Avro (A.V. Roe & Company) was founded in 1910 and disappeared in 1963 when it was absorbed into Hawker Siddeley Aviation. Between these dates it flourished as one of the largest and most respected aircraft manufacturers in the world, creating RAF trainers during WWI, the Anson in 1935 and the mighty Vulcan V-bomber of the 1950s. Most famous of all, of course, is a bomber called the Lancaster.

Amongst the American built fighters to be operated by the USAAF in Europe the 56th FG joined the Eighth Air Force in Britain to undertake the escort role for the latter's growing B-17 bomber force in late 1942. Initial encounters with German fighters were not encouraging as the P-47 was easily outmanoeuvred at low to medium altitudes. However the arrival of the first P-47Cs in mid-1943 addressed the problem of the aircraft range and as combat tactics evolved performance improved and it was soon able to hold its own against the Luftwaffe fighters. .
