<p>Scarce 1st edition copy in more recent library binding. This work is now known to be have been written by Simon Berington 1680-1755 a Catholic priest. Although the title states that it was translated from the Italian it was first written in English and first published in London. The book describes the finding of a lost Utopia called Mezzorania in northern Africa. It was extremely popular at the time. This copy is classed as 'fair' because it has a number of library annoyances - stamps and a bookplate - and some clumsy repair. It is however complete clean and readable. The binding with gilt titles and library references to the spine is sound and clean with very little wear. The cloth on the boards has some darkened areas. Internally the endpapers and an initial blank were replaced when the book was rebound. There is a library bookplate and reference on the front pastedown the remains of a library sticker tiny piece plus a roughened area on the fep and a pencil note by a later owner on the verso of the fep. The title page has lost the gutter edge and has some reasonable repair. There is an old ink signature at the top and a faint library stamp. Contents: xiii 3 335 1 with decorative initial capitals and headpieces. The paper is toned but sound. Some stiff paper has been used to repair the gutters of pp iv-x and p 335 and there is a pale library stamp on the side margins of pp 15 67 119 195 231 279 and 311. The final page has a stamp just above 'Finis'. There is a pale tape repair to the gutters between pp 24/25 and a more recent archive tape repair to a small bottom edge tear on p191/2. Pages 241/2 and 243/4 have lost their bottom corner tips; p 321/2 has a rough side edge and there is an odd mark in the bottom margin of p 193/4.
