Holland Day was born in South Dedham Massachusetts into a family of wealth and social responsibility. By 1900 he was with Alfred Stieglitz the most influential champion and practitioner of art photography in America and Europe. Because of the challenging nature of much of his subject matter sacred religious themes adult male nude figures Day enjoyed a slightly edgier and more heightened reputation at the time. Influenced by William Morris he established a publishing house in Boston in 1893 encouraged young and unusual authors among them Aubrey Beardsley and Oscar Wilde and was in effect a pioneer of what we would today call "networking" in the most positive sense of the word. At the same time he became ever more involved in photography sometimes using as models the talented immigrants whose education he sponsored most notably the Lebanese immigrant/mystic writer-to-be Kahlil Gibran who was an angelic-looking and handsome man. In 1904 Day's studio burned down destroying his negatives. The photographs in museums today are from Day's home or friends' collections especially Stieglitz and the British photographer Frederick Evans. A long-overdue critical re-assessment. ‎Quiconque regarde pour la première fois une grande carte de la Hollande, s'étonne qu'il puisse y avoir un pays d'une forme si singulière. De prime abord, on ne saurait dire si c'est la terre ou l'eau qui y domine, si la Hollande appartient au continent plutôt qu'à la mer. A voir ces côtes découpées et déprimées, ces golfes profonds, ces grands fleuves qui perdent l'aspect de fleuves, et semblent porter à la mer des mers nouvelles, et cette mer, qui, devenue une sorte de fleuve, pénètre dans les terres et les morcelle en archipels ; les lacs, les vastes marais, les canaux qui s'entre-croisent de toutes parts, – il semble qu'un pays si profondément crevassé va d'un moment à l'autre se désagréger et disparaître. On dirait qu'il ne peut être habité que par des castors et des phoques, et l'on pense que les habitants, puisqu'il s'en trouve d'assez hardis pour y rester, ne sauraient y dormir l'esprit tranquille. Voilà quelles furent mes réflexions, la première fois que je jetai les yeux sur une grande carte de la Hollande ; alors me vint le désir de savoir quelque chose sur la formation de ce singulier pays ; ce que j'en appris me détermina à faire ce livre...‎
