Women in Aviation, Photography
Original Photo of Female Pilot a Testament to Women's Role in Early Aviation Circa 1920s
Women in Aviation. Silver gelatin print photo of female pilot sitting in early aircraft with her hands on the gears the body of the plane partially visible behind her. Circa 1920s. 4.75†x 6.5†inches. Legislative barriers as well as social and economic factors made it nearly impossible for women to participate in early aviation. Getting through flight school and gaining access to a plane to fly was a testament to the incredible tenacity and resources required for a woman to access both. Photo shows a woman sitting belted to pilot’s seat one hand on each large gear shift feet prepped on the thin ledge above the plane’s front tire. She wears a gingham hat cut close to her head a wool coat wool pants and knee-high leather boots with protective-wear covering the shins. The plane’s front tire is muddy suggesting she’s just landed in a field. A few ink spots do not obstruct the plane or female pilot. This original photo is evidence that women participated in early aviation. Overall good condition. unknown

4to., Revised and Best Edition, with very numerous photographs and maps throughout; blue cloth, gilt back, blue endpapers, a very good, clean copy in unclipped dustwrapper, the latter with one small closed tear at fold-in. This important work was first published by Hutchinson in 1961 and several times reissued; this edition incorporates text additions and amendments and extends the appendices. Crucially, the list of aircrew taking part in the Battle of Britain is completely revised in the light of fresh information on many of the participants. Scarce, especially in this condition. New York: Barnes & Noble Books 1999. 10.5" wide by 11.25" tall. Near Fine condition in Very Good Dust Jacket. No chips. No tears. No owner's name or bookplate. No remainder marks. No underlining. No highlighting. No margin notes. Bright and clean. Lavishly illustrated with over 250 photographs most in stunning full-color. Index. A history and colorful survey of aircraft nose art. Chapters are arranged by themes that have been used throughout the years by fighting airmen of all nationalities: Cartoon Characters; Sharks and Other Animals; Centerfold Pin-ups; Heroes and Villains; etc. Has an especially generous sample of the nose art from WWII American warplanes many inspired by the 'Girls' of Alberto Vargas and comic strips of Milt Caniff. From the Dust Jacket: "NOSE ART surveys the history of unofficial artwork from World War I to the 1991 Gulf War. It seems that as long as men have to fly aircraft into combat they will adorn their machines with such unofficial artwork. This survey of the genre is superbly illustrated with over 250 fascinating photographs mostly in color complemented by superb artworks of some of the most famous nose paintings. This book is a must for air enthusiasts and anyone interested in the thoughts and feelings of men at war.". Reprint of the 1992 original. Oversize Hardcover. World War II: Aviation
U.S. NAVY PRIMARY FLIGHT TRAINING MANUAL
Glenview IL: Naval Air Training Command 1945. First Edition. Wraps. Good . 4to. Illustrated wraps. Contemporary post binding added at left margin. Most paper lost from spine. Wrapper edges worn chipped. Internally clean sound. <br/><br/>An original illustrated manual issued to WWII Naval flight cadets training at NAS Glenview dated July 1 1945 to the title page. Generously illustrated throughout with dozens of original drawings likely the work of a single unnamed illustrator and photograph reproductions executed and lettered in a decidedly Seuss-ian style heavily influenced by modern cartooning lending a simplistic treatment to gravely serious and technical material. A portion of the "Safety" chapter on p. 29 with the exaggerated likeness of a pilot resting upon a cloud holding a harp wearing angel wings and captioned: "Don't try to be the 'hottest' pilot but try to be the 'oldest.'" and "There are bold pilots and there are old piltos 'But!' - there are no old bold pilots." Six chapters are broken into dozens of sections with titles like: Your Parachute Safety Inherent Stability Turns Normal Spins Landings Steep Turns Precision Immelmans Progressive Spins etc. The impact of the allied air campaign and skill of American pilots during World War II is seldom mentioned in modesty. This is a rare flight training publication and exceptional example of illustrative instruction. OCLC notes only 2 institutional holdings one at The Smithsonian the other in the aviation archives at Wright State in Dayton OH. None in commerce June 2015. 243pp. Naval Air Training Command paperback books

Columbus OH: np 1918. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. 4to. Cloth hardcover three ring binder. Holding 151 leaves; 110 holograph 41 typed. Many sheets loose from ring binding. Cloth torn at spine. Overall contents well preserved. <br/><br/>The classroom lecture notebook of an unnamed cadet at The United States Army School of Aeronautics at Ohio State University Columbus OH covering January through March 1918. During WWI a pilot shortage in the United States became apparent. In response the War Department and U.S. Army formed the Aviation Cadet Training Program installing aviation training schools at six universities across the country. This program at Ohio State appears to have consisted of 8 weeks of classes with training in military drill discipline and technical instruction with an emphasis on aviation. Curriculum from the program formed the basis for the aeronautical engineering courses later taught at OSU. A scarce set of materials from an early instructional program of military aviation training and education one that would eventually become the US Air Force. np hardcover books

Old folds lower right hand corner chipped not affecting text or signature otherwise a fine letter with a bold clear signature. 1p. on Sergievsky's personal letterhead. 8vo. A letter written by the renowned Russian ace and world record setting Sikorsky test pilot on behalf of Danish-born ballet and Broadway dancer Paul Haakon considered by many to be one of greatest ballet dancers of the 20th century. <br/><br/>Reading in part: "I have known Paul Haakon Longreen for over sixteen years. In the theatrical profession he is known under the name of Paul Haakon. It is very well known that he is one of the best dancers in the world. He gave up his dancing recently to become a flying instructor purely to serve his country. I sincerely believe that anything which could be done to facilitate his joining the United States Army Air Force reserve would benefit our war effort."<br/><br/>Despite Sergievsky's recommendation in our letter it seems Haakon never became a combat pilot during WWII and instead toured as an entertainer with the United Service Organizations.
