Aeronautics is the method of designing an airplane or other flying machine. There are four basic areas that aeronautical engineers must understand in order to be able to design planes. To design a plane engineers must understand all of these elements. Design Process: 1 Aerodynamics. is the study of how air flows around the airplane. By studying the way air flows around the plane the engineers can define the shape of the plane. The wings the tail and the main body or fuselage of the plane all affect the way the air will move around the plane. 2. Propulsion. is the study of how to design an engine that will provide the thrust that is needed for a plane to take off and fly through the air. The engine provides the power for the airplane. The study of propulsion is what leads the the engineers determine the right kind of engine and the right amount of power that a plane will need. 3. Materials and Structures. is the study of what materials are to be used on the plane and in the engine and how those materials make the plane strong enough to fly effectively. The choice of materials that are used to make the fuselage wings tail and engine will affect the strength and stability of the plane. First edition first issue w/o reviews on back cover of this fascinating work which was the first to put forward the arguments that Gustave Whitehead 1874-1927 had achieved power flight 2 years before the Wright Brothers in 1901. This controversy has reemerged in the recent years because the editor of Jane’s All the World’s Aircraft chose to support the claim while most including the National Air & Space Museum Curator feel that the evidence is very sparse. In addition there have been recent teams in 1986 and 1998 constructing experimental reproductions of Whitehead 21B at the Experimental Association fly-in and in Germany but these have been disputed as well because they have used some modern materials such as fiberglass and modern engines. Randolph b. 1895 was initially drawn into researching the flights of Whitehead during the Great Depression as a free-lance writing assignment and would eventually accumulate a substantial collection of correspondence affidavits articles and interviews now held in the Special Collections History of Aviation Collection Univ. of Texas at Dallas ID # H001-71. Contemporary Spruce plywood post-binder covers same as wood used for spars and biplane bodies in World War I rounded corners piano hinge front joint gilt decorative lettering & logo on front cover minor scuffing shelfwear still VG exemplar. This outstanding souvenir album depicts the height of the vital Naval Aviation Training School which provided essential technical expertise and training to entire generations of Naval Aviators and Naval aviation mechanics and carpenters through World War I and beyond. Founded originally in 1904 when a board appointed by President Theodore Roosevelt selected two farms of north of Lake Bluff IL as a training station which originally covered 172 acres. By Armistice Day at the end of World War I the facility had expanded to 1200 acres and over 45000 men underwent training. Of particular interest in this album are the 36 panoramic photographs documenting Naval Aviator and Naval Aviation mechanic classes for the 15th Regiment and 1st Battalion 15th Regiment from 1919-1920 as well as class rooms machine shops for aviation mechanics and Naval instructors. Others encompass the cutaway model Aviation engines with instructional charts on the surrounding wals the carpenter’s shop with aviation machinery jigs on work benches and airline bodies under construction. One photo depicts the Motor Laboratory Steam Laboratory and Equipment from the USS Eagle 25 at the Aviation Mechanics’ School a US Navy patrol boat which had sunk in a storm in June 1920 and then been raised and sold off as a hulk by Dec. 1921. Other panoramic photos capture the Riggers’ School classroom at Great lakes with full scale biplanes and seaplanes scale model dirigible the Coppersmith School classroom the Fittings classroom with airplane propellers hanging from the walls dip baths for machined parts and nickel plate coating and several of the Naval Aviation School football baseball and other sporting teams including the largest panorama of the Inter-Training Station Baseball championship team from Great Lakes. Wallenstein 1861-1958 was a longtime Chicago photographer through the first four decades of the 20th Century who operated his studio out of his 3928 N. Kenneth home and specialized in panoramic photographs. Western Photo Studio in Waukegan IL appears to have been short-lived as the Waukegan IL directories from 1918-1921 do not list the business but possibly connected with the Western Union Telegraph offices as the address was interchangeable. Volpe 1885-1950 began working in New York originally as a bookbinder before enlisting as an aviation mechanic with the US Navy in 1910 assigned originally to the newly formed ground school in Pensacola and later became Chief Warrant Officer Pilot Airman and Instructor who oversaw the Naval Aviation Training School from 1918-1921. ‎Jeddah: Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Ministry of Defense and Aviation; Lockheed Aircraft International 1983. The Saudi approach is unique Unrecorded institutionally and commercially this attractive set of albums celebrates Lockheed's role in augmenting Saudi Arabia's air traffic control systems both commercial and military over the period 1972-82. They comprise a total of 80 leaves covering summaries of developments "information flow" diagrams for Kaia Riyadh International Dhahran and Jeddah airports colour maps charts and photographs of facilities operatives and aircraft. Writing in Arabian Studies in 1976 aviation expert Elda I. Stifani notes: "By virtue of its geographical position and the strategic economic and political interests of both local and worldwide powers the Middle East plays a major role in civil aviation operations … The Saudi approach is unique. No other country in the Arabian Peninsula has an equally determined and precise policy of national aviation development" Arabian Studies III p. 36. Interestingly he also notes that "Bahrain handles air traffic for all the UAA United Arabian Airlines Qatar part of Oman of Kuwait and of Saudi Arabia Dhahran". In March 1974 the Saudi airline Saudia ordered two of Lockheed's new TriStar airliners specially fitted with increased wing fuel tankage. By 1978 Saudia had increased its fleet of TriStars to thirteen. Provenance: presented to Clifford G. Fay of Lockheed Saudi Arabia 1980-82 with his name and dates of service on the front covers. Loosely inserted is a typed letter from Lockheed to Fay presenting the volumes and mentioning that they have been supplied by Joe Akers who was a Lockheed veteran with 28-years' experience at the company retiring as chairman in 1988 26 June 1983 Jeddah letterhead in English and Arabic. 2 vols landscape quarto 235 x 320 mm. With 80 sheets presented recto and verso in clear plastic pockets. Original ring binders fan-patterned cloth spines brown morocco-grain faux leather sides upper covers and front flaps with gilt arms of Saudi Arabia. First edition thus of this exceedingly scarce flight manual for the popular L-1049H Super Constellation from Lockheed affectionately referred to as the “Super Connie†or “Super H†and “Husky†was the competitor airliner to the popular DC-6 and popular with Quantas Airlines Northwest Orient Flying Tiger Lines and as in the case for this manual Resort Airlines Inc. The L-1049H entered service in Nov. 1956 and mated a C-121C fuselage with a L-1049G providing a convertible passenger/freight aircraft whose cargo hold had a volume of 565 cubic feet and could carry up to 120 people with seats luggage lockers and bathroom facilities. The Super Constellations were popular aricraft and favorted by many Latin American airlines continuing in service until 1966 when the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8 basically rendered them obsolete. A total of 56 were built in various configurations and as with most flight manuals these were ever-changing with sections added revised and/or removed by the airline as specifications changed. In this case Resort Airlines Inc. which operated out of Oakland CA from 1949-1961 has added several sections with mimeographed updates to the Lockheed installments including Emergency Procedures Landing Instructions Runway Analysis and Spare Parts Kit. Of particular interest are the Runway Analysis for such airports as Atsugi Agana Guam Honolulu Int. Hawaii McChord AFB Manila P.I. Oakland Int. California Wake Island and others. First edition of this exceedingly rare Lockheed Aircraft Corp. service manual for the Lockheed Lodestar 18 which was a substantial enhancement from the earlier Lockheed 14 Super Electra featuring sections on the fuselage wings wing flaps landing gear stabilizers instruments and more. The Lodestar was developed to compete with the popular Douglas DC-3 but even with its’ greater capabilities in cruising speed range and altitude performance allowing it to easily cross the Rocky Mountains it was not until the Lodestar 18 was enhanced with 5 additional feet and 18 seats which made it profitable. It first entered service with Mid-Continent Airlines and Continental in the United States along with one for United Airlines and several overseas customers. In 1942 most of the domestic models were seized for the war effort and were converted into the very popular and C-46 and later C-60 Lodestars which proved indispensable during World War II. First edition of this exceedingly scarce manual written to train and educate Navy Balloonists before the U.S. entered World War I after the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company secured a contract to train 20 men in free ballooning in May 1917. This work describes the free balloon how to construct and use various parts of the balloon details the physical properties of gases used for lift the physics behind the gases and atmosphere preparations for flight the proper methods of handling the balloon in the air as well as on the ground as well as advising the balloonist to exercise care in using gasoline to remove oil from balloon fabrics by avoiding the seams because it will cause the seam to deteriorate. The illustrations and photos at the end show a balloon being laid out for inflation inflated setting the sandbags rigging and ascension of the balloon. The Jan. 28 1918 typescript by Lieut. Comm. Teed specifically outlines the technical advantages and uses of employing hydrogen in the free balloons with specific equations and calculations for volume lift and more. Goodyear had established its Aeronautics Department in 1910 to market rubber impregnated fabrics and coatings for airplanes and lighter-than-air craft and began buildings its first balloons in 1912. In 1916 Goodyear bought 720 acres of land southeast of Akron to serve as their flying school and manufacturing site. Around the same time they began building their first airship in March 1917 they were also negotiating for a contract with the government to train balloonists for the Navy. Of particular interest in this work are the presence of the original manuscript “Free Balloon Log Sheets†documenting free flights starting in Winfoot Lake OH and landing in East Lewistown Homeworth Youngstown & Minerva OH; Sagerstown & Hallston PA Columbia Station. Several of the sheets note weather conditions flight altitudes how they landed and manuscript observations taken during the flights. Roth 1885-1950 was a noted sport balloonist before and after World War I up through the 1930s was a balloon instructor during World War I for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. and also was a pilot in the U.S. National Balloon race in 1930. Original editions of this early Goodyear aviation work are quite scarce.
