The exhibition is titled after a quadriptych of paintings depicting the artist's grandmother and his uncle playing an accordion.Jan Vanriet's work mainly concerns the memory of history and the construction of pictorial surface. As Martin Herbert writes: "Vanriet builds up his paintings in layers, and the strata of underpainting have, in his case, a polyvalent quality. In some cases they form glazes that gift the paintings with an internal glow; in others, the half-visible ghosts of earlier paintings both reaffirm the idea that something is being held back, and situate Vanriet's paintings as a carefully wrought, crafted statement that has gone through stages in order to reach a conclusive point, like a phrase honed through multiple careful edits." Jan Vanriet's mother, father and uncle participated in the Resistance movement and were deported by the Nazis. His parents met in the Mauthausen concentration camp and their stories and memories of the Second World War and its aftermath continue to permeate his paintings. Themes of love, loss, identity, destiny and disappearance pervade his work. And yet Vanriet says: "The starting point may be my family, but I see it as a universal story. I don't want the themes to be too narrow, too close to me, because they should go wider than that. If not, it is only anecdote and I have not painted well enough."‎

‎Scarcely any images have been preserved of the mass migration from Europe to the New World which occurred between 1850 and 1940. Of course, photographs do exist concerning the lives of Jewish migrants prior to their departure (Roman Vishniac in the Eastern European shetls), as well as photographs taken on the arrival of those migrants at their destination (Jacob Riis in the Lower East Side of New York). However, images from the ports of embarcation are to be found only in connection with Antwerp's artist Eugeen Van Mieghem (1875- 1930) who, around 1900, produced moving works of art portraying the roughly 2.5 million people who emigrated to the United States and Canada on the Red Star Line. This book tells the story of "The Missing Images" that have been rediscovered internationally in recent years.‎

Tientallen stammen, honderden takjes en duizenden blaadjes zijn bewegingloos geschilderd in een sereen blauwe kleur. Het licht van de maan en de sterren geven witte accenten aan het mythische bos waar ik tot ben toegetreden. Het schilderij omringt mij steeds meer wanneer ik dichter bij stap. Maar hoewel er geen zuchtje wind in het bos lijkt te bespeuren, verandert de kleur van de lucht boven de takken voortdurend. Soms lijkt het wat geler en groener te worden. Achter de fa ade van de blauwe kleur die ik in eerste instantie zie, huist een verborgen gelaagdheid.‎

Transcending stereotypes, this history of commercial sex offers a nuanced understanding of the difficulties and opportunities associated with paid sex for women, men and trans persons past and present. Elwin Hofman is a cultural historian and writer. He teaches at Utrecht University and has (co)authored several books on cultural history, including a history of homosexuality in Belgium. Magaly Rodr guez Garc a is an authority on the history of international labour organisations and subaltern history. She is a professor at KU Leuven and collaborates with Belgian and foreign colleagues on projects regarding, inter alia, sex work and prostitution policy at the local, national and supranational levels. In the context of oral history projects, she became closely involved with advocacy groups for vulnerable persons such as sex workers and homeless people. Pieter Vanhees is a social historian and has researched the history of prostitution in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries at KU Leuven.‎
