THE BOEING 247: THE FIRST MODERN COMMERCIAL AIRPLANE. THE FLYING CLASSICS SERIES.
TAB / McGraw-Hill Blue Ridge Summit PA 1991 first edition. 168 pp 9 3/16" H soft cover. ISBN 0830635939 B&w photographs drawings. "The introduction of the Boeing 247 in 1933 is widely regarded as the beginning of modern air transport. With an all-metal stressed-skin design and a cruising speed of 17 0 miles an hour the 247 marked the end of the slower flimsy wood-and-dope frame biplanes used by the military and mail service. Though quickly overshadowed by its competitors the 247 proved to the American public that commercial air travel c o u l d be both safe and efficient. In fact this innovative airplane determined the direction of aircraft design for nearly the next two decades. This books traces the evolution of the 247 describing the technological and social circumstan c es d ur in g and after World War I that led to its development. You'll find fascinating descriptions of William Boeing's struggle to implement his unique designs the public's reception of the 247 the aircraft's commercial and military uses an d the 24 7's ul ti mate impact on aviation." "Weaving his narrative around the detailed eyewitness accounts of aircrews groundcrews and those who built the Stirling t he author reveals the troubled life story of the Shorts' big bomber. Through the eyes of a factory worker at Queen's Island Belfast we witness the birth of one of the RAF's first four-engined 'heavies'. We climb the crew ladder follow th e s k i p per up the long dark fuselage to the cockpit and fly with him and his crew on one of the first Stirling raids over Germany. Lie on your belly in the bomb aimer's position as the skipper dodges flak and fighters at low level: 'We crossed th e e ne my c oast at Wilhelmshaven and were soon flying at low level between two of the Friesian Islands - the guns on each island appeared to be firing horizontally or down at us.' Sit in on a top secret briefing for an SD Stirling crew at Tem psf or d and fl y w ith them to a DZ 'somewhere in Occupied Europe' to deliver their 'Joe'. Freeze in the biting East Anglian wind with the groundcrews on dispersals as they try to change an exhaust manifold: 'The Bristol Hercules engines were su perb - the re w as v irtu ally nothing to leak from them. But it was a long way down to the ground if you slipped on the wings.' "With the British air defence system supreme by day the Luftwaffe turned to concentrate their attention towards nocturnal bombing missions on major cities and ports. For this purpose they perfected the technique to become known as 'pathfinding' - the illumination of the target area by a special force as a forerunner to an intense bombing raid. This vital role was to be played by Germany's best known bomber unit Kampfgruppe 100. Within a detailed and full history of this unit from 1939 until 1941 comes a fascinating account of its operations over Britain as night after night German bombers went about the systematic destruction of Britain's major cities." Orion New York 1988. 160 pp small 4to 10 13/16" H hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0517568640 Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photographs. "A pictorial history of one of the world's greatest airplanes. Great not only in terms of numbers built and surviv ing but in the affection generated by this amalgam of wood wire and tube which has been responsible for training unknown thousands of airmen during more than half a century of uninterrupted operations. The Tiger Moth was born from the neces s i t y t o continue development of de Havilland's ubiquitous Moth family. Legends surrounding the development of the first DH82 have been embellished with the passage of time. In a Stag Lane shed stagger and sweep were said to have ben determin ed b y pe n ci l calculations on the proverbial envelope while DH60G rear spars were shorteded with a handsaw. Following taxi trials lower mainplane dihedral was added adjusted to the length of the grass. The Tiger Moth has been privy to fifty yea rs of av ia tio n development. During her operational life she has seen wooden biplane airliners evolve into stainless steel projectiles carrying passengers faster than a rifle bullet. The Tiger Moth was conceived as a training aircraft a ro le t o w hic h sh e w as a nd continues to be admirably suited but as the photographs in this book illustrate she has been adapted to almost every aviation situation possible to imagine. The aim of this book has been to present a balanced revie w of the life and time s of the Tiger Moth from the early thirties to the present day with a hint of the future added for good measure." "During its ten years as the Luftwaffe's standard fighter the Messerschmitt Bf 109 had to adapt to keep up with the rapid pace of technological developments and the various operational demands which were placed upon it. The result was a multiplicity of variants and few aircraft appeared in as many variations as did the Bf 109. A significant n umber of publications have attempted to come to grips with this multiplicity. This new work stands out through its methodology which has led to new and different results. Supported by a large number of mostly until now unpublished photogra p h s o f the Bf 109 selected from more than 20000 and detailed line drawings this book offers a concise overview of the later versions of the Bf 109 based on the latest known information. This presentation is based not just on well-known pub li ca ti o ns a nd handbooks but on unknown material as well - in particular the loss reports submitted by Luftwaffe units as well as extensive factory and RLM records. It has been possible to gather details of more than 21000 machines from the se rec ord s de tai ls which have enabled the authors to correct errors present in existing publications." SUPERMARINE ATTACKER SWIFT AND SCIMITAR. POSTWAR MILITARY AIRCRAFT: 7.
Ian Allan Shepperton Surrey 1992 first edition. 112 pp large 8vo 9 1/2" H hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0711020345 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs drawings/diagrams. "The name Supermarine is universally associated with the Spitfire an aircraft which helped to defeat the Luft waffe during the Battle of Britain; the company's fundamental role in the development of Britain's military jet aircraft is less well known. Although now overshadowed by the success of the Hawker Hunter and of the BAC Lightning the Supermari n e A t t acker Swift and Scimitar were among the most influential of Britain's post-war military aircraft. The Attacker first flown in 1946 was the first jet fighter to be standardised on for squadron service with the Fleet Air Arm. The Attac ke r w as f ol lowed by the Swift. The first of this type of jet interceptor flew in 1951 and was introduced to squadron service in February 1954; it thus gained the distinction of being the first swept-wing jet fighter to enter service with the R oya l Ai r F orc e beating the Hawker Hunter by several months. The teething problems apparent with the Swift however ensured that it was the Hunter that was to go on to great success. Further success was to come to the Supermarine company with the S cim itar . A gai n destined for the Fleet Air Arm the Scimitar holds the distinction of being the first swept-wing single-seat jet fighter in service with the FAA as well as being the first FAA aircraft to be equipped to carry atomic weapo ns. Th e au thor narr ates the often dramatic history of these influential but now unfairly ignored aircraft. Forty years after the event the book will enable the aviation historian to appreciate better the importance of Supermarine's role in the dev elopm ent of Brita in's military jet aircraft." MESSERSCHMITT Bf 109: AIRCRAFT & LEGEND.
Hayns Sparkford Somerset 1989. 311 pp large 8vo 9 3/4" H hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0854297294 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs drawings/diagrams. "The Messerschmitt 109 has a place in the history of Second World War air combat equalled only by the Spitfire . In legend it epitomizes the aggressive vanguard of the bellicose Axis powers in reality it was a highly successful yet indisputably flawed aircraft often flown brilliantly to great effect and as often made impotent by its own inherent sh o r t c o m ings. In spite of this and because of the German Air Ministry's policy of type evolution rather than new model development the 109 remained Germany's foremost fighter and ground-attack aircraft for the duration of the conflict. By th e ce ss at io n of hostilities it had been developed through a staggering succession of types and variants for a host of - often unsuitable - roles and at one time or another would have been flown by every Luftwaffe fighter pilot. In this book th e a uth or ta ke s a detailed look at the aircraft in the context of its operational role and how that and the strategic progress of the war moulded its development. The story starts with the original prototypes and progresses through every on e o f th e 10 9's many ma rks and through every theatre of war in which they fought. Not forgotten are the multitude of associated design projects including the 209 309 409 509 609 and 155. In addition to the main text there are comprehensive app endic es de tail ing e ach of the variants their engines armament and equipment." Light bump to top of spine. SIX MONTHS TO OBLIVION: THE DEFEAT OF THE LUFTWAFFE FIGHTER FORCE OVER THE WESTERN FRONT 1944-1945.
West Chester PA: Schiffer 1991. 228 pp large 8vo 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs maps. "Covers the last chapter the decline and fall of the air defense of Germany at the end of World War II. It is a diary of losses and a chronicle in which the fighter pilots plays the lead. It tells of the young men who joined their squadrons full of optimisim and derring-do only to give their lives to no purpose in a last desperate endeavour. The focal point of this book is the controversial Operation 'Bodenplatte' on the morning of New Year's Day 1945 an operation in which the German fighter force received its final mortal wound - losing some 230 aircrew in less than four hours the fighter units suffered their most severe defeat. Only now after years of evaluation of all available sources can the true figures of fighter losses on January 1 1945 be reported. But this picture of the sacrifice of fighter formations does not mean that fighter pilots were unable to score successes. The figures for enemy aircraft shot down and the contact reports show clearly that the German pilots could still both parry and deal out hard punches. Few people have any real idea of the actual scale of the German fighter force's sacrifice. The imagination boggles at the tragic events that took place in the skies over Europe as the war neared its end and even in the perspective of history the full extent of the debacle can scarcely be depicted. Here the author explains these last six months of the Luftwaffe and the fall of a once mighty air force." Dust jacket has very light wrinkle at top of spine and front flap-fold. Hard Cover. "On a night in August 1943 RAF Bomber Command launched a unique operation to destroy a secret research establishment located on the remote Baltic coast of Germany. That place was Peenemunde the cradle of the space age. Here Germany's most brilliant scientists were developing an advanced form of rocket projectile that Hitler planned to launch in large numbers in order to destroy London and cause the collapse of British morale and resistance. The V-2 rocket Hitler hoped would reverse the course of the war and bring him victory. "Of all the fronts fought on by the Jagdflieger during World War 2 the Russian or Eastern was easily the most lucrative in terms of targets for the 'experten'. Marry an abundance of targets with the Luftwaffe's best piston-engined fighter of the war - Focke-Wulf's Fw 190 'Butcher Bird' - and it quickly becomes apparent why so many Jagdflieger achieved kills that passed the 100 victories mark. Flying in variable weather on a battlefront that was constantly changing the Fw 190 pilots fought virtually to extinction in both the pure fighter and the crucial 'Schlacht' ground attack roles." "The B-24 Liberator was built in greater numbers than any other US warplane yet its combat crews live even today in th e shadow of the less plentiful but better-known B-17. Accounts of the 'Mighty Eighth' in Europe and indeed many of the books and films that emerged from the greatest air campaign in history often overlook the B-24 even though it was in a c t i o n for as long as the Flying Fortress and participated in just as many perilous daylight bombing missions. Twenty-one bomb groups saw action with the Eighth from 9 October 1942 through to VE-Day operating both from airfields in the 'bombe r tr ia ng le ' in East Anglia and North Africa. Later in an effort to counter the Kamikaze threat the Corsair was once a g a i n hurriedly pressed into service; this time in its originally intended role as a shipboard fighter. STORMS OF CONTROVERSY: THE SECRET AVRO ARROW FILES REVEALED. FOURTH EDITION REVISED.
Toronto: Dundurn 2010. 284 pp large 8vo 9" H. B&w photographs. "The development of the Avro Arrow supersonic fighter was a remarkable Canadian achievement. Its mysterious cancellation in February 1959 prompted questions that have long gone unanswered. What role did the Central Intelligence Agency play in the scrapping of the project Who in Canada's government was involved in that decision What if anything did Canada get in return Who ordered the blowtorching of all the prototypes And did Arrow technology find its way into the American Stealth fighter/bomber program When this book was first published in 1992 its answers to these questions sent shock waves across the country. Using never-before-released documents it exploded the myth that design flaws cost overruns or obsolescence had triggered the demise of the Arrow. Now in this fully revised fourth edition complete with two new appendices the bestselling book bring readers up-to-date on the CF- 105 Arrow the most innovative sophisticated aircraft the world had seen by the end of the 1950s." MIKOYAN MiG-21. OSPREY AIR COMBAT.
London: Osprey 1986. 200 pp 10 9/16" H. "Today the MiG-21 is beginning to become a trifle long in the tooth. But the latest version is still in mass-production in India while almost the first version is not only being manufactured in China but is a new contender in the world market for fighters! Meanwhile every second or two MiG-21s thunder aloft wearing the colours of more air forces than any other warplane before or since. Opinions of it vary. 'Fabulous' said an Egyptian. ' A supersonic sports plane' said an Indian but of a very early version. 'Formidable in the air combat role' said a Frenchman. 'Formidable simply because of its numbers' said an American general who called it the Fishbed the NATO code name. The author homes in on the most numerous jet aircraft in history. For the first time we have not just a description of a modern Soviet warplane but a thoughful account of its background with a wry glance at the confusion its emergence caused in the West discussion of why it came out as it did and in particular a detailed look at its many curious design features developed through more than 20 variants. Even today many Western descriptions have got it wrong. This epoch-making 200-page book will put many misconceptions right. Illustrated with over 160 black and white photographs many previously unpublished and 12 photographs in full colour." TESTING EARLY JETS: COMPRESSIBILITY AND THE SUPERSONIC ERA.
Shrewsbury: Airlife 1990. 143 pp large 8vo 9 3/4" H. B&w photographs. "Roland Beaumont is one of the most experienced and highly-rated test pilots of the post-war era. In this book he outlines the significance of developments in early jets. Beaumont is well placed to make such assessments. As chief test pilot he made the first flights on fourteen new-type aircaft. He was test pilot on many of the first and second generation jet fighters and bombers both British and American as well as the first British supersonic aircraft. The core of the book is made up of the author's flight test reports on such aircraft as the Gloster Meteor the North American B45 the English Electric Canberra the English Electric Lightning and Britain's first supersonic bomber the TSR2 a project which was cancelled before the aircraft went into production. VIETNAM MiG KILLERS: DEADLY DUEL OVER VIETNAM.
Osceola WI: Motorbooks 1988. 128 pp small 4to 10 3/4" H. "The enemies were numerous. The jungle heat and the broad sea the North Vietnamese Air Force and their arch ace Colonel Tomb the MiG-17s and MiG-21s. Points on the American side were our elite pilots aircraft and weapons: the Thunderchiefs Crusaders and of course Phantoms. The air battles of the Vietnam War were fierce; the victors earned their wings and the kill markings emblazoned on their planes. This book spotlights the duels between America's pilots and the MiGs in the skies over Southeast Asia. Most of all this is a book about airplanes. Here are the Phantoms Colonel Robin Olds piloted to score four kills. The intrepid Skyhawk which downed a MiG-17 with an unguided air-to-ground missile. And F-4 number 155880 which finally blew Hanoi's Colonel Tomb out of the sky earning its pilot ace status. Here are the men and machines that flew Rolling Thunder and Linebacker I and II. Military expert Robert F. Dorr has collected a superb gallery of glowing color photos - many of them contemporary - and written a detailed history chock full of anecdotes." Pickler Ron and Milberry Larry. Foreword by Robert E. Brown.
CANADAIR: THE FIRST 50 YEARS.
Toronto: CANAV 1995. 392 pp 4to 11 1/4" H. "Tells the story of a company that started as a 'bucket shop' producing aircraft designed by other manufacturers and ended as a world leader in the design and manufacture of business jets and regional airliners. The book goes back to the company's roots. In the 1920s its predecessor Canadian Vickers built some of Canada's first bush planes. Then comes the Second World War when Canso patrol planes were built under licence. At war's end a group of entrepreneurs took over the plant just as production dropped to zero. They formed Canadair which cornered the market on reconditioned C-47s DC-3s while developing the North Star Canada's first modern airliner. In 1947 Canadair was purchased by an American firm the Electric Boat Company. This brought Canadair into the jet age with the mass productin of fighters and trainers and gave Electric Boat the revenue needed to form General Dynamics. The book tells how unfortunate timing prevented two innovative products the CL-44 and the CL-84 from possibly thrusting Canadair into the ranks of the major international aircraft manufacturers. It describes too how the termination of military programs like the F-104 forced Canadair to diversify into new fields. This led to two successful programs the CL-215 waterbomber and the CL-89 surveillance drone. The threat of plant closure during the recession of the early 1970s prompted Ottawa to buy Canadair. So began its most controversial era that of the Challenger business jets. From early excitement and optimism through delays disappointments criticism and eventual government bail-out to worldwide acclaim the details are all here. The final chapters describe the exciting developments at Canadair since the acquisition by Bombardier and outline its strategy for a bright future. Besides detailed text and hundreds of photos the book includes an appendix with three-views lists of products studies first flights awards etc. - more than enough data to satisfy the most demanding aviation 'buff'." ARROW THROUGH THE HEART: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF CRAWFORD GORDON AND THE AVRO ARROW.
Toronto: McGraw-Hill Ryerson 1998. 216 pp large 8vo 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The argument persists whether Crawford Gordon was one of the greatest industrialists and business minds this country has produced or whether he was just a canny political cowboy who herded the imagination of an entire country into his corral of schemes and moneymaking junkets. Unfortunately Gordon was in many ways like the project of his life - the ill-fated now almost legendary Avro Arrow. Both rose quickly promising great feats and both met their ends quickly and tragically much too soon for the rest of us to determine their true potential. Still no one can deny that in his short life Gordon's accomplishments were considerable. When Crawford Gordon led A.V. Roe in the 1950s it was the third largest company in Canada. And when he laid off almost 15000 workers in February 1959 in response to the Diefenbaker government's decision to scrap the Arrow this was an unprecedented and shocking move. Was this a calculated attention-getting maneuvre aimed at saving the Arrow program or a bitter vengeful shot at the Diefenbaker regime To get a sense of the man behind the business the author delved into the public archives and interviewed more than 30 people - family members friends and business colleagues. Written in co-operation with the Gordon family Stewart was given access to Crawford Gordon's private papers and never-before published photos ." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. FLYING COLORS. FEATURING OVER 1300 MILITARY AIRCRAFT MARKINGS AND COLOR SCHEMES.
London: Salamander 1997. 207 pp 4to 12" H. Profusely illustrated in colour. "Military aircraft have been variously daubed cunningly camouflaged boastfully personalized or otherwise extravagantly colored since they first took to the air more than 80 years ago. From the time that the identity of aircraft was established with national insignia the markings of aircraft has become a science and their decoration an art form. At times of tension trends have been toward camouflage colors for concealment as international relationships deteriorated. Yet in peace and war there have also been 'anti-camouflage' color schemes applied specifically to render aircraft more conspicuous for training rescue and other purposes. 'Flying Colors' is a superb survey of this fascinating scene depicting more than 100 different aircraft types from the World War I Spads to the modern swing-wing Tornado in more than 1300 spectacular illustrations.
