Florence Perry to Frank Perry
A WIFE SENDS MAIL TO HER CIVILAN HUSBAND WHO AFTER BEING SHOT IN THE BACK AND PARALYZED DURING THE INVASION OF GUAM WAS IMPRISONED IN A JAPANESE POW CAMP; Mail sent to Mr. Frank Perry at a Japanese prison camp by his wife in San Francisco
This legal-size envelope is addressed to "Frank Perry American Civilian Internee Held by Japan / in Zentsuzi War Prison Camp / Zentsuzi Skikoku Island Japan / Via: New York N.Y." The return address on reverse is "Mrs. Florence E. Perry 77 Carmelita St. / San Francisco California". It is franked with a pair of 3-cent Presidential Jefferson horizontal- coil stamps Scott #842 canceled with a New York city machine postmark dated 17 March 1945. U.S "Examined By" censor tape with purple text reading "11877 / U.S. Censor" has resealed the left edge of the envelope. A Japanese blue censor handstamp with three Japanese characters reading Ken'etsuzmi censored and an addition orange-red oval Wada censor mark are applied below the address. No contents; envelope only.

Perry was an American civilian radio operator who worked on Guam at the time of the Japanese invasion which began on 8 December the day after the infamous sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. During the assault Perry was shot in the back by Japanese solders and paralyzed from the waist down. After being treated at the captured American Naval Hospital on Guam Perry was shipped to the Zenstsuji Prison Group complex near Hiroshima and survived the war.

A photostatic copy of a reference document accompanying this envelope states that "This item was bought from Tom Jackson. It was given to him in the camp in Japan." Jackson was a former British airman who had been captured on Java and imprisoned at Zentsuji Sub Camp No. 2 Innoshima Island.

At their peak the Zentsuji camps held about 5500 British Australian and American prisoners during the war. Little has been published in English about them however the Gibbs Report stated that prisoners worked as laborers in nearby shipbuilding facilities. For more information see Mansell's Capture: The Forgotten Men of Guam Niiyama's "British POW Leaves Diary. . . at The Chugoku Shimbun Hiroshima Peace Media Center online Center for Research: Allied POWs Under the Japanese: Zensuji Camp Shikuko 1942-1945 and Hiroshima POW Camp #5-B Innoshima Department of the Army All -Japan POW Camp Group History and Gruenzner's Postal History of American POWs. . . .

Quite a scarce item documenting the imprisonment of a paralyzed American civilian in a Japanese prisoner of war camp. books

Harper Florence
Manuscript Master-pieces of Prose Collected and Bound into A Book with Original Decorations
1915-6. Very Good. Seventeen decorated leaves with intricate hand-colored border illustrations on all of them. Included are a title page a table of contents twelve leaves with a mixture of verse and prose apercus by Cowper Marcus Aurelius Maeterlinck Chesterton Jefferies and a few lesser known writers then three leaves with borders but blanks within. These borders stand out for their variety and the panache of their execution. While a few may owe a debt to work done before such as that by Beardsley or Parrish Ms. Harper also seems to anticipate high Art Deco style and even later aesthetics than that. Ms. Harper mixes cleverly the geometric the abstract the figurative the natural. The pleasure to be derived from these borders is that from miniatures -- splashy color plates these are not! Further there is nothing corny sentimental or pedestrian about the illustrations which usher us into the little worlds of Ms. Harper's imagination. The text is also hand-written and while not calligraphic it is uniform neat and attractive.

books

MARCH FREDRIC FLORENCE ELDRIDGE RUSSELL W. DAVENPORT
My Country - A Poem of American - By Russell W. Davenport
New York: Simon & Schuster 1944. Two copies of this book one belonging to Fredric March and the other to his wife Florence Eldridge. The poem was written during World War II and was presented in adapted dramatic form several times over the NBC radio network. The copy belonging to Fredric March is a second printing and is signed by him in pencil on the flyleaf - Fredric March November 1944. With some pencil notes by him referring to the text. At a later date the author has inscribed the book to his friend - For Fred March - Concerning whose reading of this poem words fail me - Russell Davenport. On the death of President Franklin Roosevelt in April 1945 the NBC Radio Network had March give a dramatic reading of the poem as part of its tribute to the fallen wartime President. The first printing copy belonging to Florence Eldridge is heavily annotated by her in pencil for an earlier radio reading in which she acted. Her copy is a first printing and inscribed by the author - For Florence Affectionately Russell Nov 30 / 44 And don’t for Dec 11!. There is an Autograph Letter Signed by Russell Davenport to Eldridge taped to the front pastedown tape browned dated December 12 1944 written after her radio reading - Dear Florence- This is just a little note wholly inadequate to express my appreciation for all your effort and care in the reading of My Country. You gave a superb performance. If there is ever anything that an unlikely scrivener can do in return you know where to come. Let me see you soon. Affectionately Russ. Both books are enclosed together in a custom clamshell box. Russell Davenport 1899-1954 was a very interesting man and close friend of the Marchs. As Wikipedia notes he “.served with the U.S. Army in World War I and received the Croix de Guerre. He enrolled at Yale University and graduated in 1923 where he was classmate of Henry Luce and Briton Hadden who founded Time magazine. While at Yale he became a member of the secret society Skull and Bones. In 1929 he married the writer Marcia Davenport; they divorced in 1944. He joined the editorial staff of Fortune magazine in 1930 and became managing editor in 1937. At age forty-one he turned to politics and became a personal and political advisor to Wendell Willkie. Willkie was the Republican nominee for the 1940 presidential election and lost the election to Franklin D. Roosevelt. After Willkie's death in 1944 Davenport became a defacto leader of the internationalist Republicans. Following World War II he was on the staff of Life and Time until 1952.†Simon & Schuster unknown books

MCMURTRY LARRY BARRY FLORENCE V
A Century of Children’s Books by Florence V. Barry. Signed by Larry McMurtry
New York: George H. Doran n.d. Larry McMurtry’s copy signed by him. Illustrated with stills from the film. A used and worn copy with hinges starting and with some edge wear without dust jacket. A literary reference book. A dedicated book man McMurtry opened the first Booked Up book store in Georgetown Washington D.C. in 1970. In 1987 along with his sister Sue Deen he opened The Blue Pig Book Shop in the small Texas town of Archer City which in 1988 was renamed Booked Up. It became one of the largest single used bookstores in the United States. After struggling over the years with declining sales and a changing industry the decision was made to sell off the largest share of the inventory and downsize the business. The auction took place on August 10th and 11th leaving enough stock to continue as a viable brick and mortar retail operation in addition to their on-line efforts. The auction was very well publicized and brought dealers and other curious folks from around the world to observe and participate. As stated by Mr. McMurtry on the week-end of the sale "I've never seen that many people lined up in Archer City and I'm sure I never will again. George H. Doran unknown books
