At the beginning of the third year of war against the Ottoman army in the Austro-Russian-Turkish War of 1735-39: a mandate to the Upper Austrian Estates and their subservients regarding an extraordinary tax to be raised for the support the Imperial army. "We [the Emperor] should have wished nothing better, from the time that we were obliged to take arms against the hereditary enemy, than to re-establish the peace, and effect this either through the force of weapons or by kind acts; however, as during the time of our recent campaign our so numerous and well-equipped armies have much suffered from illnesses, long and tiring marches, and other hardships which must needs accompany a war, and thus have been hindered in achieving the desired further successes, and peace negotiations are yet distant, though We do not desist in pursuing all means conducive to achieving such an end, all that is now necessary is to replenish our forces, and convey here the necessary tools, in other words, to make our forces capable of effectively preventing all enemy action, and to bring peace and safety to our kingdom and dominions; all of which, as everybody will readily acknowledge, cannot be done without great expenditure, for which our treasury and the ordinary grants from the estates are not sufficient, We have found Ourselves compelled, even if against our own wishes, to apply a general contribution, or Turk tax [...]". - Traces of folds with slight tears and paper defects; captioned on reverse by a contemporary hand.

Half grey-brown cloth (ca. 1900?). With the publisher’s lavender printed paper wrappers bound in, repeating the arms of the title-page. A remarkable bibliophile edition (limited to fifty copies) of financial accounts and other documents concerning hunting and falconry from the archives of King Charles VIII of France in the years 1485 to 1486. These documents are essential primary sources for the history of hunting and falconry, giving detailed and very specific data to throw light on falconry ca. 1485/86. The text was prepared in conjunction with a publication about Margaret of Austria (1480-1530), Duchess of Savoy, and Quinsonas (1818-1901) wrote a brief introductory chapter to the present book, “Documents pour servir a l’histoire de Marguerite d’Autriche”. The daughter the future Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I, she was betrothed to Charles VIII in 1483 and came to the French court to be educated as the future Queen of France. He broke off the engagement to marry her stepmother for political reasons in 1491. So at the time of the book’s documents about Charles VIII she was still betrothed to him and living at the French court. After he broke off their engagement she married twice, the second time in 1501 to Philibert II, Duke of Savoy who died of pneumonia that he caught during a hunt in 1504. The chromolithographs show details from two stained-glass portraits of her, one of her husband Philibert and a view of her “tower” in his chateau in Pont d’Ain. The etchings show Pont d’Ain and Louis XIII’s chateau at Poncin. After Margaret’s brother King Philip I of Spain died in 1506, she became governor of the Low Countries for most of 1507-30. Although the title-page names no compiler and the imprint names only the printer, Quinsonas’s arms appear on the title-page and front wrapper. He was clearly the motive force behind the publication, using the services of the printer Louis Perrin, who pioneered historically allusive book design. - With a presentation inscription from the compiler Comte de Quinsonas to Mr [Louis] de Mas-Latrie (1815-97), historian and palaeographer, on the front wrapper. With an 1890 (?) bookseller’s ticket, the bookplate of Paul Couturier de Royas (1853-1934), and a modern armorial bookplate of the Verne d’Orcet family, whose great library on the subject of hunting was begun ca. 1900. With offsetting of the chromolithographs (in spite of the tissue guards bound in to prevent it), the ribbon marker has left a browned shadow in the gutter margin between 2 pages and the margins of the wrappers have faded to grey-brown, but otherwise in very good condition. A bibliophile edition of documents concerning King Charles VIII’s hunting and falconry in the years 1485-86. Schwerdt 119. Thiébaud 763. For the type cf. Exceedingly rare, large map of the Arabian Peninsula, based on surveys conducted under General F. R. Chesney (1789-1872), the explorer of the Euphrates and founder of the overland route to India. Drawn by W. H. F. Plate. This is a second, improved edition of a map that had previously appeared in 1847 under the simple title "Arabia" (kept at the British Library, referenced as IOR/X/3205 within the Qatar Digital Library). "Mesopotamia and its rivers are laid down from Surveys made during the Euphrates Expedition. The Red Sea, the Persian Gulf and the Southern Coast of Arabia are from those made by the Officers or the Indian Navy. The interior of the peninsula is from various sources, particularly materials furnished for the accompanying work by Aloys Sprenger M.D. and from documents obtained by Dr. Plate" (note). Contemporary full blue cloth with blindstamped covers and gilt spine titles. Wants the boxed 14 maps. First edition. Chesney (1789-1872), the explorer of the Euphrates and founder of the overland route to India, intended the work to be complete in four volumes, but half the manuscript was lost and only these two volumes were published. The book describes the exploration trip through the Euphrates and Tiber valleys, to the Arabian Gulf, in search of a shorter route to India. "He explored the Euphrates twice, at first alone, on a raft, in secret and at great risk (he frequently came under fire from hostile Arabs) and later by steamer, although the second attempt was no less fraught with difficulty than the first (the 'Tigris' was wrecked and there were numerous physical obstacles to overcome). Chesney was clearly an explorer of the first order and his courage and perseverance were matched only by his attention to detail and thoroughness in the surveys he produced" (Atabey). - Lacking four leaves in the first volume and (as often) the 14 slip-cased maps. Provenance: removed from the library of Hawkesyard Priory, Staffordshire (dispersed in 2008) with their stamps. Latterly in the collection of Roberto Gulbenkian (1923-2009). Folio (305 x 190 mm). 2 parts in 1 volume. (4), 31, (1), 64 pp. With 12 (instead of 16) plates containing 24 copper engravings. Modern boards. Fascinating, little-received chronographical study focusing on the history of the Eastern Mediterranean and Asia Minor, then under Ottoman rule. The anonymous late 17th-century German author hides behind the name of "Philo Chronographus" and is evidently identical with the "Philo Cosmographus" who produced the similarly themed geographical work, "Trinum Marinum", which is announced on the title page and was often issued together with this, though produced by a different publisher and catalogued separately. The first part of the work contains a general introduction which relates the 24 hours of the day to the time from Creation to the year 1800 (which is conceived of as the end of the world, leaving another mere 107 years of history to come!). The second part features a chronicle of the "Rule of the Ottoman Porte", from Sultan Osman to Suleyman II. - Numerous pages of plates (each page containing two copper engravings) depict costumes, animals and plants, maps and views of towns (Sultan Osman, the Ottoman Residence and a view of Constantinople, dolphins and cranes, Turkish ladies in their various garments, a cypress and a mastix tree, etc.). - The number of plates, and indeed even the arrangement of engravings on a single page, varies from copy to copy, but this wants 4 plates as compared to the table of plates. Folio (215 x 328 mm). (4), 104 pp. With engraved frontispiece and 51 leaves of plates (8 double-page-sized or folded). Near-contemporary red half morocco with gilt rules and marbled covers, spine richly gilt (loss of label). Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Rare description of the Holy City of Jerusalem and of the whole of Palestine; a reissue (with changed title) of the edition published by Josef Baumeister in Vienna in 1787. Previous editions had appeared in Venice in 1728, then in 1749 and 1781, while the 1787 edition boasted "a new text and different iconography" (Staikos). This latter edition is here reproduced largely unchanged save for bringing the name of the Patriarch of Jerusalem up to date (from Abraham to Anthimus), as well as that of the editor, Apostolas Boras, on the title page. "The engraving of the Patriarch on his throne is unchanged except for the name; it is signed (in Greek): 'engraved by Schindelmayer in Vienna' [...] A large-sized, impressive book" (Staikos). "A portrait of the Patriarch [Anthimus] forms the frontispiece; also, there is an illustration of the Palace of David, and a plan of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, though the view of its cross-section is quite haphazard [...] The author expands on Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Hebron, and the sacred sites of Galilee. The text is apparently more or less that of the Venice 1728 edition; apart from that, it is generously interspersed with highly appealing illustrations in the true taste of modern Greece" (cf. Tobler 135). The Viennese publisher and printer Franz Anton Schrämbl, whose company was continued by his widow Johanna after his death in 1804, specialised in reprints (often of large sets), maps, and books in Greek. Their production was one of the strongest in Vienna (cf. Frank/Frimmel, Buchwesen in Wien, p. 175f.). - Extremeties bumped; spine-ends chipped. Still a beautiful volume from the library of King George III of the United Kingdom (1738-1820) with his royal cypher on the spine. Staikos no. 28 (note p. 94). OCLC 41651327. Cf. Röhricht 1362, 1515. With 187 engraved plates (many folding) and 9 engravings in the text (showing maps, plans, views, costumes, flora, fauna, scenes, portraits etc., including 2 bound as frontispieces), as well as numerous woodcuts in the text (showing arms, seals, devices, coastal views, details, machinery etc.). Uniform full calf with red labels to spine (gilding oxydized). Third and best edition of this important and profusely illustrated collection of travel reports, compiled by the brothers Awnsham and John Churchill, based on Hakluyt and Purchas. It includes the accounts of Martin Baumgarten (Egypt, Arabia, Palestine, Syria), Thomas Roe, Philipp Balde and Johan Nieuhoff (East Indies, including a detailed account of the north-eastern coast of Arabia, with a description of pearl fishing in Bahrain and mentioning Julfar, Qatar, Sir Bani Yas, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras al-Khaimah, Amalgavine, and other places of interest along the coastline), J. Gemelli Careri (Turkey, Persia, India), Nicholas Rolamb (Constantinople), John Barbot (West Africa, with a chapter on "Mahomet and his Alcoran"), as well as of Yemen and various journeys to China, Korea, Greenland, Iceland, Africa, North and South America (including Columbus). - "This is a very valuable collection, both for its range of coverage and for the fact that it gives the original accounts [...] The third edition is considered to be best because of its greater inclusiveness and its copious index" (Hill). Two further volumes were issued separately in 1745, republished in 1752. - The count of the illustrations is notoriously complicated: the "List of the Copper Plates" counts 305 illustrations and maps, of which as many as four are placed on a single plate, and some are placed within the text. Compared to this list, the present set lacks 52 illustrations, or ca. 20 plates, whereas the first volume contains 5 additional plates not called for in the List. Three of the maps (Africa, Asia, America) which the List announces for the first volume are in fact bound in volumes IV-VI. The introduction, a "History of Navigation from its Original to this time", is likely one of the final works of the philosopher John Locke, whose publisher and financial manager Awnsham Churchill had been (while the attribution has been called into question, the text was included in Locke's Complete Works). - Provenance: Byrdie McNeill, Mt. First edition. - The Lebanese Maronite Churi trained at the Congregation of Propaganda in Rome from 1842 to 1849. He later left Rome and made his way to London, where he gave lessons in Arabic, Latin, Italian, and Hebrew. Captain W. Peel was amongst his pupils and persuaded him to accompany him on a tour of the Middle East between October 1850 and February 1851. The present work is an account of a second journey the pair undertook to Egypt and the Sudan between August 1851 and February 1852. - Some wear to spine and boards. Mild occasional foxing, otherwise in very good condition. Nice original, unblemished yellow endpapers. Rare. Ibrahim-Hilmy I, 135 (erroneously s. v. "Chusi"). OCLC 4709982. Not in Gay.
