Fine. - A white 3-5/8 inch high by 6-1/2 inch wide envelope is illustrated with an image of a bombed battleship & a rescue boat at Pearl Harbor titled "Commemorating World War II / 1941: A World at War" with an Atlantic Charter postage stamp. Signed "Lt/Col James W. Empey" on the address panel. Fine <p>World War II fighter pilot James W. Empey 1924-2013 became an ace at the young age of 20 when he shot down five German aircraft within a month in 1944. After the war he returned to the United States and became a training instructor. He subsequently attended the Air Force's experimental test pilot school and in 1962 was sent to Oklahoma State University to earn a degree in aeronautical engineering. He volunteered to go to Vietnam and flew missions throughout that war retiring from the Air Force in 1972 as lieutenant colonel. During his years of service he was awarded the Silver Star two Distinguished Flying Crosses and a total of 27 Air Medals. New York: Aviation and Aircraft Journal. Very Good. 1921. Ephemera. Included in the envelope envelope letterhead is from the Gardner-Moffat Co. Inc. is a duplicated letter from Major Lester D. Gardner the president of the journal advertising the new journal with price incentives and information on editors and contributors. Also included are two off-print articles from the new Journal: entitled: What $598090781 Bought in War Aviation and Cost of War Aviation Only $598090781. "Lester D. Gardner who would become known as one of aviation�s elder statesmen concluded both needs could be met at once. He elected to publish Aviation and Aeronautical Engineering a journal of technical record that would adhere to rigorous standards of scholarship. Gardner was well placed to do this. He had taken a degree in engineering administration from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1898 and had studied administrative law for a year at Columbia University in 1900. He possessed valuable connections in business government and the military and counted among his friends some of the best aeronautical minds in the country. Glenn Luther Martin who was to become one of the country�s leading aviation industrialists had urged Gardner to found an aeronautical engineering journal. For many years Martin would back the magazine with steady advertising support. Grover Loening who had been the first U. S. Army aeronautical engineer and would found a famous airplane company advised Gardner on policy and would be largely responsible for the editorial course the magazine was to follow in its formative years. Together with A. Roy Knabenshue the pioneer balloonist Gardner had persuaded Orville Wright to rescue the Ood-damaged 1903 Kitty Hawk airplane from storage in Dayton Ohio. It went on public display for the first time in 1916 at MIT's new facilities in Cambridge only weeks before publication of the first issue of Aviation and Aeronautical Engineering." from Aviation Week network website . Group Of Four Aviation Photographs From 1910 Apparently from Flugfeld in Puchheim
Pucheim Germany. Very Good. 1910. Other. B&W Illustrations; This is a group of four small photographs 3.5" length x 2.5x height possibly on salted paper of airplanes flown at the Munich Air Race of 1910. The reverse of the photographs give basic descriptions including the place -- Puchheim and the Aviators. The grpou of for prints come with an autograph handwritten statement from the owner giving them to a friend for his aviation collection. The aviators include: Emil Jeannin Dr. Otto Lindpaintner and Gustav Otto. While Emil Jeannin is listed as one of the five pilots engaged for this race the other three aviators were apparently running in the same circles / groups and likely brought their planes with them. "The Munich "Akademie f�r Aviatik" was founded in 1909 mainly by members of the Royal Bavarian Automobile Club. Its main aim was promoting aviation particularly by flying dirigibles and other flying machines. This included building an airfield with all necessary installations but also creating a library and a museum and the awarding of prizes for competitions. Suitable grounds for an airfield were found in the village of Puchheim 15 kilometres west of central Munich where 76 hectares of moorland was bought and leased. A modern and completely equipped airfield with a two-kilometre race course was built. It was decided to celebrate the opening of the airfield by organizing an "aviation week" of five days in the end of May starting less than a week after the Berlin-Johannisthal spring meeting. Five pilots were engaged. Emil Jeannin Baron Pierre de Caters and Ellery von Gorrissen came directly from the Berlin meeting where the two former had been very successful. They were accompanied by Belgian Jules Tyck on a Bl�riot and local Munich man Simon Brunnhuber on one of the Antoinettes bought by Walther Huth who would later start the Albatros company." from Wikipedia . unknown

The brochure is in Very Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. There is some beginning rubbing to the spine and edges of the brochure. "The BAE Systems Hawk is a British single-engine jet-powered advanced trainer aircraft. It was first flown at Dunsfold Surrey in 1974 as the Hawker Siddeley Hawk and subsequently produced by its successor companies British Aerospace and BAE Systems respectively. It has been used in a training capacity and as a low-cost combat aircraft. Operators of the Hawk include the Royal Air Force notably the Red Arrows display team and a considerable number of foreign military operators. Dated 1959 this brochure gives the history of Moffett Field starting with 1935 and going through the modern jets and supersonic airplanes including The F4D Skyray and the F11F Tiger. The brochure is in clean unused condition. "The airport is near the south end of San Francisco Bay northwest of San Jose. Formerly a United States Navy facility the former naval air station is now owned and operated by the NASA Ames Research Center. Tenant military activities include the 129th Rescue Wing of the California Air National Guard operating the MC-130P Combat Shadow and HH-60G Pave Hawk aircraft as well as the adjacent Headquarters for the 7th Psychological Operations Group of the U. S. Army Reserve. Until 28 July 2010 the U. S. Air Force's 21st Space Operations Squadron was also a tenant command at Moffett Field occupying the former Onizuka Air Force Station.
