After flying training he received nightfighter instruction in Scotland before his first posting to 153 Squadron in Northern Ireland. During a combat mission over Sicily his Beaufighter was blown from the sky after being stuck by debris from an enemy aircraft. He was later posted to 456 Squadron RAAF and experienced success during the D-Day invasion and attained ace status shortly afterwards.
