NICOLSON nee Cory Adela Florence pseud. Laurence Hope:
Stars of the Desert.
London: William Heinemann. New York: John Lane 1903. 8vo 214 x 138 mms. unnumbered pp. viii 151 152 text with colophon reading "Printed by Ballantyne Hanson & Co. London & Edinburgh" including half-title uncut many leaves unopened errata slip pasted to lower margin of page 1 original grey boards with cream-coloured spine with paper label slightly soiled and inscribed by author on recto of front free end-paper "Aunt Lucy from Violet Xmas 1903." Adela Florence Nicolson 18651904 published under the pseudonym Laurence Hope though to friends and her husband she was "Violet." Stars of the Desert was Laurence Hope's second book of poetry and was first published in 1903. It was the last book by Hope to appear before her death. The inscription is dated to December 1903 and she committed suicide about ten months later in October 1904. Her third book published as Indian Love in Britain and as Last Poems in the United States appeared posthumously in 1905. Curiously ODNB doesn't mention that Hope was known as "Violet" by her family and many friends. Inscribed copies of her works seem uncommon. OCLC locates copies in NHS and TCD. London: William Heinemann. New York: John Lane, 1903 hardcover

NIGHTINGALE FLORENCE to Elizabeth Blackwell
Autograph letter signed to Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell
<p>2 ½ pages envelope addressed in Nightingale's hand to Blackwell in London redirected to Cornwall marked 'Private."
Original folds. Very good condition.</p><p><b>This splendid letter connects two of the most influential women of the nineteenth century Florence Nightingale and Elizabeth Blackwell.</b></p><p>"The achievements of Florence Nightingale the founder of modern nursing and Elizabeth Blackwell America's first female physician have been counted among the initial breakthroughs of the women's cause in England and the United States" Lois Monteiro "On Separate Roads: Florence Nightingale and Elizabeth Blackwell" <i>Signs</i> Spring 1984.</p><p>The two women first met in 1850 when Blackwell was studying at St. Bartholomew's in London after completing her medical courses in New York making her the first American female physician. She became the first woman on the British medical register and made England her home. Similarly Nightingale was about to begin her nursing studies in the summer of 1851.</p><p>Over the coming years the two revolutionized medicine for women and played crucial roles in social reform. By the end of the decade Nightingale as a result of her heroic efforts during the Crimean War her nursing reforms and her seminal book <i>Notes on Nursing</i> was among the most celebrated women in England. In this letter Nightingale writes to her old friend</p><p>"Nothing that you do independently of our being old friends can fail to interest me. I wish you 'God speed' on all that you undertake. To bring the people the little as well as the big to observe the 'Laws of Life' the title of Blackwell's first book is indeed the only way of doing the least good the first business of every body.</p><p>"But I am not sure that I could aid in doing this in the way you point out. Sanitary work of this kind can only be done by going personal grappling with the evils by going personally among those for whom it is to be done – going for instance into all the back slums of London & other towns – practically learning & teaching there what constitutes the health of dwellings the health of children the health of populations of occupations &c. In such a work alas! I who am a prisoner to bed can take no part …"</p><p><b>This outstanding letter on medicine health and social reform linking two towering figures of the nineteenth century is worthy of the finest collections.</b></p><br /> No place, [August 2], 1871

N.p. 1881. 2 pp. 8vo. Bifolium. Old folds fine. With original transmittal envelope addressed and signed in holograph by the author. 2 pp. 8vo. To the mother of Emily Parson Civil War nurse. Legendary pioneering nurse Florence Nightingale 1820-1910 writes to the mother of an American nursing pioneer Emily Elizabeth Parsons a year after her death. In part: "I have received your kind note and the book containing some of your dear daughter's Hospital letters which touches me greatly & from which I am sure I shall derive much interest & advantage. Her labours will not have been in vain. I thank God for such a woman. He will prosper the work she left & will establish the Hospital she instituted in your Cambridge." The valediction reads "Always under the severe pressure of overwork & illness but always the work's faithful servant I give you joy." Parsons 1824-1880 excelled in a number of challenging posts at military hospitals during the Civil War including Lawson Hospital in St. Louis from which she headed an expedition of nurses down the Mississippi on a steamer to retrieve men wounded in the siege of Vicksburg. In 1867 she founded Cambridge Hospital later re-established as Mt. Auburn Hospital and lived there as "matron and nurse." Her Memoir to which Nightingale refers in the letter is comprised mainly of her wartime letters and appeared in the year of her death. An exceptional assocation. unknown

Ever Yours Florence Nightingale : Selected Letters
Cambridge Massachusetts: Harvard University Press 1990. Bright clean square tight unmarked copy. Sharp corners. Not a book club edition. Not price clipped 29.95. No owner's name or bookplate. No remainder mark. A few illustrations. Introduction and revealing notes by the editors. An intimate look at the "savior of the British soldier" who relentlessly campaigned for reforms in professional nursing medical education and hospitals. She was major force in the improvement of housing food and sanitation for the armed forces throughout the empire especially in the Crimea and India. From the Dust Jacket: "For many Florence Nightingale is the most famous woman of her day second only perhaps to Queen Victoria. Celebrated and beloved by the public and her friends considered an irritant by politicians and bureaucrats the great reformer remains a figure of considerable controversy. In this full 'life in letters' we see her at first hand. Martha Vicinus and Bea Nergaard weave together a narrative account and a selection of her letters in such a way as to create - in Nightingale's own words - a fascinating portrayal of the woman her career and her concerns. These letters are wonderfully revealing. Had Nightingale not been a reformer she might have been a writer with a sure style and acerbic wit. Her letters bring to light conflicting views on women. One also sees her own personal relations and conflicts including a painful relationship with her mother an sister." Glossary of Nightingale's Major Correspondents. Selected bibliography of writings by and about her. Index. Original maroon cloth. First Printing of the First Edition. Hardcover. Fine condition/Near Fine dust jacket. 8vo. xii 461pp . Ever Yours Florence Nightingale: Selected Letters
Cambridge MA: Harvard University Press. Very Good in Very Good dust wrapper. 1990. First US Edition. Hardcover. ISBN: 0674270207. 461 pages; Burgundy cloth boards clean and bright bumped spine ends; book looks unread. Dust wrapper not price clipped faintly rubbed and edgeworn with one short closed tear. A very nice copy. ; <b>'For many Florence Nightingale is the most famous woman of her day second only perhaps to Queen Victoria. Celebrated and beloved by the public and her friends considered an irritant by politicians and bureaucrats the great reformer remains a figure of considerable controversy. In this full 'life in letters' we see her at first hand. Martha Vicinus and Bea Nergaard weave together a narrative account and a selection of her letters in such a way as to create--in Nightingale's own words--a fascinating portrayal of the woman her career and her concerns.'</b>. Catalogs: Memoir. Keywords: Nurse Nightingale British History Correspondence Nursing. Harvard University Press hardcover

"Cecil Blanche Woodham-Smith was a British historian and biographer. She wrote four popular history books each dealing with a different aspect of the Victorian era. … Her first book as a historian a biography of Florence Nightingale published in 1950 took her straight to the top of her profession. Her meticulous research had taken nine years and the book succeeded in restoring Nightingale's reputation which had dwindled following Lytton Strachey's representation of her in Eminent Victorians.
