‎DOUGLAS BADER: A BIOGRAPHY OF THE LEGENDARY WORLD WAR II FIGHTER PILOT.‎

‎Shrewsbury: Airlife 1995. 252 pp large 8vo 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "Based on extensive interviews which the author had with Douglas Bader during the last thirteen years of his life it tells the full story from his childhood to his work with the disabled in later life. After a flying accident in which he lost his legs Douglas Bader was invalided out of the RAF. At the outbreak of war in 1939 he was recalled to the RAF and returned to flying. He fought in the Battle of Britain and later in nearly one hundred offensive fighter patrols. Follow-ing a mid-air collision he was captured and became a prisoner-of-war and was imprisoned in Colditz. The story of his war-time activities both in the air and as a POW is told in some detail and makes fascinating reading. These activities helped him to achieve celebrity status and in later life much of his time was given to promoting causes for the disabled." ‎THE DIARY OF A P.B.O. POOR BLOODY OBSERVER.‎

‎Erin Ontario: Boston Mills Press 1981. 88 pp 4to 11 1/4" H. Map endpapers b&w photographs. "At eighteen along with several of his Boy Scout pals Shrive joined the 129th Battery of the Royal Canadian Artillery. Chistmas 1916 found Shrive in England encamped in the seemingly endless rain on Salisbury Plain. The next May he was on the Western Front and on June 17 1917 still only nineteen he was struck by shrapnel at Vimy Ridge. By one of the ironies that war provides he can be considered lucky for his wounds sent him to England to convalesce. There we pick up his story on a September afternoon. His narrative begins at this point where chance intervened to change the direction of his life. While lying on a Kentish hillside he saw two airplanes then new-fangled marvels cavorting in the sky above. Why didn't he join the infant Royal Flying Corps a friend present asked The thought was not a new one but the moment to act was. Young Shrive joined the RFC and made as he recognised at the time 'one of the most important decisions of my life.' One significant result of this decision came a year later when the newly commissioned 2nd Lieutenant Frank Shrive of the Royal Flying Corps found himself on board the SS Stephen out of Dundee bound for Russia. With him was a Canadian artillery brigade and infantry regiments from the United States Britain and France. They were on their way to Archangel on the northern Russian coast and though they did not perhaps realize it were about to participate in the Russian Civil War." Minor edge wear. ‎THE KOLLER WAR DIARY.‎

‎Sturbridge Massachusetts : Monogram Aviation Publications 1990. 104 pp 9" H. "When the story starts in the middle of April 1945 the Russians were advancing rapidly on Berlin. At this time the OKL Luftwaffe High Command staff code named Kurfurst 1 was still based at Wildpart- Werder near Berlin but steps had already been taken to establish an alternative command post in the so-called 'Alpine Redoubt' in the Bavarian and Austrian Alps. Known as Kurfurst 3 the new headquarters had been set up in a former lunatic asylum at Wasserburg near Munich by the end of February 1945. Over the next two months staff were gradually transferred from the Berlin area to Wasserburg but by April 28 American troops were advancing on Munich and General Koller decided to move part of his staff to the Berchtesgaden complex. By May 3 the first components had moved to Thumersbach a beautiful Alpine village on the shores of the Zell and See lake Koller himself arrived there on May 6. Two days later he was joined by the new Luftwaffe commander in chief Robert Ritter von Greim. Koller's diary relates the maneuverings that surrounded these events the growing interference in the day-to-day running of the Luftwaffe by the SS and Nazi Party Gauleiters district commissioners which combined with overwhelming Allied air superiority reduced the Luftwaffe an air force which only six years ago had been the most powerful in the world to complete chaos. He describes in graphic detail how Hitler deserted by all but Goebbels and Bormann of the Nazi hierarchy had an almost complete breakdown and how Goring was removed from power and placed under arrest." ‎THE ARROW.‎

‎Toronto: James Lorimer 1997. 166 pp 9" H. B&w photographs. "Here is the fascinating story of the rise and fall of the Arrow the legendary interceptor jet aircraft developed by A.V. Roe Canada in the fifties. The Arrow was an unprecedented success story for Canada's fledgling aviation industry. It was conceived by its builders as the culmination of an impressive string of world firsts. Faster than any previous aircraft it represented the leading edge of technology and an achievement of the highest calibre. Then came the dramatic decision whose rationale was not made public at the time and which remains hard to fathom even today. The Diefenbaker government cancelled the Arrow and everything was destroyed including the planes themselves. Nothing was to remain. Working from official documents archives interviews and a wide range of unofficial sources James Dow presents the authoritative story of A.V. Roe Canada and its projects. He describes how the Arrow was developed and why it was killed. Dow takes us behind the scenes to the real dynamics and rivalries which were a part of the Arrow from the beginning and which explain its fate. This edition of the definitive books on the subject has been updated with a new introduction." . Soft Cover. Fine. James Lorimer Paperback‎

‎New York: PublicAffairs 2006. 313 pp large 8vo 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs map. "The story of a gilded generation of young men from the zenith of privilege: a Rockefeller a Taft the son on the head of the Union Pacific Railroad a son of J.P. Morgan's leading partner and several who counted friends and relatives among presidents and statesmen of the day. Most were students at Yale in 1916 striving for rewards on the athletic fields in school organizations and in Skull & Bones. They had it all and remarkably by modern standards they were prepared to risk it all to fight a distant war in France. Driven by the belief that their membership in the American elite required certain sacrifices schooled in heroism and the nature of leadership they were determined to be first into the conflict leading the way ahead of America's declaration that it would join the Great War in Europe. At the heart of the group was the Yale flying club six of whose members are the heroes of this book. They would share rivalries over girlfriends jealousies over membership in Skull & Bones and fierce ambition to be the most daring young man over the battlefields of France where the casualties among flyers were chillingly high." ‎SURVIVOR'S STORY.‎

‎London: Hutchinson 1956. 182 pp 8vo 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs maps. "Distinguished survivor of the early flying days and of many campaigns the author was the last British Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Air Force. This is the story not only of his own long and exciting years of service in many parts of the world but also of the Air Force itself from the time of the Flying Corps to the present day. In this book he strikes a new and very readable line among senior Air Force writers for he does not forget to give due place to the lighter and social side. His accounts of those early days when he served with the R.F.C. at Aboukir are both inspiring and amusing. After the First World War he had a highly eventful spell of service in Iraq Palestine and Transjordan and later in the early 1930's he went to Kenya and the Sudan. He has many good big-game stories to tell and many valuable comments to make also upon conditons in these troubled regions. A high-spot of his book is his account of the Battle of Britain throwing as it does considerable light upon the controversies regarding R.A.F. tactics and control. He had wide personal experience too of the war in Burma and was also present at Singapore when the Japanese surrendered. ‎THUNDER GODS: THE KAMIKAZE PILOTS TELL THEIR STORY.‎

‎New York: Kodansha 1989. 215 pp 8vo 8 1/2" H. Map endpapers b&w photographs map. "The compelling first-hand account of the pilots who pledged themselves to die for their emperor in the closing days of the Pacific War. Known to the world as kamikaze - divine wind - their suicide attacks on American naval forces caused panic and disruption but they were born out of the desperation of the Imperial Command determined to avoid the shame of surrender at any cost. Using as a rationale the loudly proclaimed belief that suicide attacks by Japanese pilots attested to the spiritual righteousness of Japan's struggle the Command's exhortations convinced legions of young men of the virtue of volunteering for the Ohka program in which flying bombs were constructed whose only guiding mechanism was their human cargo. The pilots are the thunder gods of the title and this is the first time they have told their own story. Combines military history technical innovation and the personal stories of men of whom something extraordinary was asked men who died in futility or survived to reflect on their experiences with mixed feelings of pride poignance and cynicism. These pilots were not fanatics or automatons but sacrificial victims to the excesses of war. 'Thunder Gods' tells their story and returns to them their humanity." ‎London: Brockhampton 1999. 256 pp large 8vo 9 7/16" H. B&w photographs. "Provides the first clear fully-documented view of Manfred von Richthofen as an air-fighter exemplary leader and an important figure in the development of German fighter units and tactics in the First World War. It was made possible by extensive research and with the end of the Cold War the release of significant documents in eastern Germany that had been unavailable to western historians since before the Second World War. It traces the development of German fighter aviation from the early single-aircraft aerial ambushes to the massed attacks of Jadgeschwader I the battle force that Richthofen developed into a highly effective weapon. ‎THE SKY ON FIRE: THE FIRST BATTLE OF BRITAIN 1917-1918 AND THE BIRTH OF THE ROYAL AIR FORCE.‎

‎Washington D.C.: Smithsonian 1991. 289 pp 9" H. B&w photographs maps reproductions. "World War I in the air is popularly recalled as a romance of dawn patrols and chivalrous duels between Spads and Fokkers over the Western Front. All but forgotten are the day and night raids German airmen carried out against England with large bombers during 1917-1918. Based on firsthand accounts from British and German sources this book explores all aspects of the first systematic strategic air campaign in history including the impact it had on the strategy and conduct of World War II. The daring airmen who pioneered this new mode of warfare flew twin-engined Gotha and Giant bombers. Their raids on London spurred the British to create the Royal Air Force the world's first independent air service and the London Air Defense Area. Except for some technological refinements notably radar it was essentially the same air defense system that was to serve Britain so well in World War II." ‎ON YANKEE STATION: THE NAVAL AIR WAR OVER VIETNAM.‎

‎Annapolis Maryland: Naval Institute Press 1987. 179 pp large 8vo 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs maps diagrams. "Combining vivid personal narrative with historical and operational analyses this book takes a candid look at U.S. naval airpower in the Vietnam War. Authors John B. Nichols a fighter pilot who flew some 350 missions off carriers in the Gulf of Tonkin and Barrett Tillman an award-winning aviation historian make full use of their extensive knowledge of the subject to detail the ways in which airpower was employed in the years prior to the fall of Saigon. Confronting the conventional belief that airpower failed in Vietnam they show that on the rare occasions when it was applied correctly airpower was effective but because it was most often misunderstood and misapplied the overall results proved catastrophic. Calling their book a cockpit view of the war with the benefit of fourteen years of hindsight the authors impart a compelling sense of what it was like to fly from Yankee Station between 1964 and 1973 and provide important lessons for those who may become involved in future conflicts. At the same time they add considerable facts to the permanent war record." Faint erased pencil mark on half-title page very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine tiny scuff on front board. The diary may perhaps help readers grasp even more clearly than they do already from following events in the Press the accumulation of weight both political and military that piled up during the first phase of this universal warfare to handicap the commanders of the British Expeditionary Force and the British Air Forces in France." Today the Spitfire is still remembered with affection by all who flew in her. This tribute brings together a fascinating collection of writings by men who flew or admired her from the top Allied flying ace of the Second World War Air Vice Marshal 'Johnnie' Johnson to his German counterpart General Major Adolf Galland and from such illustrious names as H.E. "What is it like to fly a fighter in combat More specifically what was it like to fly an F-4 Phantom in combat over Vietnam The answers are in this exciting personal account by ex-Marine Corps pilot John Trotti who flew over 600 missions during his two tours of duty there. Reading this book is the closest thing to actually flying a fighter aircraft in war. The reader experiences the life of a figher pilot - from the boredom of the Hot Pad waiting for the Scramble to moments of terror as a SAM pops out of the cloud deck heading straight for your aircraft. You ride in the cockpit with Trotti as he bores straight down to target and pickles his bombs feeling the exhilaration of no holds barred flying then a stunned sense of loss as a friend's aircraft goes down in flames. You see a pilot's innermost fears and learn his feelings about war." Three tiny faint scuffs on front board wrinkling at top/bottom of spine a few pages with tiny corner crease. ‎FLYING TIGERS.‎

‎New York: Gallery 1990. 80 pp 12 1/8" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs. "In August 1941 a handful of young Americans disembarked at Rangoon Burma the first contingent of fighter pilots of Claire Lee Chennault's American Volunteer Group. Enlisted from the US Army Navy and Marine Corps to aid the Chinese Nationalist forces of Chiang Kai-shek in their bitter war against the Japanese Chennault's aviators were destined to gain worldwide renown as the Flying Tigers. Within the year the Flying Tigers' distinctive shark-toothed P-40 fighters would be credited with destroying nearly 300 enemy aircraft. Chennault was an innovative aerial tactician and recognizing his unit's acute shortages of pilots and aircraft decreed that his three squadrons - the Adam and Eves Hell's Angels and Panda Bears - were only to engage the enemy on the most favorable terms. His strict code of war paid dividends during the hard-fought air combats over Rangoon in which the Flying Tigers consistently outfought a numerically superior enemy thereby preventing the Japanese from gaining air superiority over the Burmese capital and allowing the British and Imperial ground troops to make their escape to the Indian border. 'Flying Tigers' retells the full story behind one of World War II's most colorful fighting elite forces from the recruitment of the first pilots through their intial training in Burma and the savage dogfights over Rangoon to their missions defending the retreating Allied forces. A final chapter looks at the demise of the unit and makes a critical assessment of its contribution to the Allied war effort." Minor corner wear. ‎THEY FOUGHT FOR THE SKY: THE DRAMATIC STORY OF THE FIRST WAR IN THE AIR.‎

‎Toronto: Clark Irwin 1957. 304pp. 8vo 8 5/8" H. B&w photographs. Dust jacket painting by famed aviation artist John T. McCoy Jr. portraying a dogfight between a Sopwith Camel and a Fokker Triplane. "In four short years man developed to terrible perfection the ability to kill and destroy in the lonely battlefield of the sky. In 1913 flying machines were little more than toys and the men who built them and who flew them were regarded at best as amiable eccentrics; by 1918 however the lightly regarded airplane had become a potent war machine and the men who flew were international heroes. This great war-adventure story is told here dramatically and with powerful immediacy by one of our best war reporters. It is the story of the birth of air power but more it is the story of 'those gallant young men of a luckless generation most of whom flew to glorious martrydom.' The names of the great aces are still remembered today: Richenbacker Billy Bishop Richthofen James McCudden Fokker Roy Brown Lufbery and scores of others. Their personal stories are all here. Mr. Reynolds has also included the technical developments of World War I the great Zeppelin raids on London the Lafayette Escadrille and most exciting of all the hundreds of dogfights over No Man's Land which strangely enough unexpectedly brought about the return of the ancient concept of the duel to warfare along with a code of chivalry obsolete for centuries." ‎DECISION OVER SCHWEINFURT: THE U.S. 8th AIR FORCE BATTLE FOR DAYLIGHT BOMBING.‎

‎David McKay New York 1977 book club edition. 341 pp 8vo 8 7/16" H hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs map. "Describes moment by moment the August 17 1943 raid as well as the second Schweinfurt mission October 14 1943 - the two most savage battles in the history of air warfare. It also describes day by day the lives and deaths of the men on both sides who faced each other not only in these but in other epic battles. Yet this is more than the story of the two famous Schweinfurt missions: it is also the story of the development of the U.S. 8th Air Force in England and the most crucial combat tests of the American daylight precision bombing strategy. Citing hundreds of previously unpublished documents the book reveals for the first time the full struggle to establish this daring American strategy against the conviction of many authoritative people that it would not work. These people included British Prime Minister Winston Churchill all his air experts and many generals and admirals in the U.S. Army and Navy. American and British strategists were arguing this issue when in February 1942 Brig Gen. Ira C. Eaker and his staff arrived in England to create the 8th Bomber Command. When Eaker launched the first great Schweinfurt mission eighteen months later the matter was still undecided. Could the B-17s battle their way through the waves of Luftwaffe fighters and destroy the Schweinfurt factories Or would the bombers be turned back exposing the American Air Forces strategy as a dismal failure This was the issue that produced the crucial decision over Schweinfurt." ‎Norton GG. Introduction by Lt General Sir Brian Horrocks. G. G.‎

‎THE RED DEVILS: FROM BRUNEVAL TO THE FALKLANDS. NEW EDITION. FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES.‎

‎London: Leo Cooper 1984. 310 pp 8vo 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs maps/battle plans. "From Bruneval to North Africa from Normandy to Suez by parachute and glider the men of the Airborne Forces have gone by air to battle. But their activities have by no means been confined to purely airborne operations - the Special Air Service performed prodigies of valour behind the German Lines in the Western Desert and Italy; the Glider Pilot Regiment fought beside their infantry comrades in Normandy at Arnhem and across the Rhine. Their post-war successors maintaining these traditions have stood between Jew and Arab in Palestine; fought and sweltered in the jungles of Malaya and Borneo; sweated in the Persian Gulf and the Radfan; choked on the summer dust of Cypriot roads; tasted the grit and sand of Egypt and Jordan in their mess tins; spent more than a deade facing terroritst ambush bombs and bullets in Northern Ireland; exprienced the subzero temperatures and biting actic winds of the South Atlantic and 'tabbed' across the Falklands to spearhead victory in 1982. Nor should the aircrews who flew them be forgotten or the air supply despatchers who maintained them and the units who supported them. With well over 100 photographs and illustrations this book is a comprehensive single-volume history of the Airborne Forces. Accounts are given of the airborne actions fought by the British Army whilst the development of the parachute assault and the use of glider-borne troops can be followed from their infancy to the massive 'coup de main' technique employed in the Rhine crossing." ‎Bishop Billy. William. Introduction by Stanley M. Ulanoff.‎

‎WINGED WARFARE. THE ILLUSTRATED CLASSIC AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF CANADIAN WORLD WAR I ACE BILLY BISHOP.‎

‎Toronto: McGraw-Hill Ryerson 1990. 281 pp 8vo 8 1/2" H. B&w illustrations. "Billy Bishop enlisted as an infantryman at the outbreak of World War I. He soon transferred to the Royal Flying Corps where flying came as naturally to him as breathing. In this classic autobiography Billy Bishop vividly recreates the early days when the 'airborne jalopy' was getting its trial run. He describes the tiny Nieuport Scout armed with a single Lewis gun in which he had to dodge the 'Archies' anti-aircraft batteries and fight the scarlet tri-winged Fokkers flown by the formidable Baron von Richthofen and his squadrons." Bishop was credited with 72 victories and was the recipient of every British decoration including the Victoria Cross. ‎Kennett Lee.‎

‎THE FIRST AIR WAR 1914-1918.‎

‎New York: Free Press 1991. 275 pp large 8vo 9 7/16" H. B&w photographs. "Tells the complete story of the Great War's air battles from eastern and western front from the skies and seas of Europe to those of the Middle East and Africa. Based on exhaustive research - official records scholarly works diaries correspondence memoirs and oral history transcripts - this unique history traces the airplane's prewar debut and development and its appeal to all belligerents large and small who raced to develop their own designs strategies and tactics. Kennett shows how the plane used first as a frail 'flying observation platform' evolved into a weapon of destruction and death whose power was made incontrovertible by 1916 at the great battle of Verdun. While he chronicles the struggle for dominance in the air the author also provides insight into the role of flying weaponry in the great land battles. As the combat role of these amazing machines became more defined their use became more diverse as witnessed by the development of massed fighters the emergence of close air support strategic bombing and anti-aircraft defenses and the introduction of escort and patrol work and anti-submarine warfare at sea. Here to are the daring men who volunteered to pilot these newfangled machines. Following them through flight school and into fighting units Kennett dramatically recreates both the dangers of airborne combat and the boisterous romantic world of the squadron on the ground." ‎Armitage Michael.‎

‎THE ROYAL AIR FORCE: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY.‎

‎London: Brockhampton 1996. 288 pp large 8vo 9 7/8" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs maps. "Created in 1918 from the former Royal Flying Corps the RAF forged its own traditions as it developed the tactics and weap- onry of aerial warfare. It ended the First World War with a strength of 300000 personnel and 23000 aircraft but there was the immediate threat of stringent post-war defence budgets and an Army and Navy that demanded that air power be under their control. The Chief of Air Staff Trenchard needed a successful example of the potential of air power in order to guarantee future funding and it came in the RAF air-policing role in the Near East. The RAF was perhaps the most neglected armed force during the 'appeasement years' despite vocal opposition and foreign militarization. After desperate rearm-ament in both aircraft and ground forces the RAF stemmed the tide of German expansion in the Battle of Britain. The author devotes one third of the book to the superb record of the RAF throughout the Second World War acknowledging the problems in command strategy and aircraft equipment that appeared in all theatres during the fight against the Axis forces. Chapters cover the lean years from 1940 to 1942 with the RAF over-committed on all fronts through the gradual build-up with improved aircraft and on to the heavy bombing campaign and the final comprehensive air assault on Germany. The years 1944-1945 mark the high point of RAF history but the factual framework continues with details of the appearance of jet aircraft the deployments worldwide as the British Empire evolved into the Commonwealth and the RAF's changing tactical and strategic roles as Britain declined from 'superpower' status. This period also includes an appraisal of the V-bomber force the slow decline in British research and development the emergence of the RAF role in NATO and the balance of power during the Cold War. The history of the RAF is fully detailed up to the present as one receding threat causes significant change in the number and type of aircraft needed to face the perceived new problems posed by developing nations." ‎Warden John A. III Colonel USAF. Introduction by Gen. Charles L. Donnelly Jr. USAF.‎

‎THE AIR CAMPAIGN: PLANNING FOR COMBAT. VOLUME III - FUTURE WARFARE SERIES.‎

‎Washington: Pergamon-Brassey's 1989. 161 pp large 8vo 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "One of the first analyses of the pure art of planning the aerial dimension of war. It explores the complicated connection between air superiority and victory by focusing on the use of air forces at the operational level in a theater of war. The most compelling task for the theater commander the author argues is translating national war objectives into tactical plans at operational levels. He presents his case by drawing on fascinating historical examples stressing that mastery of operational-level strategy can be the key to winning future wars. This book offers today's planners greater understanding of how to use air power against numerous enemy capabilities in a wide variety of air operations." Remainder mark on top of text block.
