Nigel Holden
Gerhard Fieseler : The Man Behind the Storch
Helion & Company UK 2017. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 304 pages. Boards have no wear rubbing or soiling. Dust jacket is in excellent condtion. Dust jacket is protected in clear plastic sleeve. Pages are clean and unmarked and in excellent condition. The Fieseler Storch is the most famous slow-speed aircraft of the Second World War. A remarkably versatile reconnaissance plane as well as a Nazi showpiece and diplomatic gift - and even in postwar British hands a tool in helicopter design - it was linked to some of the best-known personages of the conflict: Hitler Speer Rommel Mussolini Churchill and Stalin. Furthermore as Nigel Holden suggests in this first complete biography in English of Gerhard Fieseler its creator no other plane had a comparably equivalent role in that war. Making use of Fieseler's own autobiography and other material never reproduced in English Holden chronicles Fieseler's life against four distinct interlocking German contexts: the Reich of the erratic Kaiser Wilhelm II; the unloved years of the Weimar Republic; the Nazi era; and the anxious Federal Republic. He also traces Fieseler in the context of aviation development in the first 50 years of the 20th century. As a boy Fieseler was obsessed with aircraft and air-mindedness the idea of harnessing airpower for nation-building purposes; the First World War gave him the opportunity to fly for the Fatherland. In the 1920s he gained international fame as an aerobatics pilot - becoming world champion in 1934. His considerable earnings were invested in a small aircraft company which became under the Nazis who had ideas of air-mindedness of their own a favored supplier to the Luftwaffe. Fieseler's company became regarded as among the very best in Germany in terms of technical capability and the integration of Nazi ideals into factory life. Goring appointed Fieseler to his inner circle of Germany's top industrial leaders and during the Second World War his company manufactured under licence Messerschmitt 109s and Focke-Wulf 190s. Fieseler according to his own account was the driving force behind the development of the V1 which is widely regarded as the forbear of the cruise missile. Holden's biography argues that Fieseler may well have been a better fighter pilot than the renowned Richthofen and reveals some uncanny parallels between his life and that of Germany's greatest wartime aircraft designer Willi Messerchmitt as well as describing his time as an indicted war criminal and his subsequent quest for postwar respectability. Fieseler emerges as an audacious fighter pilot an heroic aerobatics pilot an inspiring industrial leader for a time a Nazi opportunist a not always reliable memoirist and an obstreperous old man who to the end blamed Hitler - and largely only Hitler -for provoking the Second World War. Bf110 vs Lancaster 1942-45
Osprey Publishing UK 2013. First Edition. Softcover. Near Fine. 80 pages. Covers have no creasing. Corners of covers are lightly bumped. Spine is uncreased. Pages are clean and unmarked and in excellent condition. Unable to conduct ground operations on the European continent until Allied strength was marshalled for a full-scale invasion the British government based its grand strategy in World War II on a protracted campaign of aerial bombardment of Nazi Germany's cities in order to bring the Third Reich to its knees. At the heart of this strategy were the emerging technologies of the heavy bomber combined with night-navigation and precision-bombing techniques. The RAF introduced the huge four-engined Avro Lancaster in 1942 and used it to spearhead this aerial offensive. In response the Luftwaffe created an elite nightfighter force based primarily upon the Bf 110 to counter the RAF bombers. Although the Bf 110 had failed miserably as a day fighter over England in 1940 it found its niche as a nightfighter. The Luftwaffe was quick to equip it with airborne radar that allowed it to intercept and destroy Lancasters over Germany. In turn the RAF adopted countermeasures such as the Monica rearward-looking radar to alert Lancaster crews to the approach of nightfighters. The Lancaster heavy bomber was equipped with rear and dorsal turrets that gave it some chance to drive off nightfighters employing the standard tactic of attacking from above and behind Quantity Available: 1. Boing B-52 Stratofortress : Warrior Queen of the USAF
Fonthill Media UK 2016. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 204 pages. Boards have no wear rubbing or soiling. Dust jacket is in excellent condtion. Dust jacket is unclipped. Dust jacket is protected in clear plastic sleeve. Pages are clean and unmarked and in excellent condition. The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress began her life at the Boeing Aircraft Corp back in 1946. She was the answer to the problem that General Curtis LeMay of the USAF was looking for: A BIG bomber. The B-52 in 1955 entered the service of the USAF and as of 2016 she is still in service and on active duty. The B-52 had lived through the Cold War being on alert 24/7 in case the Russian Bear stepped out of line. The B-52 saw service in the Vietnam War of which Operation Rolling Thunder became one of the monumental programs in USAF history. The B-52 went on to service in the deserts of the Middle East in Operation Desert Storm and later in Enduring Freedom and Afghanistan. Through all this the B-52 has stood for the many revisions from A to H that have been done to her massive airframe and her cockpit which is now an up to-date glass cockpit. Of the 744 that were built 85 of the 'H' model still remain in service. Her armament capacity is immense. 50 years of service and many battle scars later still the B-52 remains the Queen of the skies of War. Quantity Available: 1. Edges of covers have superficial edgewear and corners are lightly bumped. Spine is uncreased. Pages are clean and unmarked and in excellent condition. To fly through the air to harness the power and freedom of the birds. This was mankind's dream and desire most arguably since crawling out of the primordial ooze. It would be centuries before that dream would come true. Aviation itself has only been around in aircraft form since 1900. The first airplanes initially were crude machines without much use or perceived use. In a short 10 years after 1903 starting with World War I aircraft became very useful and integral to war efforts. A newer design would quickly replace and cause the prior design to become obsolete in a matter of months or within a year. This obsolescence of aircraft repeated during World War II and later during the Cold War Quantity Available: 1. Category: Aviation; ISBN/EAN: 9781925449068. Mosquito

Dust jacket is protected in clear plastic sleeve. Pages are clean and unmarked and in excellent condition. Enshrined in history as the 'wooden wonder' the de Havilland Mosquito was arguably the most beautiful aircraft ever built and also to fly. Loved and respected by its flight crew and opponents respectively it is one of the iconic aircraft of World War 2. Although originally designed as a bomber for the RAF its performance rivalled that of most fighters of the time and the Mosquito undertook a range of duties unsurpassed by any other military aircraft - daytime tactical bomber night-time high altitude bomber day and night fighter photo - reconnaissance and pathfinder. The original conception of the Mosquito was unusual - to make use of the spare capacity in Britain's furniture making industry to construct a wooden aircraft - but once the aircraft took to the skies it was an immediate sensation. It could carry a huge range of hardware yet keep speed and manoeuvrability and its construction gave it ruggedness and an ability to bring its crew home. The aircraft is associated with some of the most famous names of World War 2 - such as Guy Gibson and Leonard Cheshire - as well as some of the most daring operations of the war such as the low level daylight raids on Amiens prison in 1944. On the Gestapo headquarters in the Hague in 1944 and the Gestapo headquarters in Copenhagen in 1945. In addition the Mosquito flew thousands of everyday pathfinder bombing night fighter photo - reconnaissance sorties with great precision and a far lower rate of losses than most other aircraft. Combining 150 superb historical and present day photographs with in depth and descriptive content this title is sure to be a hit amongst aviation enthusiasts worldwide. Quantity Available: 1. Flight 232 : A Story of Disaster and Survival
Norton USA 2014. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 415 pages. Boards have no wear rubbing or soiling. Edges of dust jacket have light bumping. Pages are lightly tanned. On 19 July 1989 while United Airlines flight 232 wallowed drunkenly northwest of the airport at Sioux City Iowa hundreds of fire and rescue workers waited. The plane slammed onto the runway broke into pieces and burst into a fireball. The rescue workers did not move: nobody could survive that crash. And then people began walking out of the field lining the runway. Miraculously 184 of 296 passengers lived-138 unhurt. Laurence Gonzales interviewed dozens of the survivors of Flight 232. He takes the reader through the detective work that found the fatal flaw in an exploded titanium fan disk. More powerful still is the heroism he found: pilots flying a plane with no controls; flight attendants keeping their calm in the face of certain death; passengers sacrificing themselves to save others. Dust jacket is protected in clear plastic sleeve. Pages are clean and unmarked and in excellent condition. As chief test pilot for BAC in the 1960s Brian Trubshaw was closely involved with the Anglo-French Concorde programme and flew the supersonic aircraft on its maiden flight in 1969 remaining a key member of the test programme after the aircraft entered airline service in 1967. This close association with Concorde affords him his unique position in offering the inside story of the aircraft from the early days of its planning in the 1950s through design and pre-flight testing maiden flight and demonstrations to certification and airline service. He also covers many other aspects of the programme from the cripplingly high development and construction costs to sales and post-delivery modification. Dust jacket is protected in clear plastic sleeve. Pages are clean and unmarked and in excellent condition. Concorde is the only successful supersonic airliner that there has ever been. The product of collaboration between British and French aviation industries Concorde first flew in 1969 and entered service in 1976. By the time of it first commercial flight the high hopes for the aircraft's adoption by airlines across the world had evaporated. In the end only its home country's flag carriers Air France and British Airways operated the aircraft on scheduled services between London New York Paris Washington. The crash of one of Air France's machines and the drop-off in passenger numbers following the September 11th 2001 terrorist attacks signaled the end for Concorde. It was retired from service during 2003. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Aviation; ISBN: 1861266545. ISBN/EAN: 9781861266545. Inventory No: 19040152. 9781861266545 Crowood hardcover

Hurricane R4118 : The Extraordinary Story of the Discovery and Restoration of a Great Battle of Britain Survivor
Grub Street UK 2005. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 160 pages. Boards have no wear rubbing or soiling. Dust jacket is in excellent condtion. Dust jacket is unclipped. Dust jacket is protected in clear plastic sleeve. Pages are clean and unmarked and in excellent condition. One of Peter Vacher's great passions in life is restoring Rolls-Royce motor cars. In March 1982 he was travelling in India on research when quite by chance in the grounds of a northern university he stumbled on the rusting remnants of an aircraft. It was a British plane but unrecognizable. Peter was intrigued. Initially thinking it was a Spitfire he managed to get the serial number from which he obtained confirmation that it was in fact a Mark I Hurricane R4118 which had flown in the Battle of Britain! For years he did nothing but the fantastic idea of bringing it back to England and seeing it fly again stayed at the back of his mind. In 1996 he decided to act and made an offer to buy the remains. In 1997 the offer was accepted. There then followed six years of wrangling committees red tape Indian Air Force involvement and much patient lobbying before in 2002 Peter was given 24 hours to remove the plane. Then the truly difficult process began of restoration - a worldwide search for parts careful reconstruction flight testing and finally finally airborne again. This is truly an amazing story a dream come true documented in words and pictures as it happened. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Aviation; ISBN: 1904943071. ISBN/EAN: 9781904943075. Dust jacket is protected in clear plastic sleeve. Pages are clean and unmarked and in excellent condition. The scrapping of the Nimrod program has been one of the most controversial events in the military aviation world for many a year. For most of its operational life from 1969 to date its contribution to the defense of the realm and its role in offensive duties was of necessity often shrouded in secrecy. It was the 'eye in the sky' which was absolutely vital to a host of activities - from anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare to support of land battles throughout the world to the Falklands campaign to combating drug-running the Nimrod's unsung role was paramount. And now the UK is bereft of such a multi-tasking reconnaissance aircraft. The full story of the Nimrod and its significance now needs to be told. Tony Blackman who was there at the beginning test-flew nearly every aircraft and was at Kinloss on the very day the project was canceled has written this timely book Nimrod Rise and Fall covering every facet of its history its weapons system developments and its tragic accidents. He writes in an approachable way making technical subjects understandable but his conclusions will inevitably not be welcomed by everyone. Quantity Available: 1. The Swoose : Oyssey of a B-17
Smithsonian Institution Press USA 1993. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Fine. 212 pages. Edges of boards have superficial wear. Dust jacket is in excellent condtion. Dust jacket is protected in clear plastic sleeve. Pages are clean and unmarked and in excellent condition. The story of a famous Flying Fortress The Swoose recounts the history of the oldest surviving B-17 aircraft not only to have flown in combat during World War II but also to have fought from the very first day of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. It continued to fly as General George Brett's command ship in Australia and Central and South America until the end of the war and afterward. Like its namesake from a popular l94Os song "Alexander the Swoose Half Swan-Half Goose" the Swoose was a hybrid with a tail structure rudder and elevators from another aircraft and later with wings wheels and brakes from still other B-17s. Herbert S. Brownstein highlights the Swoose's pioneering flights across the Pacific from the United States its round-trip flight between Australia and Hawaii that broke speed records and its celebrity passengers including Lyndon B. Johnson General George Brett and Lowell Thomas. The Swoose recalls the dark days shortly after Pearl Harbor when a handful of men in their early-model B-17s fought vainly to halt the advance of the invading Japanese forces in the "backyard war" in the Philippines. During the first forty-four days of the war the Swoose and its counterparts in the 19th Bombardment Group shot down fifty fighters and sank or damaged sixty ships. Drawing on historic photographs and firsthand accounts of pilots crew members and passengers Brownstein chronologically follows the Swoose from its maiden flight in April 1941 to its last almost thirteen years later on December 5 1953 and then to its permanent home in the collection of the Smithsonian's National Air & Space Museum. Corwin H. Meyer
Corky Meyer's Flight Journal : A Test Pilot's Tales of Dodging Disasters - Just in Time
Specialty Press USA 2006. Softcover. Very Good. 254 pages. Covers have light creasing. Edges of covers have superficial wear. Spine is uncreased. Pages are clean and unmarked and in excellent condition. Designing high-performance military aircraft in the slide-rule era was challenging. Being the first person to fly these airplanes and expand an aircraft's flight envelope was often very frightening if not downright deadly. It is hard to believe that someone could really endure 22 years in this occupation plus another 30 years in the aircraft industry often leading the industry-wide transition from large too-complicated piston engines to doggy unreliable jet engines and from 300-mile-per-hour barn doors through slippery transonic and supersonic airframes. But this is in fact the truly remarkable v if not virtually unparalleled v life story of Corky Meyer. In an occupation and time which killed many if not most this man had the brains skill and good luck to meet every challenge that faced him and survive to tell his amazing story. It is a story that covers the most important era in the history of flight told by a man at the epicenter of the activity. Corky Meyer's Flight Journal is an electrifying tale of a very passionate and patriotic man his wife and family and of course his numerous sensational close calls as an experimental fighter test pilot. Richard A. Hoffman
The Fighting Flying Boat : A History of the Martin PBM Mariner
Naval Institute Press USA 2004. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 250 pages. Boards have no wear rubbing or soiling. Dust jacket has light creasing. Dust jacket is protected in clear plastic sleeve. Pages are lightly tanned. Detailing a proud chapter in naval aviation history former PBM pilot Richard Hoffman has written the first comprehensive history of Mariner operations. This versatile seaplane was first deployed in 1941 during the Battle of the Atlantic when it helped sink ten German U-boats. The following year it became a mainstay of the Naval Air Transport Service as the first aircraft to provide a vital link between Hawaii and the South Pacific. In combat Mariners participated in every major offensive campaign from the Marianas to Iwo Jima and Okinawa sinking enemy submarines ships and aircraft. They also served as the main rescue aircraft saving hundreds of airmen and seamen in spectacular open-sea rescue operations. At war's end they were the first aircraft into Tokyo Bay. Yet the Mariner has long been overshadowed by its famous counterpart the PBY Catalina. This book corrects the oversight by recognizing the Mariner not only for its contributions to World War II but also the postwar years when it was involved with the exploration of the Arctic and Antarctic and the Korean War. Hoffman offers dramatic details of PBM fights with Chinese MIGs and patrol and reconnaissance missions. The author also highlights the seaplane's hazardous rescue missions with the Coast Guard and its service with foreign armed forces. Striking photos of Mariners in action accompany the narrative and a list of all PBM casualties is appended. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Aviation; Military & Warfare. ISBN: 1591143756. The Avro Manchester : The Legend Behind the Lancaster
Fonthill UK 2015. Second Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. 509 pages. Boards have no wear rubbing or soiling. Edges of dust jacket have superficial wear. Dust jacket is unclipped. Dust jacket is protected in clear plastic sleeve. Pages are clean and unmarked and in excellent condition. This is the definitive account of the Avro Manchester based upon detailed research by Dr Robert Kirby. This new and greatly expanded edition follows on from Dr Kirby's original edition of 1995 containing 30 per cent of additional text and is richly illustrated with more than 200 black and white photographs. In the early dark days of the Second World War RAF Bomber Command was obliged to operate for 18 months deep into occupied Europe with the under-developed Rolls-Royce Vulture-powered Avro Manchester. It was the largest and only Allied bomber to use the Vulture operationally. This account draws out chronologically the airframe and engine development intermixed with personal experiences from pilots and other personnel. Early evolution was protracted and unrealistic multiple roles were abandoned. All flying surfaces required extension to provide an adequate flight envelope and progress was further set back by severe Vulture problems. Avro Manchesters entered squadron service without significant type-testing being undertaken and in the first eight months witnessed four groundings. Rolls-Royce themselves contributed this illuminating aspect.Eventually seven RAF squadrons using 202 Manchesters with 538 Vultures contributed 1260 sorties mainly day and night bombing and mining. A contrasted highlight is the stunning aircrew accounts fearful of weather flak and fighters but perpetually nursing and cajoling their temperamental Vultures through hostile skies. Through the narrative several threads reveal the ultimate wisdom of persisting with a type which ultimately blossomed into the 'war-winning' Lancaster. The book also included fascinating reviews of second line duties and six appendices provide essential reference. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Aviation; Military & Warfare. Joseph W. Rutter
Wreaking Havoc : A Year in an A-20
Texas A&M University Press USA 2003. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Fine. 258 pages. Boards have no wear rubbing or soiling. Dust jacket is in excellent condtion. Dust jacket is protected in clear plastic sleeve. Pages are lightly tanned. "Life" writes Joseph W. Rutter "was all fun and games with very expensive toys during those bright June days in 1944." Rutter was a pilot in the Army Air Force and the expensive toys were airplanes--A-20 nicknamed "the Havoc" for the damage they inflicted. He had just completed replacement crew training at Charlotte North Carolina. Shortly thereafter he was flying with the 312th Bomb Group from Hollanida New Guinea over Japanese targets and across "unexplored" areas and life became more serious. "Wreaking Havoc tells the story of Rutter and his friends at a time when the horrors of war were matched by the energy and enthusiasm of youth. In innocent and understated tones Rutter relates hijinks and daredevilry his training stateside his first mission large-scale raids on the Philippines and Formosa routine low-level attacks on Japanese positions crashes mishaps and the deaths of friends. With a wonderful eye for detail Rutter gives the reader a glimpse into not only the air war in the Pacific but also the culture of the 1940s and the minds of the young men who found themselves far from home on the front lines. In Rutter's story of war the A-20 is as much a protagonist as the author. If the aircraft emerges as a pilot's plane--a joy to fly--it could also be a temperamental machine whose landing gear might collapse whose hydraulic system might fail and whose controls might suddenly malfunction. Rutter and the men who crewed the planes are quiet heroes whose approach to war combines the nonchalance of youth and the seriousness of men who have come close enough to death to take life seriously. From the pages of his memoir Rutter speaks to those interested in aviationWorld War II and the coming of age of a young man. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Aviation; ISBN: 1585442895.
