First edition first printing of Kuznets's second book following on from his doctoral thesis Cyclical Fluctuations 1926 and later followed by Seasonal Variations in Industry and Trade 1933. "Together these three works analyze the cyclical seasonal and secular trends in economic data and they describe the nature causes and propagation of business cycles. They also relate business cycles to certain long-term cycles that Kuznets named 'secondary secular movements' also known as 'Kuznets cycles' and to seasonal movements. Kuznets's key innovation was to describe the process of the propagation of cycles and to locate their generation and continuation in lags and discontinuities in the response of one sector of the economy to changes in another sector. The discussion of long-term cycles is also significant for connecting changes in population which had been a neglected endogenous variable until then with changes in other economic variables such as consumption investment capital formation immigration and foreign trade" American National Biography. Kuznets won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1971 for "his empirically founded interpretation of economic growth which has led to new and deepened insight into the economic and social structure and process of development". Amsterdam: Claes Jansz. Visscher 1618. Large 1mo broadsheet 66.5 x 46.5 cm with engraved illustration 53 x 45.5 cm at the head with Visscher's name in the plate at lower right and a letterpress verse text below. Impressive large allegorical print of the defeat of the Arminians at the Synod of Dort in 1618 here in the rare first Visscher state. The publisher and engraver Claes Jansz. Visscher heavily reworked the plate of an earlier print by Simon Frisius commemorating the Dutch-Spanish truce of 1609 entitled: Pyramis pacifica. He revised the image so extensively that his revision is often treated as a separate work making the present version its first state. It is the most spectacular print to come out of the Arminian controversy. A more common much smaller and less impressive engraving was also published.A heated theological and political conflict had raged in the Low Countries between the Arminians from 1610 also called Remonstrants and Gomarists for more than a decade when it came to a head with the Synod of Dort 1618/19 which decided in favour of the Gomarists. The Synod led to the 1619 execution of the Republics greatest statesman Johan van Oldenbarnevelt who had supported the Arminian cause. In revenge his sons Reinier and Willem conspired to assassinate the Gomarist Dutch stadholder Maurits of Nassau Prince of Orange. Other prominent members of Dutch society who had political religious or personal grudges against the Prince lent their support. The plot was betrayed in February 1623 and the conspirators arrested and executed from March to May.A corner at the foot torn off and replaced with blank paper with the loss of most of the imprint and the ends of the last 8 lines of verse. First French editions of two complementary works in matching format and layout by Simon Stevin on the layout of army camps and on hydraulic engineering for fortifications in particular the use of pivoted sluices for deepening waterways draining land and operating locks. The Castrametation provides a window into daily life in the Dutch army during the Eighty Years' War of independence from Spain shedding light on both the physical arrangement of troops supplies armaments etc. and the rules that soldiers were expected to follow. The Fortification par escluses both reflects and helped to establish the Dutch mastery of the seas and waterways which was unique among nations at this date. While the numerous fortification plans are presented as general types to illustrate principles many are based on actual Dutch cities. The book therefore provides Stevin's analysis of the strtegic situation of many Dutch cities and the ways their security could be improved by hydraulic engineering. Both works were published during the Twelve Years' Truce 1609-1621 partly in anticipation of the renewal of hostilities in 1621 and therefore the need to improve the Dutch defences.With ink owner's additions to the fortification plan on F3 of the second work. Four of the fortification plans also have some additions drawn over them perhaps somewhat later in pencil. With bookplate. The Castrametation lacks 2 preliminary leaves with the portrait and coat-of-arms of Maurits of Nassau Prince of Orange. With a water stain at the head of the leaves in the first half and slightly browned throughout. The binding shows a few stains and scuffmarks with one tape broken at one joint and the paper label tattered but is otherwise good. First edition of "an important work" Blackmer of a stunning and beautifully illustrated account of some of the earliest explorations in the Sinai southern Jordan and northwest Arabia complete with all the magnificent views in extremely large format the double-page plates measuring about 58.5 x 83 cm and the folding map of the Sinai about 74 x 102 cm. All subsequent editions including the English one were published in octavo and contained only a few plates based on the present first edition all in drastically reduced format. The plates show maps plans of ancient sites views of ruins and other buildings coastal and other topographic views costume plates hieroglyphic and other inscriptions flora and fauna. Laborde journeyed to the ancient city of Petra in what is now Jordan with the engineer Linant de Bellefonds in 1828 travelling from Suez via St. Catherine's and through Wadi al-Araba to Akabah. The topographic term Arabie Pétrée derives from Ptolemy's division of Arabia into three regions. The maps in the present book show it as the Sinai peninsula the southern part of what is now Jordan and the northwestern part of the Arabian peninsula. The city of Petra itself is extensively documented in many of the present beautiful plates.Slight browning and foxing occasional waterstaining and tears to folds; a small tear in the map repaired but in all a good wide-margined copy in loose sheets apparently never bound. Second French edition of Pallas's 1768-1774 journeys through Russia. Peter Simon Pallas Berlin 1741-1811 studied medicine and natural history in Germany Holland and England. In 1767 he went to St Petersburg and began to conduct research in Russia. He was an eminent botanist zoologist and geographer and "sought to advance from merely describing nature to finding the causal interrelationships and hidden regularities of natural phenomena." Darwin acknowledged his work to have been influential in the development of evolutionary ideas DSB .In the years 1768 to 1774 Pallas joined so-called "academic expeditions" which traversed the Russian Empire from west to east. He studied flora and fauna landscape geological condition local population and culture. His findings were published in Reise durch verschiedenen Provinzen des russischen Reichs 3 volumes St Petersburg 1771-1776. The French translation of the work appeared in five volumes and one atlas-volume 1788-1793. The present nouvelle édition revised by Lamarck and Langlès comprises eight text-volumes and one atlas volume with maps and plates. The large map of Russia 55 x 117 cm is accompanied by ten others of parts of Russia three folding and two double-page. The other illustrations show plants ca. 58 costumes animals buildings inscriptions etc. A fine set; large bookplates of "Charles Baron de Selby" with smaller bookplates with the text "Caroli de Hoffmann Bruxellis" pasted onto them.
