‎BOWYER Chaz‎

‎Eugene Esmonde VC, DSO. NEAR FINE COPY IN DUSTWRAPPER‎

‎8vo., First Edition, with very numerous photographs in the text; blue cloth, gilt back, a near fine copy in price-clipped dustwrapper. This well illustrated biography of Esmonde - the best to date - inevitably concentrates on the Bismarck and Channel Dash actions. A valuable complement to Robertson's 'Channel Dash' (1958); the attack comprised six Swordfish torpedo bombers, each with a crew of three, versus the battlecruisers SCHARNHORST and GNEISENAU and the heavy cruiser PRINZ EUGEN. Impossibly outgunned, the six old aircraft nevertheless pressed home their attack, during which all six machines were destroyed. Of the eighteen crewmen involved only five survived. Law, 0756; Mulholland & Jordan B87.‎

‎SELIGMAN Adrian‎

‎No Stars to Guide. Decorations by Konstance Pares. NEAR FINE COPY IN UNCLIPPED DUSTWRAPPER‎

‎8vo., First Edition, with tinted frontispiece, wood-engraved title-vignette, 20 plates printed in blue, numerous wood-engraved illustrations in the text and 6 large folding maps (one printed in colours), some faint offsetting from fold-ins to free endpapers; sand cloth, upper board and backstrip lettered in green, a near fine copy in unclipped dustwrapper, the latter lightly rubbed at extremities. In one of the earliest personal memoirs of naval service in WWII, Seligman gives a thinly veiled account of his experiences in the Aegean in 1941 when he helped to smuggle five Russian merchantmen through the Axis blockade. He returned on MV OLINDA and that journey also is described in full. Although there is no connection whatever, this little-known story is reminiscent in sheer daring and blatant skulduggery of Maclean's fictitious 'The Guns of Navarone'. This is an extraordinary book in other ways. Produced by a major publisher not often given to war memoirs, it is unusually well-produced with lavish illustration and large and detailed maps. The print run must have been small for it is very scarce, especially in this condition. Enser, p.63; Law, 0360.‎

‎POOLMAN Kenneth‎

‎The Kelly. Foreword by Admiral The Earl Mountbatten of Burma. BRIGHT, CLEAN COPY IN UNCLIPPED DUSTWRAPPER‎

‎8vo., First Edition, with frontispiece, 18 plates on 16, full-page map in the text and endpaper maps, small contemporary signature on front free endpaper; navy cloth, gilt back, a bright, clean copy in unclipped dustwrapper, the latter sunned at backstrip and with loss at head and tail. Standard operational account of the famous destroyer commanded by Mountbatten, from its early days in the North Sea to its sinking off Crete. SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION. Enser, p.126; Law, 1064.‎

‎HICKLING Hugh‎

‎The English Flotilla. BRIGHT, CLEAN COPY IN UNCLIPPED DUSTWRAPPER‎

‎8vo., First Edition; rose cloth, backstrip lettered in yellow, a very good, bright, clean copy in unclipped dustwrapper. Dustwrapper artwork by Biro. One of relatively few works of fiction set aboard Royal Navy landing craft in WWII. SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION.‎

‎MONSARRAT Nicholas‎

‎Three Corvettes. Comprising HM Corvette, East Coast Corvette, Corvette Command. [Second Edition. With new Preface by the Author.] NEAR FINE COPY IN UNCLIPPED DUSTWRAPPER‎

‎8vo., Second Edition, with portrait frontispiece and 8 plates on 6, small personal name-stamp on front free endpaper; original green cloth, backstrip lettered in red, a near fine copy in unclipped dustwrapper. With striking dustwrapper artwork by James Holland. The collected edition of Monsarrat's well-known trilogy, first published in October 1945. The three constituent volumes - 'HM Corvette' (1942), 'East Coast Corvette' (1943) and 'Corvette Command' (1944) - are here reproduced in their entirety (but with fewer plates). Taken in sequence they provide a near-continuous record of Monsarrat's early wartime service; furthermore they contain much of the inspiration and context, and in several cases actual incidents, which reappear in his masterpiece 'The Cruel Sea'. This second edition includes a new Preface by the author giving an account of the works' genesis. ALL EARLY ISSUES ARE SCARCE WITH THE DUSTWRAPPER IN THIS CONDITION. Enser, p.120; Law 1010 (both recording the first edition).‎

‎POPE Dudley‎

‎The Battle of the River Plate. Foreword by Admiral Sir Edward Parry. Preface by Admiral Sir Charles Woodhouse. NEAR FINE COPY OF THE ORIGINAL EDITION‎

‎8vo., Fist Edition, with frontispiece, 20 plates on 14, full-page map in the text, front endpaper map and rear endpaper chart; black cloth, gilt back, a near fine copy in unclipped dustwrapper. Dustwrapper artwork by Heinz Kurth. The best and most detailed single-volume account, with many valuable appendices. Parry commanded ACHILLES, Woodhouse commanded AJAX during the action. THE ORIGINAL EDITION IS VERY SCARCE INDEED IN THIS CONDITION. Enser, p.190; Law 0113.‎

‎WOOD Richard‎

‎Abandon Ship. NEAR FINE COPY IN UNCLIPPED DUSTWRAPPER‎

‎8vo., First Edition, neat signature on front free endpaper; blue cloth, gilt back, a near fine copy in unclipped dustwrapper. Vividly-written personal account of life at sea in the Royal Navy 1939-1945.‎

‎ADMIRALTY‎

‎Manual of Seamanship 1937. By Authority of the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty. Volume One [only]. [Third Impression]. BRIGHT, CLEAN COPY OF THE 1941 REISSUE‎

‎8vo., Third Impression, with 26 coloured plates, 15 plates in monochrome, very numerous illustrations and diagrams (many full-page) in the text and 2 large folding plans; original navy blue cloth, upper board blocked in blind, gilt back, a very good, bright, clean copy. With front and rear trade advertisement endpapers. The 1937 edition of the 'pusser's bible' was the first major revision since 1932. First issued in 1938, it was reprinted each year until 1943 (though curiously we have been unable to confirm a 1939 issue). All reprints are very slightly abridged (mostly in terms of illustration; in particular the expensive plate overlays of the first impression were quickly abandoned with the outbreak of hostilities). Well produced and exceptionally well illustrated, it was in common use with officers and ratings alike (unlike its sister the Manual of Navigation), and there is a fair argument for its being today the most evocative Royal Navy publication of the war years. Bright, firm copy of the standard WWII edition.‎

‎FUCHIDA Mitsuo‎

‎Midway. The Battle that doomed Japan. Foreword by Professor Michael Lewis. [Introduction by Admiral Kondo. Translation by M. Chihaya. Edited from the Japanese edition by C.H. Kawakami and R. Pineau]. [First UK Edition]. FIRST UK EDITION IN FULL MOROCCO‎

‎8vo., First Edition thus, with 49 plates on 16, several maps and charts in the text and endpaper maps; handsomely bound in full dark green crushed morocco, sides with gilt frame border, back with raised bands, second and fourth compartments lettered and ruled in gilt, all other compartments tooled in gilt, gilt top, hand-made endpapers, ribbon marker, an elegant copy ideal as a gift or for presentation. The standard account from the Japanese perspective and a classic of WWII. One of the foremost figures in the IJNAF, Mitsuo Fuchida was strike force commander at Pearl Harbor. Unable to take part in operations at Midway due to a recent appendix operation he watched the action from the deck of the flagship, taking notes as events unfolded. Subsequently, he was one of the few Japanese naval officers permitted to study the reports of the battle and is therefore uniquely qualified to deliver this account. For the first US edition (published for USNI) the Japanese original was translated into English by Commander Chihaya and edited by Kawakami and Pineau; their text is repeated here. Importantly, the Japanese photographs (although of poorer quality) are retained, and supplemented by a small number of well-chosen USN pictures. SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION. Albion, p.297; Enser, p. 515.‎
