‎[Aviation] [Australian Flying Corps]‎

‎A vintage photograph of three biplanes from the training wing of the AFC in the air but probably based at Leighterton Aerodrome in England during the First World War‎

‎Very Good. A gelatin silver print 216 × 166 mm lightly creased at the corner-tips; in excellent condition. The aircraft appear to be a Sopwith Camel and two Avro 504s specific models not determined. Offered with two other photographs of a biplane possibly a Sopwith Camel in the air: one is silhouetted above billowing sunlit clouds 147 × 199 mm printed without margins; the other is shown flying between clouds above hedgerows and fields 216 × 166 mm. We purchased these photographs with a small group of aerial photographs of Leighterton Aerodrome.
'By 1917 the Australian Flying Corps AFC consisted of four operational squadrons which outstripped the ability of the Army's Central Flying School at Point Cook to supply sufficient trained airmen. It was decided therefore to establish training squadrons within the AFC. Four such squadrons were subsequently established in the United Kingdom during 1917. 8 Squadron AFC was formed at Wendover on 24 October 1917. It was originally identified as 33 Australian Training Squadron Royal Flying Corps but was renamed along with all of the Australian squadrons in January 1918. The squadron relocated to Cirencester on 9 January 1918 and thence to Leighterton where it remained until disbanded in April 1919. The squadron's principal role was to prepare personnel for service with what was at first 71 Australian Squadron RFC and subsequently 4 Squadron AFC which was operating with British forces over the Western Front' Australian War Memorial website. 3 items. unknown‎

‎Aeropleustike techne romanized from Greek. The aeropleustic art: or navigation in the air by the use of kites or bouyant sales. . . .‎

‎San Francisco: Edward L. Sterne 1969. 4to. 2 51 1 pp. Illustrated title w/ vignette 3 plates. Quarter-brown cloth over brown boards printed label on front cover minor shelfwear slight rubbing still NF copy from the library of Otto C. Winzen 1917-1979 pioneering German-American aeronautical engineer was interned during World War II and later significantly advanced material and construction of high-altitude balloons after World War II. First facsimile edition 1 of 95 copies printed of this curious treatise detailing how Pocock achieved nearly 20 miles per hour while driving his Charvolant a kite-hauling carriage from Bristol to Marlborough in 1827. Pocock was an aviation pioneer who conducted experiments on the use of kites how to lift draw and move items by using kites and finally capped it with his huge kites drawing the Charvolant. One of Pocock’s giant kites still exists in the Museum of Bristol a BBC team recreated and flew the kite successfully in 2009 and in 2009 Takeshi Sugimoto of Kanagawa University determined that as long as the carriage was not exposed to the wind and kites were aloft they did produce sufficient lift to offer steady driving speeds for the carriage. ‎An album of 119 photographs of British aircraft of the Second World War chiefly various models of the Vickers Wellington and Vickers Warwick bombers including many rare and unique prototypes‎

‎Many of the photographs appear to have been taken at Vickers' Brooklands factory near Weybridge Surrey the famous banked race track is visible in many images and possibly also at the nearby Royal Aircraft Establishment Farnborough Hampshire. Nearly all are dated ranging from 1937 to 1946. The gelatin silver prints have been cropped to highlight the stationary aircraft; the resulting photographs are in a visually appealing panoramic format with most of them between 55 and 75 mm high some smaller some larger and approximately 190 mm wide. They are loosely mounted from three to five per page under clear celluloid sheets in a later commercial photograph album. The album is neither here nor there; apart from a crease near a short edge of one print the photographs are in excellent condition. Approximately 35 different aircraft are shown each represented by between two and five photographs taken from different angles. The verso of each print carries the inkstamp of the RTP Research and Technical Publications Photographic Section of variously the Air Ministry Ministry of Aircraft Production or Ministry of Supply. These stamps restricting reproduction are completed in manuscript with a reference number and date; at least one image is also stamped 'Secret'.
The aircraft shown are: Vickers Wellesley Production; Armstrong Whitworth Whitley; Vickers B1/35 1939 1940 and 1941 models - these are prototypes for the Warwick; Vickers Wellington Mk II with and without experimental turret Mk III Mk IV Mk V Mk VIII an unidentified model with an experimental turret Mk X Mk XI Mk XII Gr Mk IV Mk XVI Mk XVII Mk XVIII and T Mk X; Vickers Warwick Mk I Mk I freighter Mk II ASR Mk I ASR Mk I Tropical C Mk I C Mk III Gr Mk II and Gr Mk V; De Havilland Vampire Mk I Mk II Prototype; Westland Welkin Prototype F Mk I F Mk 2; and Vultee Vengeance Mk I. unknown‎

‎Archive and Scrapbook of William C. Grove Jr. a Member of the Cheyenne Hillhoppers Model Airplane Club‎

‎Various locations 1963. Very good. 191 photographs various sizes but most approximately 3 x 4 inches; fifteen leaves of manuscript or typed notes and letters some illustrated; plus various assorted clippings and ephemera. Most photographs affixed to annotated sheets. Light soiling and wear throughout but generally clean. Archive of model airplane enthusiast William C. Grove Jr. Grove 1932-2013 graduated from the University of Wyoming with a degree in engineering and went on to a career at Lockheed as a design engineer. The present scrapbook shows his early enthusiasm for planes and aviation participating with the Cheyenne Hillhoppers in contests and events. Most of the photographs depict model planes or the club members engaged with their aircraft. Grove's notes show sketches of model planes as well as his notes on building and flying. A Western Union telegram from 1959 announces his big win at Plymouth Motor Corp's Third International Model Plane Contest indicating a first place win "in the control line stunt events. Placing in this single event assures Grove of a handsome trophy and a share in the $8750 in U.S. Savings Bonds which will be awarded the winners in this greatest of model aviation contests." Other clippings and ephemera relate to other competitions or news events around model planes. A unique item. unknown‎

‎Do You Want to Fly‎

‎Shanghai: The Comacrib Press 1933. First edition. 8vo xii 448 4pp. Copiously illustrated with half-tone photographs sketches and diagrams by Forman. Publisher's pebbled cloth with gilt spine and cover lettering sprayed page edges in illustrated jacket. Spine mottled and faded else very good in jacket which is lacking about 2/3 of the rear panel.

First book from the American aviator journalist and war correspondent Harrison Forman 1904-1978. The book is quite detailed and somewhat technical in its language though in his preface Forman states:

"It is not the purpose of the author to attempt a technical and exhaustive survey of the field of aviation in the confining limits of the following few chapters. They are designed rather to direct a special appeal to the layman in the aviation world."

The text largely centers around Forman's early explorations in China where he sold aircraft to the government and trained pilots. A fascinating and scarce book on aviation with an interesting Shanghai imprint.

. First American edition of this excellent and well-illustrated work on aviation by Santos-Dumont who was a pioneering Brazilian aviator at the turn-of-the-19th- into the 20th-Century. The diminutive playboy and talented engineering machinist raced motorized tricycles Locomobiles and began building his own dirigibles and in 1901 piloted his Airship No. 6 sround the Eiffel Tower. In 1904 after publication of this work he began experimenting heavier-than-air aircraft building an unsuccessful helicopter in 1905 and in 1906 a biplane reminiscent of the Wright Flyer dubbed a “canard†by the French and in 1906 set the first aviation record in Europe. Brazilians like to claim he preceded the Wright Bros. because he made his first flights in front of huge public crowds but aviation experts and historians demur. The Century Co., hardcover‎

‎ORMER LOCKLEAR ARCHIVE‎

‎An archive of research and writing materials gathered for a biography of Ormer Locklear the daredevil aerial stuntman who was the first to change planes mid-air and died while filming the silent movie The Skywayman 1920. It took more than a decade for author Art Ronnie to research Locklear’s life and find a publisher for his book Locklear: The Man Who Walked on Wings 1973.

Born in Greenville Texas Locklear 1891–1920 became fascinated with flying when aviation pioneer Calbraith Perry Rodgers landed in a Fort Worth field to unclog a fuel line. With his brothers Locklear built gliders and later learned to fly after joining the U.S. Army Air Force in 1917 eventually becoming a flight instructor. He left the Army in 1919 and with two colleagues joined show promoter and manager William Pickens to form an aerial circus before he was recruited for the silver screen. In his personal life Locklear married Ruby Graves in 1915 but they separated in 1919 and thereafter she refused to grant him a divorce. After moving to Hollywood he became involved with silent screen actress Viola Dana who was at the airfield the night of the accident and witnessed his death. One of the key items in this archive is a scarce original poster for Locklear’s first feature film The Great Air Robbery Universal 1919. After watching one of Locklear’s aerial circus shows Carl Laemmle signed Locklear to a series of motion pictures. In this movie Locklear played Larry Cassidy a pilot for the U.S. Air Mail Service who defends a shipment of $20000 in gold from the villainous clutches of the evil Chester Van Arland Ray Ripley. The film made use of all the stunts that had made Locklear a household name as a barnstormer. The picture was a hit and Locklear was well on his way to a fabulous career on the silver screen. The stone lithographic posters measures 27†x 41†and features a portrait of the daring aviator. It is archivally framed with an acid-free mount and UV plexiglass. This film and The Skywayman are both considered “lost films†as no known prints exists in archives.

This archive also includes more than 300 hundred negatives and photographs of Locklear’s short life and career that were collected by Art Ronnie from Locklear family members newspapers movie studios and historical societies. Included among them is a framed 8†x 10†black-and-white photograph that is signed by Locklear who is wearing his military uniform. A second framed photograph from his Hollywood days includes a signature framed below the photo. Neither of these images have been inspected outside the frame. Ronnie was a meticulous record keeper. This archive includes copies of letters the author wrote to Locklearfamily members friends film studios libraries and historical societies. It includes two expandable folders containing copies of the more than 300 letters Ronnie wrote researching the book with the recipients’ responses attached. He began his research in 1961 while working at the Los Angeles Herald Examiner using the newspaper’s stationary with the intention of writing a magazine piece on spec.

After the initial article was published he decided to pursue a book and many of his later letters reflect the struggle to find a publisher. By 1962 he is using Twentieth Century Fox Television letterhead after having switched careers to be a publicist with the network. Among the early letters Ronnie wrote is one to Locklear’s sister Anita Mae Locklear who still lived in the family’s hometown of Fort Worth Texas. “Would you please write down anything you recall about Ormer – his personality his motorcycling and racing days any amusing anecdotes his first desires to fly his decision to come to Hollywood and his funeral which I understand was one of the largest ever held in Fort Worth.†In her return letter Anita shared a few facts: “He was flying with Pickens Flying Circus when the studio was interested and signed him up for the pictures.†Ronnie appeared to have the most success and the longest running correspondence with Locklear’s brother James who became the point person for the family. The two men corresponded excitedly after uncovering a copy of the Barron Field Review which contained a photo feature of “Locklear’s Class in Aerial Calisthenics.â€

Ronnie tracked down one of Locklear’s fellow aviators who recalled in a letter that Locklear was fearless and often got in trouble for aerial antics: “He liked stunts and thrills and experimented with crawling all over the plane which finally gave him the idea that he could change planes in the air.†Among the letters is a typed signed reply from the actress Mary Pickford who provides Ronnie with a contact to Charlie Chaplin and notes that her brother Jack and Ormer were good friends: “On the night that Locklear was killed my brother was scheduled to go up with him but mother had prepared Jack’s favorite dinner and as luck would have it the dinner was late.†Ronnie also chased down leads that didn’t pan out. He corresponded in 1961 with movie producer Robert Youngson about a rumor that Locklear was one of the stunt pilots involved in the unplanned mid-air collision of two planes during the filming of the Harry Houdini movie The Grim Game. “My own guess is that the stuntman on that wing could not possibly have escaped and must have been killed†Youngson wrote. The publicity machine around the 1919 film claimed Houdini was involved and escaped the crash but Ronnie’s research uncovered the fact that Houdini was nowhere near the planes. Miraculously his stunt double survived the crash with just a few cuts and bruises.

After working on the project for more than a decade Ronnie landed A.S. Barnes as a publisher. One of the folders in this archive contains dozens of rejection letters he received from publishers between 1962 and 1971 when he signed his publishing deal. For the first several years he was represented by literary agent Carolyn Willyoung Stagg of Lester Lewis Associates. After receiving feedback from Holt she wrote the following in January 1962 to Ronnie: “Are you at all interested in doing a couple of consecutive chapters which will be less ‘journalistic and slap-dashed style’ and will get down the essential motivation and characterization which made Locklear a colorful figure†In 1969 Barnes rejected Ronnie’s manuscript but decided to move forward with it in 1971. He was paid a $250 royalty advance. Once the book went to press Ronnie pushed the publisher about its promotion and sales strategies taking on much of the public relations campaign himself calling in favors and urging those he knew in the media to mention his book. He seemed less impressed with Barnes’ sales efforts writing to Julien Yoseloff of Barnes in October 1973: “When a book has received the publicity Locklear has I believe it behooves the publisher to let the booksellers know about it…I believe the publicity Locklear has received in very unusual. In addition to reviews more than 800 newspapers have mentioned it and excerpts have appeared in eight magazines.†Ronnie’s personal copy of the book is included with the archive. It contains his bookplate and is inscribed by Viola Dana and her sister Shirley Mason also an actress from the silent film era. This copy is also signed by Jimmy Doolittle who provided Ronnie with an opening quote for the book.

The materials including several typescript versions of the book in this collection are stored in three banker boxes and all the materials are in very good condition. This archive provides a complete record of an important early aviator who transitioned into movie making. In addition it is an important writers archive demonstrating how original research is developed and the evolution of a book as well as its printing and promotion. Please inquire for a complete inventory of this archive. unknown‎

‎[AVIATION] WYKEHAM, Peter‎

‎Santos-Dumont; A Study in Obsession‎

‎London: Putnam 1962. First U.K. Edition. Octavo. 22cm. Publisher's black and white speckled cloth titled in gilt to spine. Dustjacket. 278pp. Some minor bumping to spine ends and corners clean and tight; internally clean and fresh red endpapers red topstain some spotting and soiling to page edges; in a strong lightly sunned dustjacket with some light scuffing and soiling to the white rear panel some fading to the spine panel and a couple of cosmetic nicks to the extremities. A very good copy.

A biography written by Air Vice Marshall Wykeham of the RAF no stranger to risky aeronautical adventure himself of the eccentric intrepid and influential Alberto Santos-Dumont. A Brazilian aeronut first inspired by the ill-fated Andree balloon adventure to the pole but then branching out into the design and flight of a number of prototype fixed wing aircraft. Santos-Dumont is considered by many to be arguably the first man to fly a powered aeroplane but his work was beaten to the punch by the Wright Brothers who were considerably less erratic a circumstance which bedevilled Santos-Dumont for the remainder of his life. A much neglected personality in the field of aeronautical design exploration and development. Putnam unknown‎
