The Bride of Lammermoor is a historical novel by Sir Walter Scott, published in 1819, one of the Waverley novels. The novel is set in the Lammermuir Hills of south-east Scotland, shortly before the Act of Union of 1707 (in the first edition), or shortly after the Act (in the 'Magnum' edition of 1830). It tells of a tragic love affair between young Lucy Ashton and her family's enemy Edgar Ravenswood. Scott indicated the plot was based on an actual incident. The Bride of Lammermoor and A Legend of Montrose were published together anonymously as the third of Scott's Tales of My Landlord series. The story is the basis for Donizetti's 1835 opera Lucia di Lammermoor. Salvadore Cammarano wrote the Italian-language libretto loosely based upon Sir Walter Scott's 1819 historical novel The Bride of Lammermoor by Gaetano Donizetti, (1797-1848). 54 years after the first edition in 1819 was published, and 38 years after the composition of Donizetti's opera, the Ottoman Turkish edition was published firstly in 1873, translated by Hamid. Zartanyan Publishing House was founded in the late 19th century in the Ottoman Istanbul, in Beyoglu district, around Suultanhamami by Zartan Efendi. Kevork Zartanian, (?-1888), was an Armenian publisher who founded his publishing house named Zartanian Publishing House in 1870. In the 18 years that passed from the publication of this book to his death, he has published books in many fields. Since he was also a music publisher (most likely), he published Sir Walter Scott's "The Bride of Lammermoor" because it was transferred to an opera by Donizetti Pasha in the early 19th century. According to Özege, Scott's translations into the Turkish language were only three. Other titles are 'Miyarü'l-makal' (1873) and 'Salahaddin-i Eyyubî ve Arslan Yürekli Risar' (1912). The last one was published in Mihran Publishing House was one of the early publishing houses in the Ottoman Empire which was one of the Armenian publishing houses. Özege 13789.; TBTK 8991. La vicenda degli uscocchi si colloca all'interno delle grandi lotte per il potere tra l'Impero ottomano, la Repubblica di Venezia e l'Impero degli Asburgo nel delicatissimo scacchiere adriatico tra il XVI e il XVII secolo, ma - a tutt'oggi - la documentazione storica non è stata studiata a sufficienza, e resta un mistero il loro stesso nome, che persino vocabolari ed enciclopedie descrivono in maniera discordante e imprecisa. Il termine, dal serbo/croato uskok, "fuggiasco", ha poi assunto negli anni molti altri significati: "profughi", "migranti", "predatori", "assalitori", "disertori", "ribelli", "guerrieri", "pirati". L'epoca degli uscocchi, che in origine svolgevano un'utile funzione militare come primo baluardo cristiano contro l'avanzata turca, è durata circa ottant'anni: da cento - quanti erano inizialmente nel 1537, quando la roccaforte di Klis venne conquistata dai turchi - diventarono duemila alla fine della loro storia, conclusasi con la "guerra di Gradisca" o "guerra degli uscocchi" nel 1617. I cronisti pagati dai tre stati che si spartivano l'Adriatico li descrivono, a seconda delle necessità e degli obblighi verso i committenti, a volte come profughi spinti dall'avidità per il danaro e la vendetta, altre come combattenti per la giustizia e la libertà.

Cuatro días antes de morirse, Cervantes mismo lo dice: no son los tiempos unos , y que vendrá un tiempo en el que la gente, anudando los rotos hilos sueltos de sus historias, verá lo que quiso decir y, más aún, lo que convenía decir. Este libro de Emilio Sola historiador con trabajos fundamentales sobre asuntos fronterizos y de información en la época de Cervantes, tanto en el Mediterráneo como en Extremo Oriente es una invitación precisamente a esa interpretación más libre de las obras de Cervantes, a una lectura libertaria o liberadora que en su tiempo histórico no son los tiempos unos era inviable. Para horror del sistema, de los casticistas, de los bienpensantes y políticamente correctos, sobrevuela la sospecha de un Cervantes antisistema, imposible cortesano, zahiriente del cambio injusto y trato con maraña (la corrupción económica más elemental), un Cervantes aconfesional y hasta feminista del que no se habla en la pompa de los centenarios, y cuyomensaje principal se esforzó en construir a lo largo de su vida de manera consciente. Por ello, Cervantes, el libertario cuerdo o lúcido, tiene que inventarse a don Quijote, el libertario loco, para poder decir lo que quería decir, pura búsqueda de libertad de expresión para alcanzar libertad en esta vida . Lecturas de Cervantes innumerables y siempre nuevas, renovables incluso a medida que cambien los tiempos, fundamentales para entender por ejemplo a Cervantes cuando dice que no vale para cortesano porque no sabe lisonjear, y cuyas quejas sobre la justicia son radicales, sin fisura, claramente antisistémicas, tal cual aparece en el discurso primero de la Edad de Oro, por boca de Quijote; o el Cervantes que en un análisis maestro de la modernidad que se avecinaba, compara la empresa económica moderna con la galeota corsaria, y lamenta que el nuevo dios de los nuevos tiempos sea el interese , el dinero, de manera que el cambio injusto y trato con maraña sea la nueva ley de esos nuevos tiempos bárbaros; o el Cervantes feminista que en una sociedad patriarcal y macha hace decir a Marcela que ella nació libre y que pasa de que su enamorado no correspondido, Crisóstomo, se haya suicidado, porque era un acosador; o el Cervantes que, en una sociedad confesional fundamentalista como era la monarquía católica, hace despedirse a un moro y a un cristiano en una pieza teatral así: Tu Cristo vaya contigo , dice el moro Ali; Tu Mahoma, Ali, te guarde , dice el cristiano; formulación sin parangón en la literatura europea de entonces y casi de hoy, tal como van las cosas. Ese es el Cervantes que no parece que las élites culturales y los especialistas tengan ningún interés en glosar para que todos lo entiendan. El que no puede digerir una sociedad formal que en el fondo no entra de lleno en él porque, como en vida le sucedió, lo desprecia y oculta, lo difumina o ningunea, y sólo es capaz de reírle gracias al loco que dice tonterías, y que inventó por pura necesidad de libertad de expresión, en un artilugio literario que crea la novela moderna. Ese es, sin duda, el Cervantes personaje histórico que encandila a los anarquistas, a los libertarios, y por ello son radicalmente cervantistas, más que quijotistas, pues enamorados del Quijote, focalizan su interés en ese hombre que está detrás de la obra literaria misma, que le da vida, que la hace posible. Ese Don Quijote de Alcalá de Henares, como sintetiza, puro emblema, José María Pujol, en el título de un libro que publicó en 1947 y que firma sencillamente PUYOL; un exiliado libertario que llegó a Argelia en el barco. en espanol.

Sólo la mano maestra de Cervantes es capaz de guiar al historiador por aquel mundo, exótico y cercano al mismo tiempo, actualísimo, salvando los escollos de la 'leyenda negra' que los medios oficiales cristianos tejieron sobre la Berbería.

The most popular Armenian classical composer of his time, Komitas (1869 1935) is still on every concert program of classical Armenian music. Komitas s creative work was cut short by the Armenian Genocide of 1915 16. Some stains on margins spine slightly loosened with minor marginal chippings on the pages. An untrimmed and unopened copy in good condition. First and only Greek edition of this rare medical book printed in Paris on physiology by Mavrogenis. He was one of the most influential professors of medicine at the Constantinople Medical School where he taught internal medicine. In this book Mavrogenis clearly presents the state of the art in physiology at the time distinguishes between physiology and psychology in terms of their methodologies and offers an accurate description of the contemporary views on the "Brain-Mind Problem" George Anogianakis Reflections of Western Thinking on Nineteenth Century Ottoman Thought: A Critique of the 'Hard-Problem' by Spyridon Mavrogenis a Nineteenth Century Physiologist. Spyridon Mavrogenis a prominent Phanariot Greek doctor played a key role in the medical field of the Ottoman Empire during the 19th century. He served as the personal physician to Sultan Abdul Hamid II. His lineage traced back to the Mavrogenis family who were of Venetian heritage. Mavrogenis's father passed away when he was young prompting him to live with his uncle Ioannis Mavrogenis in Vienna where his uncle served as the chargé d'affaires for the Ottoman mission. Mavrogenis initially studied at the Chalcis Commercial School and later attended medical studies in Vienna from 1835 to 1843. After completing his studies he worked as an auxiliary doctor in a city-owned hospital in Vienna. Returning to Constantinople in 1845 Mavrogenis served as a doctor at the Artillery Hospital and in 1848 became a professor at the Imperial Medical School. He initially taught hygiene and later pathology advocating for the use of French as the medium of instruction. In addition to his professional achievements Mavrogenis was involved in the cultural sphere hosting meetings of the Greek Literary Society at his home starting in 1861. OCLC locates only two copies 261976425 at Stanford University Lane Medical Library and Utrecht University Library both with 317 pages. First and only Greek edition of this rare medical book printed in Paris, on physiology by Mavrogenis who was one of the most influential professors of medicine at the Constantinople Medical School where he taught the course in internal medicine. In this book, he clearly presents the state of the art in Physiology at the time, makes a clear distinction between Physiology and Psychology in terms of their methodologies, and accurately describes the then-current state of the "Brain - Mind Problem". Mavrogenis was a Phanariot Greek doctor who was the physician of Abdul Hamid II, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. A member of the Mavrogenis family, his great-grandfather was Petros Mavrogenis. Theodore Blancard stated that the Mavrogenises or the Morozonis was of Venetian heritage. His father died when he was young, so he lived with his uncle, Ioannis Mavrogenis, who was living in Vienna as the chargé d'affairs of the local Ottoman mission. He had studied at the Chalcis Commercial School prior to living with his uncle and at a medical studies program in Vienna from 1835-1843. He initially remained in that city, working in a city-owned hospital as an auxiliary doctor. He came back to Constantinople in 1845. Whilst back in Turkey, he became a doctor in the Artillery Hospital, and then, beginning in 1848, a professor at the Imperial Medical School. He initially taught hygiene, and later pathology. There he advocated for French as a medium of instruction. He held meetings of the Greek Literary Society, created in 1861, at his house. OCLC locates only two copies (261976425) in Stanford University Lane Medical Library and Utrecht University Library, but with the copies "317 pages".
