NEW and unread in near PERFECT condition only a tiny bit of very mild shelfwear to the cover -- like you sometimes find in any new book store. Flat uncreased spine. NO chips tears or fading. Bright and shiny. Square and tight. Pages are crisp clean and unmarked. Well illustrated with vintage WW2 photos and documents. The author Edward C. Carr flew 35 combat missions in a heavy bomber over Europe. Following is one of Carr's war stories from the book: "In 1943 the tour of duty with the Eighth Air Force was set at 25 missions. With the introduction of long-range fighter protection and the declining casualty rate the tour was extended to 30 then to 35 missions. When we arrived at the 381st Bomb Group in the summer of 1944 the tour of duty was set at 35 combat missions. After a taste of combat on our first few missions we became aware of how hazardous each mission was that even a milk run could result in casualties. Each of us kept count of our missions. I had a small pocket calendar and placed an X on the date of every mission. Approaching the end of the tour each of us had a tendency to sweat out each mission more than the last. I am sure each crew member remembers his last mission. I will never forget mine. The air crew with me on that last hazardous mission performed beyond the call of duty and fortunately I can now thank most of them. Dave Osborne the 381st Bomb Group British historian must be given credit. His diligent research and amazing record keeping has provided me with interesting details of my last mission and the names of the crew. They were: Copilot - Rod Layton; Navigator - Stuart Newman; Bombardier - Jim Barrett; Flight Engineer - Bob Pospisil; Radio Operator - Walt Doremus; Ball Turret - Leon Fahnestock; Waist Gunner - John Hoene; Tail Gunner - Joe Demski. On Feb. 14 1945 we were briefed for a strike deep into Germany. The 381st was to be part of a force attacking the railroad yards at Dresden. Chemnitz was the secondary target. I was assigned to fly Deputy Squadron Lead in B-17 number 43-38983 named "Fort Lansing Emancipator." Bob Roush in B-17G number 44-8196 was flying Squadron Lead. The take-off climb to altitude and formation assembly was routine. Over Germany however we ran into terrible weather. Visibility was very poor. It became difficult for the Squadron Lead to stay in formation with the group. Then we started to receive very accurate anti-aircraft artillery bursts within our formation. When you could see the bursts of flak but could hardly see the other planes in your formation you knew that the German flak batteries had you zeroed in on their radar. Our squadron the 533rd was in the trailing low squadron position of the group formation. The weather conditions had caused some formations to break up and stragglers from other groups tagged on to our squadron formation. Next we heard on the command set that the weather would not permit bomb runs at Dresden or at Chemnitz. We didn't know it at the time but our Group Lead having been instructed to bomb targets of opportunity had picked from the targets list the oil refinery at Brux Czechoslovakia. Without warning our Squadron Lead plane turned away from the group taking a more southerly heading. Procedure required that we stay in formation. After we had lost sight of the rest of our group the Squadron Lead plane lowered its landing gear as a signal that the pilot was relinquishing the Squadron Lead. Battle damage was making it difficult for him to control his plane. We moved forward in the formation and took over the Squadron Lead position. Being too far away to catch up with the group I asked the bombardier and navigator to check the target list and select a target of opportunity that we could attack. We were probably 100 miles south of our original course to Dresden. They recommended that we make a bomb run on the Skoda Armament Works at Pilsen Czechoslovakia. With the stragglers we had picked up our squadron may have totaled 20 aircraft. We made a successful bomb run on one of the largest munitions factories in Europe. The bombardier and the navigator had both done fantastic jobs getting us to the target and improvising a good bomb strike. We headed back to England. Flak damage caused us to feather a prop on one engine. By drawing more power on the other engines and making a slow descent we maintained air speed. After a while another engine was throwing too much oil and losing power. Our fuel supply became a concern. We considered landing at an airfield near Brussels but I believed we could get across the English Channel. Almost on empty over Ridgewell England we were losing power on a third engine when we entered the landing pattern. On final approach some crazy pilot tried to cut us out of the pattern but we couldn't risk a go-around. He pulled away when he saw our feathered prop. At the end of my last mission and longest-about nine and a half hours to have a close call on final was the last straw. Then at interrogation the intelligence officer would not believe that we had bombed the Skoda Plant at Pilsen. The Eighth Air Force Brass was worried that some aircraft may have bombed Prague which had been declared an Open City. Thank God we had good strike photos which when developed verified that we had bombed at Pilsen with excellent results. It had been a tradition in the earlier days at the 381st Bomb Group for a pilot to buzz the field making a fly-by on the deck when returning from his last mission. Occasionally a pilot would still disregard orders prohibiting this dangerous practice. Returning on my last mission I never considered the possibility of a buzz job. I guess I was too concerned about getting the plane on the ground in one piece. On the ground and taxiing to our hard stand the thought came to my mind that I would not have to fly from Ridgewell again. Reaching our hardstand I swung the plane around by touching the left brake as the throttle to the right outside propeller was advanced. I cut the engines the props stopped and then silence. It didn't sink in. This was the last time I would be at the controls of a B-17. As we climbed out of the plane for the last time the feelings I had cannot be described as elation - more a general sense of relief and well-being that I had made number 35!". SIGNED by the AUTHOR.
