito di Annibale riuscì a neutralizzare e ad annientare la potente macchina militare romana, dando ai suoi avversari uno scacco matto in tre mosse: sgominando la cavalleria, facendo flettere al centro le proprie fanterie, accerchiando il nemico. Quella di Canne è la battaglia più studiata dai generali e dagli esperti di storia militare perché rappresenta lo scontro campale per eccellenza, l'apoteosi della scaltrezza e della duttilità di manovra di un esercito in guerra e il suo fascino grandioso e sinistro continua ancora oggi a suscitare interesse nei lettori.
