‎. ed. l saggio di Demel determina e mette a fuoco questo passaggio storicamente importante per la coscienza europea attraverso la ricognizione di una vicenda esemplare: come i cinesi divennero 'gialli'. Dagli inizi del Cinquecento alla fine del Settecento viaggiatori e missionari recatisi in Estremo Oriente relazionano sull'aspetto fisico dei cinesi affermando che essi sono di aspetto e di carnagione molto simili agli europei. Se in Occidente i pregiudizi nei confronti di popoli diversi sono di antica data, le prime formulazioni di vere e proprie teorie della razza risalgono solo alla seconda metà del secolo XVII. Demel ripercorre sinteticamente le posizioni di autori quali Bernier, Buffon, Kant e Linneo, variamente impegnati nello sforzo di creare ciascuno una propria teoria della razza imperniata fra l'altro sul riconoscimento del differente colore della pelle: nella ricostruzione di Demel risulta interessante e significativo il contributo dato dall'Illuminismo al consolidamento del pregiudizio razziale. Dalla convinzione che i cinesi non possano essere del tutto bianchi si passa, durante il secolo XIX, ad attribuire loro il colore giallo. Ma perché il giallo? In quanto intermedio fra il bianco e il marrone, il giallo esprime l'immagine ambivalente della civiltà cinese: per quanto apparisse arretrata nei confronti della coeva civiltà europea, ben difficilmente si poteva negare la sua superiorità rispetto al livello culturale di altri popoli.‎

Although it informed many aspects of Greek society, metis was all but absent from the language of Greek philosophy. Invoking indigenous Chinese debates, Lisa Raphals here examines the role and significance of metic intelligence in classical Chinese philosophy, literature, history, and military strategy.Raphals first examines the range of meanings of the Chinese word zhi. As with the Greek metis, the uses of zhi include "wisdom," "knowledge," "intelligence," "skill," "cleverness," and "cunning." Drawing on parallels between the two traditions, she argues that, in China as in Greece, metic intelligence tacitly informed many aspects of cultural and social life. In China, these included views of the nature of knowledge and language, standards of personal and social morality, and theories of military strategy and statecraft. After surveying representative texts from the Warring States period, Raphals considers the function of metic intelligence as the dominant quality of central characters in two novels from the Ming dynasty, the Romance of Three Kingdoms and Journey to the West. A 1695 version by Zhang Zhupo became the most widely read and it is this text in particular on which Ding focuses.
