REMINISCENCES OF QUEBEC DERIVED FROM RELIABLE SOURCES; FOR THE USE OF TRAVELLERS.
Quebec 1859. 162429-43pp. plus 2 folding maps. Frontis. Original printed wrappers bound into modern plain cloth. Very good. The second edition of REMINISCENCES OF QUEBEC. "considerably augmented and improved" first published in 1858. The present copy has a wrapper dated 1862. The content is identical to that of the 1859 edition and this issue presumably simply used new wrappers. Most of the pamphlet is given over to a general tourist-oriented description of the city. The second part with the caption title "Siege of Quebec in 1759. Translated from the French. Narrative of the doings during the Siege of Quebec.by a Nun of the General Hospital of Quebec." is a translation of a text first published in 1840 and which appeared with differing pagination in the 1858 edition this edition is also listed separately by Sabin as 80871. It is an integral part of the REMINISCENCES pamphlet. The latter part presents an interesting first-hand account of the 1759 siege and storming of the city. TPL 3843. SABIN 69595. Quebec Act
POSTSCRIPT TO THE PENNSYLVANIA PACKET. No. 147 caption title
Philadelphia 1774. 2pp. Single folio sheet. Two insignificant holes in left margin not affecting text a few minor fox marks. Else very good. This extra to THE PENNSYLVANIA PACKET is notable for printing an extract of the debates and proceedings in the House of Commons relative to the Quebec Act. This bill was an important factor in stimulating revolutionary feelings in the colonies and was considered one of the Intolerable Acts by the colonists. Such news as contained herein relating to imposing a military government in Quebec would have been of the utmost interest to American colonists as a possible sign of things to come for the rest of the colonies. It was through this bill that the province of Quebec was extended to the Ohio River on the south and the Mississippi River on the west effectively putting under British military rule much of the hinterland claimed by various other colonies. To placate the French inhabitants the bill allows free exercise of Catholicism and French civil law. "Colonial propagandists effectively used the Quebec Act to widen the breach between the mother country and the colonies by declaring the British government intended to use the 'Popish slaves' of Quebec to establish the doctrines of royal absolutism throughout the American colonies" - DICTIONARY OF AMERICAN HISTORY.

An important colonial newspaper extra making known news that would further kindle revolutionary sentiment in the colonies. SAINT VALLIER Jean Baptiste de la Crois de Chevrieres de Bishop of Quebec
Estat present de leglise et de la colonie francoise dans la Nouvelle France par M. LEvêque de Quebec
Paris: Robert Pepie 1688. Rare first edition of an account of an early trip to Quebec by Saint Vallier the second Bishop of the Province and immediate successor to Laval. Saint-Vallier visited the country in 1685three years before his consecration as Bishopin order to examine the state of the diocese. Lasting eighteen months his itinerary included Quebec City all the parishes along the St. Lawrence and Montreal and following inland rivers and lakes eventually reached as far as Acadia. Upon his return he wrote a report in the form of a letter to a friend giving a colorful account of various Indian tribes and their relations to French colonists. The work became a classic ethnography of French Canada and was reprinted in 1856.The copy offered here is highly unusual in containing an apparently unrecorded cancel of the first prefatory leaf A i.e. A2 making several orthographic corrections and rectifying the omission of a word. The collation of our copy contains one more leaf than the copy described in the NUC or the JCB copy. It finds a match only in the Church copy where the additional leaf is explicitly described as a blank.Although beginning his ecclesiastical career as almoner to Louis XIV Saint Vallier 1653-1727 was more attracted to missionary work than the court of Versailles and spent 42 years as Bishop of Quebec writing the first catechism for French Canada.
