‎Berlin: no publisher 1786. First edition in German of Linguet's treatise on syphilis first printed in French in 1766 as La Cacomonade. Linguet chose as his pseudonym Pangloss the optimistic teacher in Voltaire's Candide who is blighted by syphilis. Linguet presents the book as a supplement to Voltaire's work although this German edition identifies him as the author. Linguet's choice of pseudonym is an interesting attribution and was probably an attempt to capitalize on the success of Candide which had proved highly popular undergoing seventeen editions in its publication year of 1759 alone. Linguet's treatise on syphilis traces the origins of the disease as with Voltaire tracing it to the sailors of Columbus and proposes measures to stem its spread. Linguet 1736-1794 was a respected lawyer indeed perhaps the most renowned lawyer in France in the 1760s and 1770s but was fond of being a controversialist with his wide-ranging polemics on history politics and law garnering him many enemies. He eventually ended up under the guillotine's knife as a reactionary but was re-appraised by Marx and other 19th-century socialists due to his critiques of free wage labour as disguised servitude. Simon Nicolas Henri Linguet 1736-1794 was a French journalist and lawyer "whose delight in taking views opposing everyone else's earned him exiles imprisonment and finally the guillotine" Encyclopaedia Britannica online. In this period he is notable for being perhaps the most vocal opponent of the ascendant physiocrats with this book attacking their ideas within the framework of his support for the establishment of new canals. "Linguet's 1769 book was not an engineer's but rather a project designer's who discussed the usefulness assets and flaws of existing canals. He submitted several constructions in different French provinces. The epistolary form of his work allowed him to change subjects frequently and broach peripheral questions" Kaplan & Sophus Reinert The Economic Turn: Recasting Political Economy in Enlightenment Europe. It was from these peripheral questions that he could attack the physiocrats and their "agromania & the passion to write these past few years on economic matters" those who "pretended to be shepherds in the middle of Paris" and "sowed their seeds on their own writing tables". That said at this stage Linguet does not fundamentally oppose phyisocrat arguments to liberalize the grain trade and he does not offer detailed economic assessments of physiocratic thought - in keeping with his controversialist ways he mainly opposes physiocracy as he saw it as the latest fad and disliked its adherents. ‎Amsterdam & Hellevoetsluis: 1885. First and only edition classified as "Geheim" secret copy no. 8 of an unknown number of copies. WorldCat lists only one copy in the Haagse Defensiebibliotheek. This report was written by two Dutch marine engineers after their inspection tour of cruisers at the Marine Department of the International Inventions Exhibitions in London and various British shipyards including the well-known Newcastle-based firm Armstrong Mitchell & Co. The report starts with a brief introduction to the purposes and itinerary of the trip followed by background information on cruisers in general detailed descriptions of various types and specific examples such as the Japanese vessels Naniwa-Kan and Takachiho-Kan and the torpedo-cruisers Scout and Fearless. Cop was appointed professor of naval architecture at the Polytechnic School in Delft in 1887 while Van Veen 1859-1935 published several technical works and wrote journal articles on naval policy. This copy was held by the "Bureau van den Inspecteur o.d. Stoomvaartdienst" Office of the Inspector for the Steamboat Service with an inked inscription on the front board. It is a nice copy of this timely and somewhat elusive work. Foolscap folio 335 x 215 mm. With 5 lithographed extensive folding plates of ship plans 2 of the Japanese cruiser Naniwa-Kan built by the firm Armstrong Mitchell & Co. the first of these measuring c. 320 x 1350 mm Original black cloth-backed pale grey paper-covered printed boards. A little rubbed boards browned at the margins pale toning and light foxing to the text remains very good. hardcover‎

A small group comprising Clement's pamphlet supporting the establishment of a non-partisan government a response to Clement claiming to be the second part of his pamphlet the anonymous counterblast Faults in the Fault-Finder and Clement's defence of his treatise in A Vindication of the Faults on Both Sides. In the past Faults on Both Sides has been attributed to Robert Harley but it is generally accepted that Simon Clement c.1654-c.1730 was the author. However it does seem that Harley had some role in its publication and it can be seen as election propaganda for the 1710 election with Harley being the implicit non-partisan choice. Joseph Trapp published a response arguing that the pamphlet was a conspiracy by the Whigs who saw that their dominance was ending and were consequently urging for a coalition government to keep their power which Clement responded to in A Vindication. At any rate the number of editions which the pamphlet and its responses ran to shows the significance of the publication on the contemporary political scene.
