La République et le Second Empire. — "A travers la vie de trois officiers de la famille Pellion, depuis l'École de Saint-Germain jusqu'à la colonisation, Jean Leduc nous retrace d'une manière documentée et vivante les différentes facettes de la vie militaire en les replaçant dans le cadre de l'histoire de la Marine et de l'Armée. De sous-lieutenant de cavalerie à général de brigade, entre les campagnes napoléoniennes et l'Alqérie où il effectue plusieurs séjours, l'aîné, Léon, participe à l'intervention française en Morée, épisode méconnu que l'auteur nous permet de redécouvrir. Il prend part au maintien de l'ordre, en particulier après le coup d'État du 2 décembre 1851. Alphonse, le cadet, entame sa carrière par un voyage de circumnavigation en 1817 et la termine comme vice-amiral et préfet maritime de Brest. Ses états de service nous rappellent le rôle fondamental de la marine, non seulement instrument diplomatique au moment de l'indépendance de l'Amérique espagnole, mais aussi moyen de pression comme lors de l'expédition du Tage. Alphonse sert également en mer Méditerranée, au cours du blocus d'Alger, mais aussi à des postes d'administrateur. Sa dernière campagne le conduit en Crimée où son fils Fortuné est présent. Ce dernier meurt en Cochinchine en 1863. De Napoléon Ier à Napoléon III, les biographies parallèles des frères Pellion nous révèlent divers aspects de l'armée française au XIXe siècle. La plume alerte de Jean Leduc nous restitue la carrière professionnelle et la vie privée de ces témoins de l'histoire de notre pays, d'un siècle à l'autre."
