‎Routledge 2006. 4to. First Edition with illustrations and numerous plans many coloured in outline in the text; cloth gilt back a fine copy in unclipped dustwrapper. Naval Staff Histories were produced after WWII in order to provide as full an account of the various actions as was possible at the time. The audience was largely serving officers; some of the volumes were classified not to restrict their distribution but to allow the writers to be as candid as possible. At this stage of history they represent a uniquely valuable resource. ‎ROYAL NAVY:‎

‎VICTORIAN ROYAL NAVY RECRUITMENT BROADSIDE SEEKING 'STOUT HEALTHY BOYS'‎

‎London: W. P. Griffith and Sons Ltd. 1888. Printed broadside 34.4 x 20.5cm. Minor contemporary manuscript correction to one of the printed height/chest measurements. There are three neat horizontal filing folds and a minor nick to each end of one of the folds otherwise condition is very good. An uncommon late nineteenth-century naval recruitment broadside boldly titled: "Wanted for the Royal Navy Stout Healthy Boys of Good Character from 15 to 16 1/2 Years of Age". The broadside begins by setting out the various requirements for new recruits such as height and chest measurements as well as the stipulation that they "must be able to read and write must have the written consent of their Parents or Guardians and must sign an engagement to serve for 12 years from the date of attaining the age of 18". It then moves on to outline scales of pay allowances pensions periods of leave and other arrangements for example "boys after 6 months' service can send money home to their parents or guardians at the following rates". At the foot is a list of ships including the names of their captains and ports currently seeking recruits as well as the locations of recruitment offices. </p><p>A rather fun piece of naval ephemera which would have surely appealed to many Victorian youths' sense of adventure. ‎Visit By Command of His Majesty the King of his Excellency the Prime Minister of Nepal to HMS "Dreadnought" Friday June 19th 1908.‎

‎London: 1908. Admiral Dunbar-Nasmith's copy with additional illustrations A specially produced copy likely issued to dignitaries from the library of Admiral Sir Martin Dunbar-Nasmith although unmarked as such. It contains an additional six postcard illustrations of HMS Dreadnought Bellerophon Superb Invincible and Indomitable. Dunbar-Nasmith captained a D-class submarine from 1911 to 1912 and served aboard HMS Indomitable in November 1908. The launch of HMS Dreadnought in 1906 represented a revolution in naval firepower. "In her day the Dreadnought was the cynosure of the early twentieth-century battleship. So epoch making was this one ship that all subsequent battleships are usually referred to as dreadnoughts the name becoming a generic term" Parkinson p. xi. As such the British government was keen to show her off to foreign visitors. In June 1908 the Prime Minister of Nepal Maharaja Sri Teen Chandra Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana 1863-1929 and his entourage were invited to watch the ship on exercise in the English Channel. To accompany this visit the admiralty distributed a small souvenir volume with descriptions and photographs of Dreadnought the Navy's D-class submarines and its torpedo boat destroyers. There are two known states of this work. The more common features a gilt-lettered front board title page captioned tissue guard for the photograph of Dreadnought and folding map. The present rarer state does not have these features but instead has six additional chromolithograph postcard illustrations at the rear. Dunbar-Nasmith 1883-1965 was a Royal Navy submarine captain throughout the First World War and awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions in the Sea of Marmara in 1915. Octavo. Eight tipped-in gelatin silver prints on matte paper with captioned tissue guards and six colour postcard illustrations. Original blue calf by Eyre & Spottiswoode spine gilt in compartments flat bands elaborate gilt panels to boards front board stamped with royal arms in gilt rear board stamped with admiralty device in gilt gilt dentelles silk doublures and endpapers gilt edges binder's stamp to front free endpaper verso. Abrasions and silverfishing to front board edges and dentelles binding sprung pages a little crinkled some foxing internally: a very good copy. "The battle was highly discreditable to the British fleet and not very honorable to their opponents but it is of the highest historical importance in the history of the navy. It marked the lowest pitch reached in discipline and fighting and efficiency by the fleet in the 18th century and it had a very bad effect in confirming the pedantic system of tactics set up by the old Fighting Instructions . ‎Royal Navy O'Beirne Thomas Lewis‎

‎Considerations on the Principles of Naval Discipline and Naval Courts-martial; In which the Doctrines lately laid down in the House of Commons upon those subjects are examined and the conduct of the courts-martial on Admiral Keppel and Sir Hugh Palliser are compared‎

‎London: Printed for J. Almon and J. Debrett 1781. First edition. A2 B-2B4. 4 190 2 ad pp. Errata leaf follows title page. 1 vols. 8vo. Uncut in later drab wrappers chipped and torn lower wrapper especially. Title leaf soiled with abrasion costing four letters in first line. Some old folds and minor soiling bottom corner of last leaf crumpled. First edition. A2 B-2B4. 4 190 2 ad pp. Errata leaf follows title page. 1 vols. 8vo. Courts Martial of Keppel & Palliser during the American Revolution. Written by Thomas Lewis O'Beirne 1748-1823 the Anglican divine whose first publication was the sermon he preached "An excellent sermon preached in St. Paul's Church New-York" NY 1776 as chaplin in Lord Howe's fleet at St. Paul's Chapel in New York after the disastrous fire in New York City of September 21 1776 probably set by Patriot arsonists. Upon his return to England in 1779 O'Beirne wrote a defense of Howe in "A Candid and Impartial Narrative of the Transactions of the Fleet ." L. 1779 and became more and more allied with the Whig party.<br/><br/>This is his defense of Admiral Keppel in the politically charged dispute with Sir Hugh Palliser and Lord Sandwich over their actions in the engagement with the French fleet off the coast of Brest in July 1778. Charges and counter-charges flew over that indecisive and costly encouter Kessel being accused "misconduct and neglect of duty" and of not having done enough to finish off the crippled French fleet. Indeed a claim was made at the time "that had the French been defeated at the time a diplomatic mission to America giving them the opportunity to abandon the French treaty would not have failed" DNB Palliser on the other hand was accused of neglecting to obey an order to come to the support of the rest of the fleet. The dispute ultimately resulted in court-martials of both men resulting in the acquittal of each although Palliser was censured and ruined while Keppel refused to serve under the current Ministry. <br/><br/>"The whole episode had severely weakened the standing of the Navy. Keppel asked not be sent to sea under the current Ministry and so the Admiralty retired him which led to a general resignation by his naval supporters depriving the Navy of many able officers in the continuing war against America." - DNB<br/><br/>The first edition of O'Beirne's account of the two court martials although well represented in institutions is rare on the market; and only one copy of the 2nd edition has appeared at auction over the last 30 years. In April he was moved to the Hampton Court one of four ships which on 6 January 1745 fell in with two French ships of the line off Ushant. Two of the English ships the Captain and the Sunderland parted company. The Hampton Court and Dreadnought continued the chase; but although Mostyn's ship came up with the French it could not engage without the assistance of the Dreadnought and the two Frenchmen got safely into Brest."<br/><br/>Mostyn was brought up for court martial and acquitted but his conduct became an object of popular and official scorn -- this heavily critical pamphlet is usually attributed to Admiral Vernon. ‎Royal Navy: British Acts of Parliament‎

‎COLLECTION OF EIGHT GENERAL ACTS OF THE BRITISH PARLIAMENT RELATING TO THE ROYAL NAVY 1734 - 1762‎

‎London 1762. Eight separate imprints. Dbd. Minor edge wear and toning. Generally very good to near fine condition. In a blue cloth slipcase gilt. A nice collection of British Acts of Parliament relating to the Royal Navy or related seagoing activities. The dominance of the British Royal Navy was unquestioned from the late 1600s until well into the 20th century. These mid 18th-century acts were printed at a time when the British Navy was swiftly ascending to the peak of its power through superior financing tactics training organization population support hygiene dockyard facilities logistical support and warship design and construction. By the early 19th century the British Navy saw little action mainly due to the lack of a worthy adversary. Each of these titles is rare with between one and four copies listed in institutions in ESTC. <br> <br> The separate imprints included here are as follows: <br> <br> 1 AN ACT TO SETTLE HOW FAR OWNERS OF SHIPS SHALL BE ANSWERABLE FOR THE ACTS OF THE MASTERS OR MARINERS drop title.
