Nuri Demirag (born 1886 in Divrigi - died 1957 in Istanbul) was an early Turkish industrialist. He was one of the first millionaires of the Turkish Republic. His first enterprise was the production of cigarette paper. Demirag then invested his capital in the development of the Turkish railway network. Because of this investment, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk gave him the surname Demirag, which translates as "Network of iron". In 1936 he started an aircraft factory employing 500 people at Besiktas, Istanbul (later nationalized by the government and now occupied by the Istanbul Naval Museum). Construction of the Nu D.38 twin engine high wing light transport followed. In 1946 he founded the first opposition party, which was named Milli Kalkinma Partisi (National Development Party), but his party was dissolved in 1958. He was elected deputy of Sivas for the Democratic Party as an independent candidate in 1954. Demirag donated his aircraft to his flying school (Gök Okulu) in Yesilköy, created to interest young Turks in aviation. The land upon which the school was built was later nationalized by the Turkish government and is now the Atatürk International Airport. Demirag died in 1957 from diabetes.‎

‎En juin 1940, Pierre Mendès France, lieutenant aviateur, s'embarque à Bordeaux sur le Massilia pour suivre son unité militaire repliée au Maroc et continuer la guerre contre l'envahisseur allemand. Arrêté par les autorités de Vichy, il est incarcéré à la prison militaire de Clermont-Ferrand et condamné à six ans de prison, après une procédure mouvementée. Il s'évade le 21 juin 1941 et, après dix mois de vie clandestine en France, il s'engage dans les Forces aériennes françaises libres et effectue de nombreuses missions de bombardement avec le Groupe Lorraine . Cet ouvrage est le récit écrit sur le vif, en 1942, de son "voyage affreux à travers la patrie défaite, humiliée et asservie". De ce voyage – écrit l'auteur – j'ai rapporté quelques photographies qui sont un témoignage authentique et émouvant sur le choc du printemps de 1940 – depuis la scène politique jusqu'aux prisons où on entasse les patriotes. C'est aussi le récit d'une évasion pittoresque, de la vie clandestine quotidienne dans “la faim et le froid” – du réveil du pays et des débuts de la Résistance. — "C'est en pleine guerre, en 1943, que M. Pierre Mendès-France publia à New-York son livre “Liberté, Liberté chérie”, où il raconte dans quelles conditions il fut arrêté par le gouvernement de Vichy, jugé, condamné, comment il put s'évader de la prison où il avait été enfermé, et comment il dut vivre clandestinement pendant plusieurs mois avant de rejoindre à Londres le gouvernement de la France Libre. En 1939, M. Mendès-France a trente-deux ans. Il est député. Il a déjà été Sous-Secrétaire d'État dans le ministère Blum. Il a été antimunichois. Il est lieutenant de réserve dans l'armée de l'Air (...) S'il donne des analyses fort pertinentes de l'opinion française en ce début d'occupation, M. Mendès-France ne peut parler qu'avec discrétion et sans précision de son activité propre, puisque son livre fut publié en 1943, et qu'il ne pouvait compromettre les « résistants » qu'il avait vus en France après son évasion de la prison de Clermont-Ferrand. En fait, il entra en rapports avec des patriotes, put (grâce à des contrebandiers « désintéressés ») passer clandestinement de Thonon en Suisse, y prendre contact avec les consuls anglais et américains (les seconds plus favorables que les premiers), ainsi qu'avec quelques Français qui s'y étaient réfugiés (Marius Moutet, par exemple). Il traversa plusieurs fois le lac, effectua plusieurs missions de liaison, monta lui-même un réseau qui se révéla fort utile par la suite, prit des contacts avec des fonctionnaires civils et militaires et quitta, enfin, la France, en février 1942, en se mêlant (muni de vrais visas polonais obtenus en Suisse) à un groupe de Polonais qui traversaient les Pyrénées. De là, il atteignit Lisbonne, puis Londres, où il s'engagea dans les F.F.L. Versé dans le groupe Lorraine, il participa à plusieurs raids de bombardement avant de devenir, à la demande du général de Gaulle, « commissaire aux Finances » du Gouvernement provisoire d'Alger (novembre 1943). (...) Le texte de M. Mendès-France sur “Roissy en France, l'attaque de Chevilly-Larue par le groupe Lorraine, le 3 octobre 1943” est intéressant non seulement pour les précisions qu'il apporte sur le raid de Chevilly-Larue, mais aussi pour l'analyse des sentiments des aviateurs qui y participèrent. Son livre, “Liberté, Liberté chérie...”, est important pour tout ce qu'il nous apprend sur les événements de Bordeaux, sur l'affaire du Massilia, sur les intrigues marocaines au cours de l'été 1940, sur l'acharnement avec lequel Vichy a poursuivi, à cette époque, et Mandel et Mendès-France et tous les hommes qui représentaient les idées démocratiques et, enfin, sur l'état de l'opinion publique entre 1940 et 1942."
