‎8vo., First Edition, with 32 plates on 16 and a full-page map in the text; original pictorial wrappers printed in red and black, wire-stitched as issued, a near fine copy. Known by mariners the world over as the 'Flying Angel' (from the device on its ensign), the 'Mission' made an invaluable contribution to the welfare of RN and merchant seamen during WWII. This fragile publication provides a deceptively detailed account of the 'Angel's' global effort; sadly, few copies seem to have survived, let alone in anything like this condition. Noble was C-in-C Western Approaches from February 1941 to November 1942. A rare survival.‎

‎ADMIRALTY‎

‎The Royal Navy and the Mediterranean Convoys. A Naval Staff History. With a Preface by Malcolm Llewellyn-Jones. [With a Foreword by Admiral Sir Jonathon Band].‎

‎4to., First Edition, with 11 coloured plans (8 double-page), 4 full-page diagrams and several illustrations and charts in the text; pictorial boards lettered in white, a fine copy. Naval Staff Histories were produced after WWII in order to provide as full an account of the various actions as was possible at the time. The audience was largely serving officers; some of the volumes were classified, not to restrict their distribution but to allow the writers to be as candid as possible. At this stage of history they represent a uniquely valuable resource. This volume contains Battle Summary 18 (Mediterranean Convoys 1941) and Battle Summary 32 (Malta Convoys 1942), completed by J. Owen and originally issued in 1944 and 1945 respectively. These summaries were combined and extensively revised by Pitcairn-Jones and re-issued in 1957 as Selected Convoys (Mediterranean) 1941-42. By this time Pitcairn-Jones had access to the full records including those captured from German and Italian forces.‎

‎HMS HOWE‎

‎HMS Howe 1944-45. [With a Foreword by Captain H. .U. McCall]. RARE RECORD OF HER LAST WARTIME COMMISSION‎

‎4to., First and Sole Edition, with a frontispiece, 25 plates on 18, numerous illustrations (one full-page) in the text and front endpaper map in red and black; original grey-blue cloth, upper board blocked with ship's crest in blue, very neatly recased with old endpapers preserved, a very good, clean copy. This copy was formerly in the possession of G.A.J. Seymour (possibly Chief Shipwright). HMS Howe's last wartime commission took her from Scapa Flow to Auckland, including the UK naval ports, Gibraltar, Algiers, Port Said, Suez, Aden, Bombay, Trincomalee, Singapore, Colombo, Fremantle, Sydney and Auckland. Then she travelled across the Pacific to take part in air strikes against Leyte. Then back to Fremantle and on to Durban (where this publication seems to have been printed), Cape Town, Mombassa, the Seychelles and Colombo again, after which she retraced her outward route back to the UK. This record is the usual ship's mixture of chronology, geography, anecdote, private reminiscence, humour, cartoons and Crossing the Line. There is much coverage of her gunnery for which she was renowned throughout the Pacific Fleet. AN IMPORTANT AND VALUABLE ADDITION TO THE OPERATIONAL RECORD OF THE KGV BATTLESHIPS IN WWII. RARE. We can find no record of this publication in any reference known to us.‎

‎SOWDON D.‎

‎Admiralty Coastal Salvage Vessels. Design and Service 1943 - 1993.‎

‎Roy. 8vo., First Edition, with numerous photographs, maps and plans throughout; laminated photographic boards, a near fine copy. In 1942 the Admiralty needed salvage vessels to cope with the increasing number of incoming merchant ships bombed or torpedoed. Rescue tugs were built or requisitioned to tow ships damaged at sea, but there was a need to keep the home ports and their approaches clear of wrecks. The response was this class of nine coastal salvage vessels which became the core of the Admiralty Salvage Service during clearance operations in NW Europe following the Normandy landings. The class carried out very valuable work in opening up the French, Belgian and Dutch ports enabling supplies and food to be brought to local populations. After the war several of the class were available for charter by civilian salvage firms and one, Risdon Beazley, became the most successful British salvage company of its day. The remaining vessels stayed in Admiralty service, conducting operations such as the raising of the Dover blockships and other wartime obstructions, as well as helping the salvage effort after Suez. Four of the class were converted to diesel in the 1960’s and became known as the ‘Kin class’, a familiar sight to many around the naval ports of the UK.‎

‎8vo., First Edition, with a frontispiece map and 3 full-page maps in the text; original series binding of ivory buckram blocked in gilt, navy blue buckram back lettered in gilt, covers lightly age-soiled else a very good, bright, clean copy. Navy Records Society, Vol. XCV. With 6pp series catalogue bound in at end. This copy was presented by J E Morpurgo to the library of Christ's Hospital School and bears its bookplate on front paste-down and presentation bookplate with press-mark on front free endpaper. Jack Eric Morpurgo (1918-2000), professor, historian, man of letters and eminent Old Blue, was educated at Christ's Hospital School and the University of North Brunswick, Canada. After service with the Royal Artillery in WWII he worked as an editor at Penguin Books and was several times nominated by Allen Lane as his successor, but the appointment fell foul of the volatile relationship shared by the two men (Morpurgo wrote Lane's biography in 1970). After Penguin he joined the National Book League (now Book Trust) where he rose to Director-General. He was subsequently appointed Professor of American Literature at the University of Leeds and was awarded several visiting professorships at universities throughout the world. He is the stepfather of the writer Michael Morpurgo. Scarce.‎

‎CHATTERTON E. Keble‎

‎English Seamen and the Colonization of America. IN FULL MOROCCO‎

‎MALLALIEU J.P.W.‎

‎Extraordinary Seaman. Illustrated by Mudge-Marriatt. BRIGHT, CLEAN COPY IN UNCLIPPED DUSTWRAPPER‎

‎8vo., First Edition, with illustrations in the text, small neat inscription on front free endpaper; cloth, a very good, bright, clean copy in unclipped dustwrapper. The story of Captain Lord Robert Cochrane, tenth Earl of Dundonald, one of the most eminent, if remarkably under-written, figures of the eighteenth-century Royal Navy.‎

‎ANSCOMB Charles‎

‎Submariner. Foreword by Vice-Admiral Sir Sydney Raw.‎

‎8vo., First Edition, with a frontispiece and 14 plates on 6, some very faint offsetting from fold-ins to free endpapers; cloth, gilt back, fore-edges lightly spotted else a very good, bright, clean copy in unclipped dustwrapper, the latter chafed (just affecting lettering) at head of backstrip. Arguably the scarcest of British WWII submarine memoirs. The author began the war in Parthian before moving with her to the Mediterranean. In 1941 he transferred to Tempest which was lost on her maiden patrol in 1942. The last section deals with his escape from captivity in Italy. Includes excellent plates of the interior of Parthian. Particularly elusive in good dustwrapper. Enser, p.416; Law, 1108.‎

‎BALLARD G. A.‎

‎The Black Battlefleet. [A Study of the Capital Ship in Transition. With a Foreword by Admiral of the Fleet Earl Mountbatten of Burma]. SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY‎

‎Roy. 4to., First Edition, with very numerous photographs and double-page detailed line drawings in the text; cloth gilt, gilt back, a very good, bright, clean copy in unclipped, lightly sunned dustwrapper. A PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR WITH HIS SIGNED HOLOGRAPH INSCRIPTION ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER. The culmination of almost twenty years' research by the author, this is a standard reference on the evolution of the mid-Victorian Royal Navy. Crucially, Ballard was an eye-witness of the latter part of the period of which he wrote; even in 1929 there were not many men remaining with such experience first-hand. Much of the text appeared first as an extended series of papers in 'The Mariner's Mirror' from 1929 until the author's death in 1948.‎

‎BALLEINE G.R.‎

‎The Tragedy of Philippe d'Auvergne. Vice-Admiral in the Royal Navy and last Duke of Bouillon.‎

‎BARTSCH Max‎

‎Was man uber die Kriegsschiffs-Typen wissen muss.‎

‎8vo., with 33 fine illustrations and 17 drawings in the text, neat contemporary signature on front free endpaper; original printed card covers, a near fine copy in the striking pictorial dustwrapper, the latter unclipped, neatly reinforced at inner edges and lightly rubbed at fold-ins. Remarkably well-preserved wartime propaganda title (from a favoured Nazi printing house) printed in black-letter Gothic type. There are some very useful photographs among the more standard shots; although most of the captions are understandably generic the majority are instantly identifiable. The unusually striking dustwrapper illustrations by the author depicts a (probably imaginary) view of either 'Scharnhorst' or 'Gneisenau' accompanied by a 'Hipper'-class heavy cruiser and escorted by a Type-34 destroyer. The camouflage and fittings suggest the Norwegian campaign of 1940 but we have been unable to confirm that the two capital vessels served together in those waters.. Scarce, especially in this condition‎
