‎PERBOYRE Jean-Gabriel‎ ‎VIE DU BIENHEUREUX JEAN-GABRIEL PERBOIYRE, Prêtre de la Congrégation de la mission, martyrisé en Chine le 11 septembre 1840‎ ‎Gaume et compagnie, Paris, 1890‎ ‎Un volume petit in-8°, demi-reliure cuir rouge à coins , plats marbrés, dos à 4 nerfs avec 4 caissons ornés et le 5ème consacré au titre. L’ouvrage compte 474 pages dont une table des matières et s’ouvre sur un frontispice (le portrait de Jean-Gabriel PERBOYRE). Jean-Gabriel PERBOYRE (1802-1840) était un prêtre lazariste originaire du Lot parti en CHINE pour accomplir comme tout missionnaire une oeuvres d’évangélisation tout en étant conscient des risques qu’il prenait puisqu’une loi chinoise de 1794 (de l’Empereur KIEN -LOUNG) proscrivait la religion chrétienne et condamnait tous ceux qui en feraient profession à la peine de mort s’ils étaient européens. Il arriva donc en CHINE en 1836, y exerça son sacerdoce pendant environ 3 ans, fut arrêté en septembre 1839 et mis à mort un an plus tard après une année d’interrogatoires et d’affreux supplices. Indépendamment de toute croyance religieuse il faut voir ce livre ce livre comme un document sur l’histoire d’un simple missionnaire d’origine rurale attiré très jeune par l’oeuvre missionnaire, sur la façon dont il vécut clandestinement dans ce pays sous la protection de quelques chrétiens chinois qui risquaient bien évidemment leur vie, eux aussi, et sur la façon dont la justice chinois d’alors procéda après qu’il eût été arrêté. Oui, il faut voir ce livre comme un document, en sachant que, dans la deuxième partie, il sera surtout question de la béatification de ce prêtre. Perckhammers (1895?1965) umfangreiches Werk ist bislang kaum erschlossen. 1914 gelangte er als Matrose schiffbrüchig in den Fernen Osten, sein Schiff wurde versenkt. Mit einem kleinen Rest der Besatzung war er von 1917 bis 1919 in einem chinesischen Lager interniert. In dieser Zeit begann seine fotografische Laufbahn, bis 1928 blieb er in China. Nach seiner Rückkehr eröffnete er am Kurfürstendamm sein "Photo-Art-Studio", belieferte die Presse mit Aufnahmen aus Gesellschaft, Motorsport und zahlreichen Aktbildern und veröffentlichte einige Bildbände. Illustrated original softcover binding in very good condition. 24x17x5,5 cm‎ ‎* Thomas Pereira or Tomás Pereira (1 November 1645 ? 1708), also known as Tomé Pereira, was a Portuguese Jesuit, mathematician and scientist who worked as a missionary in Qing China. Pereira was born in Vila Nova de Famalicão. He arrived in China in 1672 and first stayed in the Portuguese colony of Macau, where he was enrolled in the University College of St. Paul. Pereira was later sent to Beijing to work in the court of the Kangxi Emperor, where he stayed during most of his career. In 1689, the Kangxi Emperor sent Pereira and his colleague Jean-François Gerbillon to interpret at the negotiations between Qing China and the Russian Empire in Nerchinsk, which eventually resulted in the Treaty of Nerchinsk. Between 1688 and 1694, Pereira and Antoine Thomas were unofficial directors of the imperial observatory in Beijing as the actual director was not in China at the time. He was buried in the Jesuits' Zhalan Cemetery in Beijing.
