Cox I p. 199: "Pallas was one of the savants chosen by the St. Petersburg Academy to carry on the work of examining the resources of the far distant parts of the Russian Empire. He left St. Petersburg in 1768 and spent a full six years investigating various districts of Siberia the Urals the Caspian Tobolsk Lake Baikal the Lower Volga etc. His reports on the geology fauna and flora are of great scientific value." Boards worn and front hinge split; stain across half-title p.; atlas detached laid-in; extra title-page quire laid-in; uncut edges just the tiniest bit chipped and toned but plates are overall bright and clean. <br/><br/>Over 6 years Pallas visited the Caspian the Altai Mountains Tomsk the Yenisei Tobolsk Lake Baikal Kolyvan and the frontiers of China. The results of his explorations and scientific investigations were of the greatest significance for botany zoology geology geography and ethnology. Atlas with 108 plates including four large folding plates including the large general map of the Russian Empire and 104 plates several folding on ethnology archaeology flora and fauna complete.</p><p><strong>Ref.:</strong> Brunet: IV 325</p><p><strong>Condition:</strong> The boards of the atlas are in very good condition with only minor signs of wear such as light rubbing and a few small chips. The bindings of the text volumes are generally in good condition although they do show some chipping scratches and washed-out areas on the covers. The gilt frames are partly gone and the headcaps of volumes 1 2 and 4 are missing. The contents are generally clean although there are occasional minor blemishes. The atlas is internally in very good condition despite some occasional age toning. The large general map of the Russian Empire exhibits minor wear at the folds.</p><p><strong>Notes:</strong> Peter Simon Pallas 1741–1811 a German naturalist and explorer was commissioned by the Academy of Sciences in St Petersburg to lead one of the most significant scientific expeditions ever sent initiated by Catherine II to explore the vast Russian Empire. Many of its regions remain poorly understood. This work presents a summary of Pallas's discoveries in southern Russia. Nur gering berieben leicht stockfleckig. Ein gut erhaltenes Set! Von größter Bedeutung! Neben dem Brief in dem Pallas dem Zoologen Thomas Pennant zeitgleich mit Büsching und Banks!! über Cooks Tod berichtete enthält das Werk eine große Anzahl von umfangreich kommentierten Briefen von und an James Cook was einen phantastischen Einblick in die Hintergründe der Ereignisse gibt! Die Briefe finden sich in Band 1 S. 1 ff. und eine immense Anzahl in Band 2 S. 47 ff. Darunter von größter Bedeutung der Brief von Cook an den Sekretär der Royal Society Stephens in dem Cook den bisherigen Verlauf der Reise zusammenfasst und den Harris in St. Petersburg Pallas zeigte – also zusammen mit dem Brief von Clerke die Originalquelle für Büschings Bericht über Cooks dritte Reise!! Ebenso enthalten sind Briefe von Fourneaux u. a. in Bd. 1 auf S. 18 sein Bericht an Stephens über die 2. Reise eine ganze Reihe weiterer in Bd. 2 S. 88 ff. zahlreiche Schreiben von und an Cooks Astronomen Bayly Vol. 2 S. 200 ff. Burney Bd. 2 S. 135 197 ff. Pickersgill Bd. 2 S-. 75 ff. eine enorme Quelle über Cook in den zahlreichen Briefen von und an Stephens Sekretär der Royal Society Bd. 2 S. 48 ff. Zu Pallas' Brief an Pennant – Hauptstück der beiden Bände: Bisher herrschte weitgehend die Meinung dass Pallas' Brief an Büsching die einzige Nachricht gewesen sei die zu einem so frühen Zeitpunkt aus St. Petersburg nach Europa ging. Pallas schrieb jedoch zeitgleich an Banks und an Büsching – beides Briefe die in der Cook-Forschung bisher kaum Beachtung fanden was wohl auf ihr sehr spätes Veröffentlichungsdatum zurückzuführen ist der Brief an Banks erschien 1843 jener an Pennant erst 1908. Pallas' Brief an Pennant ist die erste englische Variante der zweiten also der etwas umfangreicheren Nachricht die Pallas auch an Büsching versandte zweiter Pallas-Brief um die Umstände um Cooks Tod bekannt zu geben. Bereits am 10. Januar 1780 hatte Pallas sowohl an Büsching als auch an Banks geschrieben um ihnen die Neuigkeiten so schnell wie möglich mitzuteilen. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt lagen ihm jedoch nur Auszüge aus den Briefen Cooks und Clerkes vor. Kurz darauf erhielt er jedoch von Harris dem englischen Gesandten in St. Petersburg Einblick in die ungekürzten Originalbriefe und schrieb erneut an Büsching und auch an Pennant wodurch beiden die wie Büsching es nennt "richtigere und umständlichere Nachricht" vorlag. Bei dem Brief an Pennant handelt es sich um eine wörtliche Übersetzung des Schreibens das Büsching erhielt. unknown
