Se Machiavelli lo avesse conosciuto forse si sarebbe ispirato a lui quale modello per il suo Principe; ma non ebbe il tempo né il modo, se non una sola volta, e di sfuggita. Più stretti invece i legami del Doria con Guicciardini, anche se fra i due non corse mai buon sangue. Andrea Doria aveva la tempra del corsaro, il fascino del principe, la lucidità dell'uomo di Stato. Nato povero, cadetto di un ramo minore della più illustre famiglia ligure, fu prima capitano di ventura al soldo di padroni diversi, poi - a quarantasei anni s'improvvisò ammiraglio, per la Francia, per il Papa, per Genova. Conquistò il potere assoluto a sessantun'anni e lo tenne saldo fino a novantaquattro, sopravvivendo a guerre, assalti, congiure; la più sanguinosa, quella del Fiesco, ispirò drammaturghi come Schiller e filosofi come Rousseau. La sua alleanza con la Spagna di Carlo V inserì la Repubblica di Genova nella politica internazionale del tempo, facendo dei banchieri genovesi, gli arbitri della finanza europea per quasi due secoli. Severo con se stesso e con gli altri, condusse vita austera. Mai gli venne meno il coraggio della ragione: fosse solo per questo, merita d'essere ricordato.
