‎Duke Neville. In collaboration with Alan W. Mitchell.‎

‎TEST PILOT.‎

‎London: Grub Street 1992. 195 pp large 8vo 9 1/2" H. First published in 1953 "This new edition has an additional chapter covering Neville Duke's flying life from that date and also has appendices and index not included in the earlier book together with a completely new selection of photographs." "The name of Neville Duke is well-known in aviation circles not only as a successful wartime fighter pilot but also as a peacetime test pilot with the Hawker Aviation Company. Joining the RAF at the beginning of the war he found himself as a young fighter pilot with the crack 93 Squadron at RAF Biggin Hill in 1941. Towards the end of the war he became an RAF test pilot and later a member of the RAF's High Speed Flight. This was the start of a successful career as a test pilot after leaving the Service in 1948 having been awarded the AFC. Working for Hawkers he became Chief Test Pilot and did all the major flight development on one of the most famous of all RAF peacetime aircraft - the Hawker Hunter and with it took the world speed record in 1953. Injured in a Hunter crash two years later he was forced to leave Hawkers but continued to fly and later set up his own test flying business as well as becoming the personal pilot of Sir George Dowty. He is now a freelance and still a highly respected test pilot working on the Optica Fieldmaster and Firemaster aeroplanes." Book is Fine. ‎BUCK McNAIR: CANADIAN SPITFIRE ACE. THE STORY OF GROUP CAPTAIN R W McNAIR DSO DFC & 2 Bars Ld'H CdG RCAF.‎

‎London: Grub Street 2001. 179 pp large 8vo 9 7/16" H. B&w photographs Spitfire profiles. "Robert 'Buck' McNair came from Nova Scotia the second of three sons born of a mix of Scottish and German parents. As a young man he became interested in flight and was lucky enough to be able to fly floatplanes off the Canadian lakes. When war came he went through flight training in Canada sailed to England and in the summer of 1941 found himself in the newly formed 411 Squadron RCAF. Eventually this unit began flying sweeps over Northern France and he saw his first combat actions during that autumn. An aggressive fighter pilot he was chosen by his Canadian CO to accompany him to the besieged island of Malta in the spring of 1942 to coincide with the arrival on that island of the first Spitfires." McNair went on to win three DFCs and a DSO among other awards and although he was twice wounded his score of victories reached 16 "with others probably destroyed and damaged. This is a remarkable story of courage and heroism by one of the Second World War's top-scoring fighter pilots who inspired his men and fellow pilots in actions above the skies of France and Malta and who despite being almost blind in one eye continued to lead and spur his men onto greater actions." ‎Ivelaw Chapman John. Sir Ronald Ivelaw Chapman.‎

‎HIGH ENDEAVOUR: THE LIFE OF AIR CHIEF MARSHAL SIR RONALD IVELAW-CHAPMAN GCB KBE DFC AFC.‎

‎London: Leo Cooper 1993. 164 pp large 8vo 9 7/16" H. B&w photographs. "Sir Ronald Ivelaw-Chapman was a remarkable man who had the good fortune to be born in an era when his particular talents were allowed to develop to the full. Just old enough to take part in the earliest days of aerial combat in the First World War he was in uniform until well after the jet engine had taken command of the skies. His son John who has edited his memoirs makes clear that Sir Ronald was a typical Edwardian English Gentleman. This he explains is vital to the understanding of the man. The moral precepts of the Edwardian era remained with Sir Ronald throughout his life and if some of them seem stiff and outdated in these more relaxed days they certainly sustained him throughout a long and adventurous career. The book not only covers the most vital years in the development of the RAF in which Sir Ronald played a significant part but is also packed with drama at high level. Not many Englishmen let alone future Air Marshals were ever under sentence of death at the orders of Sir Winston Churchill himself. Sir Ronald has been well served by his editor. His son is never blinded by filial respect and as he served in the Royal Air Force himself he is familiar with the Service background. He is also qualified to explain what it was that made his father and the military men of that generation a unique band of Happy Warriors whose loyalty and service to the British Crown is already a fading memory." ‎WELLINGTON WINGS: AN RAF INTELLIGENCE OFFICER IN THE WESTERN DESERT.‎

‎Somerton Somerset: Crecy 1992. 282 pp lg 8vo 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs maps. "The author was a squadron and wing intelligence officer and kept long and detailed diaries of the day to day life in the Desert Group and on these the book is largely based. The result is a vivid and realistic picture of the Desert atmosphere; he communicates the tenseness during the nights when the Wellingtons were away on missions the crashes the accidents the debriefings and the dreaded sandstorms. He recaptures the excitement of the perilous operations some of which he flew on himself as well as the lighter moments during stand downs and leave periods. This is an outstanding contribution to aviation history conveying as it does not only individual heroisms but the corporateness of a squadron in wartime." Book is Fine. "Joining the RAF in 1938 Finucane made a poor start to his flying career and was not flying operationally till the Battle of Britain when every pilot was needed. Posted to 65 Squadron for the Battle of Britain he went on to become a flight commander with the first Australian squadron in Britain 452 where his qualities of leadership quickly became apparent. It was with them that he scored his most spectacular successes in the circus sweeps on the French coast. In January 1942 he became squadron commander of 602 Squadron and at the time of his death was Wing Commander Flying Hornchurch. When he disappeared after ditching in the Channel in July 1942 he had destroyed 32 enemy aircraft and had established an outstanding reputation for tactics and flying skill." Book is Fine. ‎TORPEDO LEADER.‎

‎London: Grub Street 1992. 206 pp large 8vo 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs map. "A first-hand and very personal story its lucid exciting and readable narrative describes firstly the author's frustration as a Staff Officer in Cairo then more significantly his triumphs and disasters as a Beaufort Flight Commander on anti-shipping operations from Malta in that crucial summer of 1942. Fighting uphill battles against 'the powers that be' Gibbs remained utterly dedicated to the airborne torpedoes as a weapon of war against shipping and succeeded in changing not only tactical but also strategic policy - very rare indeed for a junior officer. But his book also gives new insight into the often haphazard way war was waged in the Mediterranean the daily dangers the inveitable losses." Book is Fine. ‎FLYING COLORS. FEATURING OVER 1300 MILITARY AIRCRAFT MARKINGS AND COLOR SCHEMES.‎

‎London: Salamander 1997. 207 pp 4to 12" H. Profusely illustrated in colour. "Military aircraft have been variously daubed cunningly camouflaged boastfully personalized or otherwise extravagantly colored since they first took to the air more than 80 years ago. From the time that the identity of aircraft was established with national insignia the markings of aircraft has become a science and their decoration an art form. At times of tension trends have been toward camouflage colors for concealment as international relationships deteriorated. Yet in peace and war there have also been 'anti-camouflage' color schemes applied specifically to render aircraft more conspicuous for training rescue and other purposes. 'Flying Colors' is a superb survey of this fascinating scene depicting more than 100 different aircraft types from the World War I Spads to the modern swing-wing Tornado in more than 1300 spectacular illustrations. Splendid use is made of finely detailed profile drawings top and bottom head-on and 'scrap' views together with emblem and other detail enlargements all in full-color and each extensively researched by the compilers and artists who have striven for accuracy and interest. Each first-class drawing is described with identification of squadron unit theater and period and often even the pilot's name and rank too! Recognized as a major landmark in aviation publishing this volume will especially delight aircraft modelmakers and all enthusiasts of the dramatic history of warplanes." Book is Fine. ‎NOT PEACE BUT A SWORD.‎

‎London: Grub Street 1993. 256 pp large 8vo 9 7/16" H. B&w photographs. "After a short spell in a light bomber squadron flying Hawker Harts Gibbs was transferred to the Fleet Air Arm serving on the aircraft carriers 'Furious' and 'Courageous' mastering the Shark and Swordfish. Another move took Gibbs to Gosport as a flying instructor before he eventually joined a torpedo squadron. His readable and entertaining narrative describes a rapid and eventful progression from cadet to Flight Commander of a Beaufort squadron whilst also giving a clear impression of the society he lived in and the RAF itself struggling to come to terms with the dramatic changes war wrought upon a once peaceful country. Also illustrates Gibbs' increasing dedication to the airborne torpedo as a means for attacking coastal shipping. His articulate account - the vivid impression of a young airman at war - conveys a clear picture of the evolving tactics of Beaufort squadrons as they adapted swiftly to changing circumstances and demands." ‎MYNARSKI'S LANC: THE STORY OF TWO FAMOUS CANADIAN LANCASTER BOMBERS KB726 & FM213.‎

‎Erin Ontario: Boston Mills Press 1989. 192 pp 4to 11 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers b&w and colour photographs reproductions. "This book is a combination of stories about the Canadian Avro Lancaster bomber. It is a description of those planes built in Malton Ontario by the Victory Aircraft Ltd. and the lives of two aircraft in particular. The first story is that of KB726 now known as the Mynarski Memorial Lancaster and its crew. This was the aircraft in which Andrew Mynarski earned his Victoria Cross for valour. He gave his life in so doing. The second story is that of FM213 its history and the story of how it was acquired by Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum and how with dedication and the enthusiastic help of the Lancaster Support Club it has been restored to flying condition. It has been given the identity KB726 and dedicated in honour of P/O Andrew Mynarski V.C. his crew and all Canadian flyers who sacrificed so much in the cause of peace more than 44 years ago. The story is related in three major parts: the Lancaster and Mark X bombers in general; the Canadian No. 6 Group and its squadrons with special emphasis on the crew of KB726 VR.A of No.419 Squadron Moose who on that fateful night of 12/13 June 1944 survived to tell their story; and special documentation of the 9-year restoration program of Lancaster FM213 to its first flight after 24 years in retirement - the only flying example of this aircraft on the North American continent." ‎FLYING SQUADRONS: A GRAPHIC HISTORY OF THE U.S. ARMY AIR FORCES.‎

‎New York: Duell Sloan and Pearce 1942. 234 pp 9 3/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Combines rare and startling pictures with a thoroughly authoritative text to tell the story of the 'Flying Squadrons'. Johnston points out how from the very earliest flights of man people foresaw the military possibilities of aviation: Franklin in his letters after he watched the Montgolfier ascensions; Napoleon in his Egyptian campaign; the Danes during the Swedish conflict of 1830. Briefly but penetratingly he tells the story of the early twentieth-century experiments and of what happened to aviation in the first World War. He shows what position of our air power was in 1919 and how that position changed in the Twenties and Thirties: experimentation discouragement retrogression new ideas organization the attitude of the army leaders of government leaders of industry. Finally he presents the whole picture of our Army Air Force as it was constituted on December 7th 1941. He describes all types of airplanes that have been developed - the interceptor and convoying pursuit plane the light medium and heavy bomber the transports the reconnaissance liaison trainer planes. He then tells of the make-up of Army Air Force personnel and of the training courses. He gives data on the size of our Air Force on the programs mapped out on lessons learned from the Nazis and from the British and how these lessons are being applied. Finally he presents the all-over strategy of our military aviation explaining where it is weak what it must plan for how it can be the keystone of victory." ‎GERMAN WARPLANES OF WORLD WAR II. COMBAT AIRCRAFT LIBRARY.‎

‎New York: Crescent Books 1983. 80 pp 12 7/8" H. Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs cutaways profiles and diagrams. At the outbreak of World War II "Germany had the finest air power in the world deployed in optimum formations and available in vast quantities. The German aviation industry surpassed the world in ingenuity and in production technique. The products were classic: Stuka dive-bombers Messerschmitt fighters Junkers and Dornier bombers. There were excellent seaplanes giant trans-ports observation aircraft and trainers. They were to develop rocket power and jets and at the time of their defeat they were on the brink of revolutionizing aircraft design. Indeed many of the post-war jets of America and Russia owed their origins to German wartime designs. This volume surveys the vast armada of German warplanes of World War II and illustrates the major types in brilliant color drawings and photographs with many technical descriptions and diagrams." ‎BOYS BOMBS AND BRUSSELS SPROUTS: A KNEES-UP WHEELS-UP CHRONICLE OF WWII.‎

‎Toronto: McClelland and Stewart 1982. 210 pp large 8vo 9 1/4" H. "They called them the 'Brylcreem boys' - the young flyers who streamed into England from the first declaration of war the kids with the jaunty grins and the willingness to take terrible risks. Among them were thousands of young Canadians many barely out of high school all delighted to leave behind humdrum lives in dusty post-Depression Canada for the irresistible chance to learn to fly and help beat the Germans. Doug Harvey was one of them - a nineteen-year-old from Toronto who joined the RCAF and in 1942 found himself a pilot in the elite Canadian No. 6 Bomber Group. Here is the fresh frank and often hilarious account of Harvey's experiences overseas. It is an unexpurgated description of what really happened to the group of young Canadian men who suddenly found themselves billeted in freezing Nissen huts in the lush English countryside - surround-ed by an unfamiliar people whose customs puzzled and delighted them - and charged with the job of bombing Gemany into ruins. It is the chilling story of crews flying through the silent night skies their lumbering Lancasters loaded with bombs headed for unseen desinations hundreds of miles away. It is the jubilant story of the boys who made it safely home mission accomplished and the heart-breaking story of the thousands who didn't." "A vivid pictorial presentation of aerial warfare from the first use of aircraft in war - Italian reconnaissance against the Ottoman Empire in 1912 - to the Armistice in 1918. In striking color the great individual battles of the aces come alive: Immelman von Richthofen Voss and Boelcke; Bishop Collishaw McCudden Ball and Beauchamp-Proctor; Rickenbacker; Guynemer Nungesser and Garros. And the dogfights and sorties; Bloody April and the Fokker Scourge; the Lafayette Escadrille the Storks the Flying Circuses; the bombing raids; the balloon busters. The trials of combat and endurance and the men and aero-planes that made it all possible changing the world's thinking about the methods of war. J.A. Phelan has created more than 400 superb paintings and drawings - executed with the drama and the meticu-lous detail of the artist who takes delight in his subject - for this richly illustrated book. The various aircraft of the Allies and Central Powers are shown in detail top and side views camouflage national markings and pilots' decorations engines armament and structure and in combat as they were flown by the aces. ‎THE LONELY SKY.‎

‎New York: Henry Holt 1957. 316 pp 8 3/8" H. B&w photographs. "The powerful and often thrilling story of a man who daily enters that lonely region beyond the speed of sound. A narrative of needle-nosed ships flying at blistering speeds it is also the moving testament of a man risking his life to push back the frontiers of scientific knowledge. Like St.-Exupery Bridgeman is capable of describing the vastness and beauty of the skies. But as America's foremost experimental test pilot he is constantly aware of the multitude of technical information which he is called upon to use at any given moment. After the war Bill Bridgeman left the Navy a restless man. Seeking action he joined Douglas Aircraft as an engineering test pilot. Soon he was asked to take over the final stages of the Skyrocket testing program. The Skyrocket a javelin-shaped experimental ship was a challenge to Bridgeman. The story of his day-by-day life with the plane is the substance of this book." ‎OPEN COCKPIT: FLYING PRE-WAR FIGHTING AND TRAINING AIRCRAFT.‎

‎London: Speed and Sports 1970. 77 pp 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "In 1930 when he was eighteen years old the author was granted a short service commission in the Royal Air Force and after completing the then one year's flying and ground subjects training he was posted to the famous 25F Squadron at Hawkinge. It was here except for a few months in the Fleet Air Arm that he spent the remainder of his five year commission flying Siskins and Furies both single-seater fighters. After completing a Central Flying School course he joined the De Havilland School of Flying as an instructor in 1935 and of the 120 odd pupils he taught to fly at Hatfield at least a couple were destined to become famous Battle of Britain pilots. Now forty years since he first soloed and after over 10000 hours flying on 104 different types of aircraft he seems very well qualified to discuss some of those long forgotten old 'planes that he flew before rejoining as a Flying Officer on the outbreak of World War II." ‎Dezarrois Andre editor. Translated from the French by Philip John Stead. Rene Mouchotte.‎

‎THE MOUCHOTTE DIARIES 1940-1943.‎

‎London: Staples Press 1956. 221 pp 8 3/4" H. Frontispiece. "This is the famous Rene who was transformed by three years of war from an unknown pilot of the Reserve into one of the great leaders of Free France in the air Pierre Clostermann's hero and commanding officer. In 1940 Rene made his daring escape from Oran in an unserviceable plane seized from under the very noses of the authorities. This was a flight not away from danger but into the thick of the Battle of Britain. He fought with the R.A.F. in Hurricanes and Spitfires attacking enemy shipping sweeping over France giving air-cover to the Dieppe landing duelling with the Luftwaffe. His exceptional courage and integrity his powers of leadership and skill as an aerial tactician quickly won the admiration of his superiors. Rene's airborne career culminated at Biggin Hill where he commanded the fighter wing and it was he who shot down the 1000th German plane recorded by the fighter group there shortly before his death. In the end his greatest wish was granted for he had written in his diary: 'If I am not to survive the war let me at least have the satisfaction of falling to the enemy's fire'. The personal magnetism and sincerity of 'Commandant Rene' make this an original and valuable contribution to the literature of the war in the air." ‎D-DAY: THE AIR BATTLE.‎

‎Ramsbury: Crowood Press 2004. 192 pp 10" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs reproductions maps/plans. "6 June 1944 saw the Allied invasion of occupied Europe - one of the riskiest military operations of World War Two. The part played by air power in the success of the operation was crucial. This was the greatest concentration of striking power ever seen: 12000 combat aircraft. Fighter-bombers such as the P-47 Thunderbolt and Hawker Typhoon bombed strafed and rocketed tactical targets with great accuracy while strategic bombers escorted by hundreds of fighters targeted bridges marshalling yards coastal guns and military stores. Other aircraft flew sophisticated decoy operations and hundreds of transports dropped paratroops or released gliders. In this the only full-length book on the subject Ken Delve examines the air campaign from the pre-invasion bombing strategy that prepared the battlefield to the massive air effort that accompanied the actual assault and the air umbrella during the vital weeks following the landings. Originally published in 1994 it has been substantially enlarged re-illustrated and completely reset providing comprehensive coverage of this vital air campaign." Small bump at top of front hinge. ‎PICTORIAL HISTORY OF THE LUFTWAFFE.‎

‎Osceola WI: Motorbooks International 1991. 168 pp 10 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Here was a force that in six short years rose almost from nothing to become the terror of Europe. It was the Luftwaffe that made possible the lightning victories of the German Army during the first three years of the war. Then gradually but inexorably the air forces of Germany's enemies became stronger than her own and the Luftwaffe was forced on to the defensive on each front in turn. Finally the vast majority of its aircraft grounded for want of fuel many of its best crews dead or in prison camps the greater part of it could do no more than sit on the ground and wait for the end to come. But as long as the war lasted the Luftwaffe could never be ignored in the Allied calculations for to the very end it proved capable of springing uncom- fortable surprises. Here is a step by step history of Hitler's Air Force presented in picture. To re- search the photographs and text the author visited many of the German senior officers who survived. The result is a unique and objectively precise account of the birth life and death of the Luftwaffe." Minor wrinkle at top of spine. "Describes the deveopment and careers of the last of the fighting biplanes the little Gloster Gladiator which carried something of the First World War into that second epic struggle; that indomitable trio of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps fighters the Wildcat Hellcat and Corsair which destroyed the myth of Japanese aerial invincibility founded by the Zero-Sen; the fighter versions of the Junkers Ju 88 whose nocturnal depredations in the R.A.F.'s bomber stream over the Third Reich were so impressive at one period of the War that the abandoning of large-scale night attacks on German targets was seriously considered; the highly manoeuvrable Macchi C.202 Folgore with its beautifully co-ordianted controls - a pilot's aeroplane in every respect; the Japanese Army's equivalent of the Zero-Sen the Nakamima Ki.43 Hayabusa and its successor the Ki.84 Hayate which could out-climb and out-manoeuvre the most advanced versions of the Mustang and Thunderbolt; Heinkel's superlative He 219 night fighter which but for ministerial muddle and confusion would have provided the Allies with some serious headaches. With crews flying 25 mission tours but aircraft flying until destroyed or replaced there is clearly much scope for following a Fortress from manufacture through to eventual demise and recounting the many and varied actions and exploits along the way. ‎Williams Geoffrey. Foreword by Sir Michael Beetham.‎

‎FLYING THROUGH FIRE: FIDO - THE FOGBUSTERS OF WORLD WAR TWO.‎

‎London: Grange 1996. 228 pp 9 3/4" H. B&w photographs drawings/plans. "In the early years of World War II RAF bomber crews who frequently endured the opposition of German nightfighters and flak returned home only to discover their airfields completely fog-bound. Desperately short of fuel and often disabled by severe battle damage the many crashlandings that resulted took a savage toll in valuable aircraft and crews. Prompted by Winston Churchill the challenge to overcome this deadly hazard was taken up by the government's Petroleum Warfare Department and the result was the development of FIDO - Fog Investigation and Dispersal Operation. Lines of burners fuelled by thousands of gallons of petrol were installed beside the runways to literally burn the fog off the airfields thereby allowing aircraft to take-off and land in relative safety. This book portrays the early hair-raising attempts to produce fog-free airfields. The eventual result was a countrywide FIDO system at fifteen British airfields covering most RAF and USAAF frontline Commands. By the time of the Ardennes Offensive in the winter of 1944 FIDO enabled over one thousand Allied aircraft and crews to make safe landings despite dense fog over Britain and the Continent. Book is lightly cracked between pages 116/7 - pages holding firmly minor wear at bottom corners. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling light rubbing a few faint line indentations on rear panel two tiny dents on rear hinge. Reprint. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. Grange Hardcover‎
