Tales of an entire squadron of war-birds from 1942 still sitting on the ice in Greenland were passed from one pilot to another. On a jaunt to the far north in 1980 two pilots from Atlanta Georgia heard the story and decided to look for the lost planes. What began as casual curiosity soon became a twelve-year adventure and a multimillion-dollar obsession. Here is the gripping true story of how perseverance triumphed over seemingly impossible odds in pursuit of a dream." Slight bump at top of spine very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. London: Brockhampton 1999. 256 pp large 8vo 9 7/16" H. B&w photographs. "Provides the first clear fully-documented view of Manfred von Richthofen as an air-fighter exemplary leader and an important figure in the development of German fighter units and tactics in the First World War. It was made possible by extensive research and with the end of the Cold War the release of significant documents in eastern Germany that had been unavailable to western historians since before the Second World War. It traces the development of German fighter aviation from the early single-aircraft aerial ambushes to the massed attacks of Jadgeschwader I the battle force that Richthofen developed into a highly effective weapon. 2 GROUP R.A.F. A COMPLETE HISTORY 1936-1945. RAF
Somerton Somerset: Crecy 1992. 532 pp large 8vo 9 1/2' H. B&w photographs maps. "No. 2 Group was formed in Bomber Command to support the Army. After equipping with Blenheims it specialized in daylight operations. It engaged in the first raid of the war. After taking part in the Norweigan campaign it was thrown into the struggle to save France. Heavy losses ensued during operations demanding great courage. A hazardous anti-shipping campaign took the Group to Malta. Night intruder operations were made against airfields and fighter-escorted attacks on Occupied Territory continued until the 1944 Allied landings in France where support to the invasion was subsequently given and an effective night interdictor campaign carried out. The Group mounted many spectacular operations particularly when using Mosquitoes. This is indeed a story of immense courage. Based upon records maintained by Royal Air Force Commands Groups and Squadrons together with personal accounts by those who flew with the Group the book gives a detailed day-by-day picture of operations their planning and execution illustrated with detailed maps. Appendices give plentiful details of the aircraft the squadrons and the Group's wartime effort." Book is Fine. Dust jacket is clean and bright. Hard Cover. Fine/Near Fine. Crecy Hardcover

Cambridge: Patrick Stephens 1984. 233 pp large 8vo 9 7/16" H. Pictorial endpapers many b&w photographs. "Beginning with a general description of a typical wartime bomber airfield this book goes on to relate in their own words the personal stories of several crews and their missions. The locales vary as do the targets the results and the nationalities of the raconteurs but the overall image is one of an Empire of bold young men treading where Goring boasted no enemy would succeed in treading. All the courage drama tragedy and indeed humour of war is contained in this compelling documentary which will appeal both to modern historians and enthusiasts as well as to those who remember the dark but strangely exhilarating days which it recalls." "The story of aerial photo-reconnaissance over Europe and the Mediterranean from bases in the United Kingdom is well known. Perhaps even more important in terms of strategy and mostly unrecorded was the job of the photographic squadrons in the Far East; to discover Japanese movements and intentions within a vast area 2000 miles across within which virtually no other Intelligence could otherwise be obtained. Flying through appalling weather conditions over some of the most inhospitable terrain in the world against an implacable enemy often in aircraft unsuited to the task and frequently unarmed the crews were until now the forgotten flyers of the 'Forgotten Army'." Erin Ontario: Boston Mills 2001. 160 pp 12 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs drawings/diagrams. "Through Dan Patterson's remarkable photography we get to see close up the cramped cold exposed turrets that so many young men fought and died in. The author examines the role each aircraft played in the war and veterans describe in spirited detail what it was like to fly and fight in the war's most renowned aircraft. For the first time in print 'Gunner' reveals not just the turrets of such famous aircraft as the Lancaster and the B-17 but also the rarely seen gun positions of aircraft such as the German Me 410 the Italian S.M. 79 and the Russian Il-2 Shturmovik. After a flying accident in which he lost his legs Douglas Bader was invalided out of the RAF. At the outbreak of war in 1939 he was recalled to the RAF and returned to flying. He fought in the Battle of Britain and later in nearly one hundred offensive fighter patrols. Follow-ing a mid-air collision he was captured and became a prisoner-of-war and was imprisoned in Colditz. The story of his war-time activities both in the air and as a POW is told in some detail and makes fascinating reading. He docu-ments the period between the wars when the Royal Canadian Air Force was officially founded through to the massive Canadian support in World War II the Cold War and to the present when detente means - perhaps unwisely - a reduction in air force personnel and units." ONE HURRICANE - ONE RAID.
Shrewsbury: Airlife 1990. 175 pp large 8vo 9 3/4"H. B&w photographs cutaway maps. "This the fascinating story of the discovery and subsequent unearthing of a Second World War Hurricane fighter aircraft. The book has two main parts. The first covers the author's introduction as a young schoolboy to a small piece of wreckage in the Essex coastal marshes. His early inquisitiveness leads to identification of the aircraft type and several years later to a recovery operation which retrieves the substanial remains from their muddy resting place. After a period of further investigation into the remains' identity together with some initial preservation work the aircraft is finally put on display at the Royal Air Force Museum Hendon. The second part of the book attempts to recreate the sequence of events during the raid which led to the aircraft's loss." Book is slightly cocked previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown. US NAVAL AIRPOWER: SUPERCARRIER IN ACTION.
Osceola WI: Motorbooks International 1987. 128 pp square 9 1/4" H x 9 1/4" D. Profusely illustrated with color photographs. "The aircraft carrier is many things apart from a ship. It is a floating airbase a symbol of power and a seagoing home to more than 5000 men. In fact the crew complement of a carrier is three times that of the biggest battle-ship of the 1940s. Every member of the crew from the captain to the commander of the air wing to the first-cruise enlisted man is trained in and works in the culture of naval aviation a culture that addresses the demands of survival in the world's two most unforgiving professions: seamanship and aviation. Watching some of the inhabitants of this small city gives some idea of the challenges they routinely face in their day-to-day work. This is an outsider's look inside. Renowned 'Time' photographer Neil Leifer went onboard USS Carl Vinson America's largest nuclear-powered carrier to photograph 'a day in the life of' feature. This is what he saw. Aviation specialist Bill Sweetman saw these superb graphic photographs and captioned them with near classified detail. So that every enthusiast avid or simply passing could draw interest and knowledge from within." Bump to top of spine light edge wear. THE ARROW.
Toronto: James Lorimer 1979. 160 pp 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The Arrow supersonic fighter appeared on Avro's drawing boards in 1952 and was in the air by 1958. Test flights were a great success and five aircraft had flown by 1959. Then came the dramatic decision whose rationale was not made public at the time and which even now seems obscure. The Arrow was cancelled and everything to do with it including the planes that had already flown was broken into scrap. Nothing was to remain. To tell the story of the Arrow James Dow explores the impressive experience of Canada's aircraft industry created from virtually nothing during the Second World War by C.D. Howe and recruits from the business world. Avro was put together when the government aircraft companies were sold off at the war's end. Avro's first postwar project was the Jetliner conceived in 1945 for Air Canada then TCA. It was very nearly the world's first passenger jet and was first in the air in August 1949 only days behind Britain's Comet. Avro's military experience came with the CF-100 Canuck fighter which flew first in 1951. There was even an experimental flying saucer built for the U.S. armed forces. The Arrow was to be the culmination of this experience and this success."
